S V Prasad assumes charge of AP chief secretary

Hyderabad, December 31: Senior IAS officer S V Prasad today assumed the charge of Chief Secretary of Andhra Pradesh. Prasad, an officer of the 1975 batch, succeeds P Ramakanth Reddy, who retired from service today after the completion of a three-month extension.

A formal order to this effect was issued this afternoon. An amiable officer, Prasad previously served as Principal Secretary to Chief Ministers N Janardhana Reddy, Kotla Vijaya Bhaskara Reddy and N Chandrababu Naidu.

Police offer protection to city hotels, resorts

Hyderabad, December 31: The State police today offered to provide protection for resorts and hotels to organise New Year parties across Telangana region on December 31 night, in the wake of Joint Action Committee of students appealing to public not to celebrate New Year eve.

Additional Director General of Police (law and order) AK Khan stated that the police will neither encourage nor discourage any hotel or resort to organise a new party but will provide required security upon prior request as part of their duty.

Chidambaram ‘very unhappy’ with handling of Ruchika case

New Delhi, December 31: Home Minister P. Chidambaram Thursday said he was “very unhappy” with the way that the Ruchika Girhotra molestation case had been handled over the last 19 years.

“I am unhappy with the way charges have been framed, the trial has been conducted and the accused (Rathore) punished (in the Ruchika case). I am very unhappy,” Chidambaram told reporters while presenting his ministry’s monthly progress report.

Refusing to comment on the legalities, the home minister said: “I will look into what the central government can do in this case.”

Malaysian court rules Catholic paper can use ‘Allah’

Kuala Lumpur, December 31: A Malaysian court ruled on Thursday that a Catholic newspaper can use “Allah” to describe God in a surprise judgment that could allay worries about the erosion of minority rights in the majority Muslim country.

The High Court said it was the constitutional right for the Catholic newspaper, the Herald, to use the word ‘Allah’.

“Even though Islam is the federal religion, it does not empower the respondents to prohibit the use of the word,” said High Court judge Lau Bee Lan.

Vice-President on tri-nation African visit next week

New Delhi, December 31: Several agreements are expected to be signed during Vice-President Hamid Ansari’s three-nation visit to Africa Jan 5-12.

Ansari will travel to Zambia, Malawi and Botswana in south-eastern Africa and a number of agreements will be inked during the visit, officials said Thursday.

India has several business interests in Zambia, especially in the mining sector. There had been substantial Indian investment in the African country, which amounts to over $2 billion.

T talk between industry captains, Telangana lead

Hyderabad, December 31: Efforts have begun to open a dialogue between captains of the industry in Hyderabad and the Telangana protagonists in the wake of the growing disquiet over continuous disruption to business operations because of the volatile situation in the State capital for a month now.

Two killed in Kerala gas tanker fire, highway cordoned off

Karunagapally, December 31: Two people were killed and at least 20 injured early Thursday when a gas tanker lost control after it hit a car and turned over in a blaze of fire on a national highway in Kerala.

The raging fire on National Highway 47 at Karunagapally, 85 km from state capital Thiruvananthapuram, also destroyed a police jeep, a car and several two wheelers, police said. The highway continued to be cordoned off, hours after the incident.

Woman arrested, four kg charas recovered

Kanpur, December 31: Police today arrested a woman hailing from Bihar and recovered four kilogram charas from her worth Rs 80,000 in the international market. DIG B P Jogdand told reporters here that in the morning hours, a woman under mysterious circumstances was arrested from Naubasta locality of the city and charas recovered from her.

The arrested woman was identified as Meena Devi and hails from Shugauli village in Bihar”s Motihari district, he said adding the woman is currently being interrogated.

Hyderabad, December 31: Amidst the Telangana bandh called by the Joint Action Committee, leaders of various political parties met Governor ESL Narasimhan at his official residence, Raj Bhavan, here today.

Pradesh Congress Committee president D Srinivas, who greeted the new Governor, told mediapersons that there was no significance to his meeting with the Governor.

Congress leader and Kadapa MP YS Jaganmohan Reddy, along with Marketing and Warehousing Minister Damodar Rajanarasimha also met the Governor to congratulate him on his new posting.

PR engineer caught taking bribe

Hyderabad, December 31: An executive engineer of Panchayat Raj department was caught by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) department today.

The EE of Panchayat Raj Department in Kakinada division of East Godavari district, B Narsimha Reddy, was caught redhanded by the ACB officials at his office in Kakinada today when he took Rs 7,000 bribe from a person to pass bills as final payment pertaining to the four civil works executed by the latter.

Narsimha Reddy would be arrested and produced before a special court for ACB cases in Vijayawada, an official release said.

