Mumbai, January 05: With Bajaj announcing it is pulling out of the scooter space to focus on motorcycles, TVS Motors is perhaps the first to seize the opportunity headlong with its hybrid three-wheeler that runs on petrol, CNG and an electric battery.

The vehicle, incidentally, is already proving to be a huge hit as it ferries visitors around the sprawling Pragati Maidan complex where Auto Expo 2010 is being held.

American varsities students visit AMU

Bhopal, January 05: (Pervez Bari) Two dozen students of different Universities of the United States of America visited the Aligarh Muslim University, (AMU), Aligarh and met the Vice Chancellor Prof. P. K. Abdul Azis at his residence.

According to Dr. Rahat Abrar, AMU’s Public Relations Officer, the American students visited the heritage buildings of the University and paid tribute to the founder Sir Syed Ahmad Khan. The visiting team also interacted with the students and staff of the Department of Urdu and English at Arts Faculty lounge.

Fog disrupts train schedule in Delhi

New Delhi, January 05: Hundreds of passengers were stranded in chilly weather at New Delhi Railway Station Tuesday as several trains were delayed for hours following fog in various parts of noth India.

As many as 25 trains to Delhi were delayed due to dense fog, spokesperson of Northern Railways Anant Swarup said.

‘We have cancelled six trains and have rescheduled three due to inclement weather in northern India,’ he said.

The trains rescheduled are Bhopal Shatabdi, Kashi Vishwanath Express and Neelanchal Express.

Private hospital told to pay patient Rs.18 lakh compensation

Chandigarh, January 05: A consumer forum has ordered a private hospital here to pay a compensation of nearly Rs.18 lakh to a former patient for deficiency in services, an official said Tuesday.

The district consumer disputes redressal forum has directed Inscol hospital, located in Sector 34, to pay the compensation money to Inderjit Arora, a resident of Manimajra town near here.

Nepal ban on sand, stone export to hit India

Kathmandu, January 05: Nepal’s decision to ban the export of sand, boulders and crushed stone to prevent environmental degradation is going to hit hard India’s booming construction industry, especially in the Terai plains close to the Nepal border.

A parliamentary panel on natural resources Monday directed the coalition government to immediately stop the export of sand and stone to India after growing concern that the depletion was making the region environmentally fragile.

The sand and stone were primarily exported from Nepal’s Terai plains and the Chure-Bhawar region.

Delhi computer professionals falling prey to weak backs, shoulders

New Delhi, January 05: An increasing number of computer professionals in and around the national capital have become victims of weak backs and shoulders, a problem that doctors believe has multiplied recently.

“Gurgaon is an IT hub and the problem is definitely severe here. I have seen a nearly 10 fold increase in the number of shoulder and back ache patients. They are falling flat on weak shoulders,” said I.P.S. Oberoi, a senior orthopaedics doctor at the Artemis Health Institute in Gurgaon.

Court allows CBI to conduct narco tests on Aarushi’s parents

Ghaziabad, January 05: A local court Tuesday allowed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to conduct narco tests on Rajesh and Nupur Talwar, parents of teenager Aarushi Talwar who was found murdered in her house in 2008, after it found “no reason for not granting the permission”.

“After looking at CBI’s plea, we do not see any reason for not granting the permission to conduct the narco tests on Rajesh and Nupur Talwar,” the court order reads.

Salman encourages kids to be ‘Veer’

Mumbai, January 05: Bollywood star Salman Khan is promoting his forthcoming film “Veer” in a new way – he is meeting children and encouraging them to be confident and brave.

Salman’s love for kids was seen on Sunday at Jamnabai School where 19 schools had participated in an event called Cascade.

“Salman had gone to boost confidence of the kids and told them that there is a ‘veer’ in you which gives you the confidence to come up on the stage and talk. Salman also distributed music CDs and danced with the kids. He gave autograph to each and every kid before leaving,” said a source.

Obesity as injurious to health as smoking

Washington, January 05: Obesity is no less injurious to health than smoking, says a recent study.

Researchers from Columbia University and The City College of New York calculate that the Quality-Adjusted Life Years (QALYs) lost due to obesity is now equal to, if not greater than, those lost due to smoking, both modifiable risk factors.

