Mauritius keen to learn voting machine use from India

New Delhi, January 29: Mauritius is keen to introduce electronic voting machines to speed up the counting process, says its top election official.

‘The counting process is slow. We want to learn from India’s experience in using electronic voting machines (EVMs),’ Electoral Commissioner of Mauritius M.I. Abdool Rahman told here.

In the capital for the diamond jubilee celebrations of Election Commission of India (ECI), Rahman said Thursday that his country still used ballot papers in elections.

Zarine Khan replaces Katrina Kaif

NTR to marry Pranita in May 2010

Mumbai, January 29: Actor Junior NTR will marry Narne Lakshmi Pranita, daughter of Narne Srinivasa Rao and Narne Mallika.

Mallika is the niece of Telugu Desam president, Nara Chandrababu Naidu. The news is confirmed by Naidu and other family members from NTR’s side. A Telugu Desam leader maintained that the engagement, a low-key ceremony, took place three days ago.

The marriage ceremony will be held in May. The process of match making has been on for four months. Narne Srinivasa Rao is the chairman said.

Mallika Sherawat’s bikini shoot irks her brother

Mumbai, January 29: Mallika Sherawat’s older brother, Vikram Lamba, got a little protective of his younger sister on the sets of Hissss. He blasted the crew for making Mallika wear a skin-coloured, flimsy bikini.

The shot was being done on a dark, cold night. Director Jennifer Lynch’s plan was to take Mallika’s close-ups and full body shots of a naked body double. Mallika had to lean on a branch.

S Korea says inter-Korean summit possible despite shelling

Seoul, January 29: South Korea’s President Lee Myung-Bak has expressed willingness to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong-Il, despite this week’s shelling by the communist state which raised tensions on the peninsula.

“I’m always ready to meet with Chairman Kim Jong-Il,” Lee said in an interview yesterday in Davos, where he attended an economic forum.

His office released a transcript today.

“However, if we meet, we have to engage in fruitful dialogue and hold enough discussions on the North Korean nuclear issue,” Lee said.

US formally commits to Copenhagen Accord

Washington, January 29: The United States has formally affiliated with the Copenhagen Accord and pledged to cut its carbon emissions ‘in the range of 17 percent’ from 2005 levels, conditional on Congressional action on climate legislation.

In a letter to the UN Framework Conventional of Climate Change Secretariat Thursday, chief US negotiator Todd Stern said the ‘pathway’ in that pending legislation would cut US emissions 30 percent by 2025, 42 percent by 2030, and 83 percent by 2050.

EU commissioner slams airport body scanners

Brussels, January 29: The nominee to become the EU’s top justice official slammed on Thursday the quick introduction of body scanners at airports, saying the devices could invade travellers’ privacy.

“I am convinced that body scanners have a considerable privacy-invasive potential. Their usefulness is still to be proven,” said Viviane Reding, who is currently EU telecoms commissioner but in line to take over the justice post.

Hacker breaks into 49 House sites, insults Obama

Washington, January 29: A hacker broke into 49 House Web sites of both political parties overnight to post a crude attack on President Barack Obama.

Spokesman Jeff Ventura in the chief administrative office said on Thursday the sites that were hit were managed by a third-party vendor. In contrast, most lawmakers’ Web sites are managed by House technicians.

Ventura says the vendor was performing an update and for a brief moment let its guard down. That was long enough to allow the hacker to penetrate the sites.

Mullah Omar not interested in peace talks: Hillary

Washington, January 29: US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Thursday said Taliban leader Mullah Omar is not interested in peace talks or the reconciliation efforts of Afghan President Hamid Karzai.

“I do not expect Mullah Omar and those people to be at all interested in this. In fact, they’ve made it very clear that they’re not,” Hillary told CNN.

“I think there are many members of the Taliban who will see this chance to re-enter society under these very stringent conditions to be attractive enough to test,” she said.

Govt mulls introduction of grading at Class-XII level

New Delhi, January 29: After Class-X, the government is contemplating introducing a grading system at Class-XII in CBSE stream.

HRD Minister Kapil Sibal on said the idea has already been mooted and a committee will examine how grading could be introduced at Class-XII.

“This is in thinking process. No decision has been taken. After the committee gives it report, it will go the Central Advisory Board for Education and Council of Boards of School Education in India (CoBSE),” he told reporters on the sidelines of a conference on Sarva Siksha Abhiyan and other education programmes.

Bangalore, January 29: India has developed a new generation multi-sensor, multi-weapon defence system against enemy targets on board naval ships.

The state-of-the-art “Gun Fire Control System” (GFCS) developed by Bharat Electronics Limited will be installed on board the P-28 class of ships.

“The GFCS is a quick reaction, multi-sensor, multi-weapon, short/medium/long range defence system against air, surface or shore targets on board naval ships”, a senior official of the Bangalore-based Navratna defence PSU told a news agency.

Russian rape case: Goa women’s panel to seek details

Panaji, January 29: The Goa State Commission for Women (GSCW) will seek details of the Russian minor rape case from the Goa police, GSCW chairperson Ezilda Sapeco said.

“I would be calling for the details of police investigations into the minor’s rape on Republic Day (Jan 26) at Arambol beach,” Sapeco told a news agency.

“My first task will be to call for the details of the rape case from the police as soon as possible.”

Two Army soldiers killed in Jammu and Kashmir

Jammu, January 29: Two Indian Army soldiers were killed early on Friday in an ambush by terrorists in Tandar village in Kishtwar district of Jammu and Kashmir, an official here said.

The militants attacked an Army patrol that was on its way to a suspected militant hideout in Tandar in the Dachhan area, about 240 km northeast of Jammu, the official said requesting anonymity.

The Army have sent reinforcements and launched massive search operations in the forested area, where they were attacked.

The identity of the soldiers was not immediately known.

Sensex falls by 182 points ahead of RBI policy review

Mumbai, January 29: The Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark Sensex opened lower by 182 points on Friday on heavy selling by funds ahead of the Reserve Bank’s monetary policy review amid weakening global trend.

The 30-share index dropped by 182.03 points to 16,124.84 points in the first five minutes of trading. The BSE barometer had closed up by 17 points on Thursday.

The National Stock Exchange index Nifty fell by 53.60 points to 4,813.65 points.

Biden: US to up investment in nuclear arsenal

Washington, January 29: US Vice President Joe Biden says that Washington will increase investment in its nuclear arsenal and infrastructure in the country’s new budget.

In an opinion piece appeared in The Wall Street Journal’s website on Thursday, Biden said that the administration will propose USD 7 billion to maintain US nuclear weapons stockpile, which would be USD 600 million more than Congress approved last year.

Govt approves 14 FDI proposals worth Rs 732 cr

New Delhi, January 29: The Government today cleared 14 FDI proposals, including a Rs 273-crore application from Asset Reconstruction Company, which could together bring in foreign investment worth Rs 732.5 crore.

Asset Reconstruction Company is expected to get Rs 272.86 crore worth FDI resulting in foreign holding from the present 14.66 per cent to 16.01 per cent.