QALYs use preference-based measurements of Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQOL) which allow a person to state a relative preference for a given health outcome.

Fake currency racket busted in Mizoram, three arrested

Aizawl, January 05: Security forces in Mizoram have busted a fake currency racket and arrested three people, including a woman, police said here Tuesday.

Mizoram police and troopers of the Border Security Force in a joint operation uncovered the racket at Vairengte near the Assam-Mizoram border on Saturday, said Aizawl district police chief Lalbiakthanga Khiangte.

The security forces seized fake Indian currency with a face value of Rs.164,000 along with a laptop, computers, printer, scanner, silk screen developer, different coloured solutions, inks, and reams of court stamp paper.

Pakistan intruder shot by BSF at border

Amritsar, January 05: The Border Security Force has foiled the attempt made by Pakistani intruder, who was trying to cross into the Indian Territory, was shot dead by the Jawans at Rajatal Post in Attari sector in Amritsar district last night.

Initially the Jawans tried him to stop, but he avoided and made effort to flee, which forced officials to shot him dead. The officials have recovered Rs 20 lakh fake currency and five and half kg heroin worth more than Rs 27 crore from the spot.

Fardeen Khan becomes groom again to promote his film

Mumbai, January 05: Bollywood actor Fardeen Khan, who has been married for over four years, dressed up as a groom again and led a marriage procession, but this time to promote his upcoming film “Dulha Mil Gaya”.

The actor got on a chariot and came to a shopping mall here Sunday along with other cast members including Johnny Lever, Suchitra Pillai, Tara Sharma and debutant Mohit Chadda. The procession started from Lokhandwala and continued to the mall located in Oshiwara.

The procession was welcomed with much fanfare and Fardeen met his on-screen bride Ishitta Sharrma.

JAC leaders arrested for detaining trains

Vijayawada, January 05: The Railway police along with local police today arrested the leaders of Joint Action Committee (JAC) for detaining three Express trains at Vijayawada Railway Station for more than one hour.

The JAC comprising students and political leaders of 13 districts of Andhra and Rayalaseema Regions had given a call for ”Rail Roko” on Saturday last to exert pressure on the Centre for United Andhra Pradesh, coinciding with the eight-party meeting convened by Union Home Minister P Chidamabaram on the Telangana issue in New Delhi today.

She has been training for the past one year. Though most people take to kick boxing for self defence, Sonal practises it as part of her daily fitness regime and trains every day for an hour.

Cold wave abates in Orissa

Bhubaneswar, January 05: The cold wave abated slightly in Orissa Tuesday with the mercury rising across the state, an official said.

The minimum temperature rose to seven degrees Celsius in Phulbani town of Kandhamal district after recording the season’s lowest of four degrees Sunday. Cold wave conditions had prevailed in the state for much of last week.

“The rise in minimum temperature is mainly due to increase in moisture content in the atmosphere,” Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre director S.C. Sahu told IANS.

British ruling party may face bankruptcy

London, January 05: The funding crisis that British Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s party faces could threaten its campaign in the upcoming elections, a new report says.

David Blunkett, the former Home Secretary from the Labor party, said the party was going into the election at a greater financial disadvantage than any time since 1983, when the Labor party suffered a landslide defeat.

“We are trying to be careful so we don’t end up bankrupt after the election if this all goes pear-shaped,” Blunkett told The Times newspaper.

Blasts leave 15 civilians wounded in Mosul

Mosul, January 05: At least fifteen people have obtained injuries in two separate bombing attacks across Iraq’s third largest city, Mosul.

In an incident on Monday, five civilians were wounded as a thermal bomb exploded in close proximity to a police patrol vehicle on al-Nujaifi Street in the center of the conflict-plagued city.

“No patrolmen were wounded in the blast,” a security source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency on condition of anonymity.

Clinton: Yemen threatens region, world

Washington, January 05: US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton says insecurity in Yemen is a regional and global threat, as the White House prepares the ground for a new war in the region.

“The instability in Yemen is a threat to regional stability and even global stability,” Clinton told reporters following talks with Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassem bin Jabr al-Thani on Monday.

“And certainly, we know that this is a difficult set of challenges, but they have to be addressed,” she added.