OU students call off fast

Hyderabad, December 31: All the fasting students of Osmania University, who were shifted to the Gandhi General Hospital a couple of days ago, today withdrew their fast after the Centre invited all the political parties for a discussion on separate Telangana issue.

Seventeen OU students, who sat on an indefinite fast soon after Centre’s second statement on Telangana, were forcibly shifted to hospital a couple of days back.

Howrah-B’lore Duronto Exp from January 3

Hyderabad, December 31: As announced by Union Minister for Railways Mamata Banerjee in the Railway Budget, a new weekly non-stop train, Duronto Express, between Yeswantpur (Bengaluru) and Howrah (Kolkata) via Bhubaneswar, Vijayawada, Renigunta and Katpadi is being introduced from January 3.

The train, No.2245 Howrah- Yeswantpur Duronto Weekly Express will depart from Howrah on Fridays at 11.00 hours and arrive at Yeswantpur at 16.00 hours.the next day (Saturdays).

City life comes to a halt

Hyderabad, December 31: After 10 years, Non-Resident Indian (NRI) Kutumba Rao was looking forward to celebrating New Year and Pongal with his parents and childhood friends at his native Anakapalli in Visakhapatnam district. But all his plans went awry as he found himself stranded at the Secunderabad railway station along with his family since Tuesday evening, thanks to the bandh called by the Joint Action Committee (JAC).

He flew down to Hyderabad from America in about 20 hours, but had to wait for 24 hours to buy tickets to reach Anakapalli.

London, December 31: Al Qaeda militants are planning terror attacks from Yemen, prompting the country’s Foreign Minister to appeal for global support to shore up its counter-terrorist forces.

The plea by Abu Bakr al-Qirbi came after an al Qaeda group based in Yemen claimed responsibility for the attempted suicide bombing of American transatlantic jetliner on Christmas Day.

Move to outsource printing of textbooks flayed

Hyderabad, December 31: The Government Textbook Press Employees Union has opposed the government’s decision to outsource printing of textbooks to 82 contractors.

In a statement here today, the union said that the government’s decision can be inferred as a move to close down the press which prints textbooks that are distributed freely in government schools.

“If the press is shut down, nearly 600 families will lose their livelihood,’’ it said and demanded that they would protest if the government implemented its decision.

6-yr-old boy hit by motorbike dies

Hyderabad, December 31: A six-year-old boy died after being hit by a motorcycle at Singareni colony in Saidabad colony today.

Mahender, a resident of Chaderghat, came to his uncle’s house at Singareni Colony along with his mother Shoba.

While playing on the road, Mahender was hit by a motorist. The victim suffered internal injuries and died while being shifted to a local hospital.

Saidabad police said the accused fled from the scene after hitting the boy.

The police, however, seized the vehicle and efforts are on to nab the accused.

Do not check-in passengers with stapled Chinese visa: DGCA

New Delhi, December 31: The Directorate General of Civil Aviation has instructed all airlines not to check-in any passenger who has a Chinese visa stapled on his or her passport.

The instruction, issued late last evening, asks all airlines to “ensure that they do not check-in any passenger with stapled Chinese visa on their passports,” official sources said here.

Bangladesh defends Indian security deployment at embassy

Dhaka, December 31: Bangladesh on Thursday said foreign embassies here could deploy their own security personnel to guard their premises, dismissing opposition criticism over reports that India had sent a 50 member security squad for to secure its mission.

“The foreign missions can undertake steps on their own for the security and carry out other programmes inside their premises under the Vienna Convention,” a foreign ministry spokesman said.

She added that the premises of the foreign embassies were beyond the purview of the domestic law of the host countries.

Major churches seek security

Hyderabad, December 31: The National Congress of Indian Christians (NCIC) today urged the Home Minister and the Hyderabad Police Commissioner to provide security at major churches in the City on December 31 night. Talks only after cases are lifted: OU JAC

Hyderabad, December 31: While welcoming the Centre’s announcement to hold talks with political parties on the Telangana issue, the Osmania University Students Joint Action Committee (JAC) insists that political parties should first ensure that the cases against students are withdrawn before the talks begin.

“Politicians should ensure that the cases against students are withdrawn before they go for the talks with the Centre,” JAC member D Yellanna said here today.

High potato, pulses rates push food inflation

New Delhi, December 31: Food inflation rose to 19.83 percent for the week ended December 19 on the back of spurting prices of potato and pulses.

In the second week of December, the food inflation was at 18.65 percent.

Potato prices more than doubled while pulses became costly by over 41 percent over the last year. Onion rates rose by 40.75 percent.

Prices of vegetables rose by 46.7 percent while fruits became dearer by 10.35 percent.

60-day visa rule to stay: Chidambaram

New Delhi, December 31: Home Minister P Chidambaram on Thursday clarified that tourists will not be allowed to get another visa within 60 days of their visit to India despite protests by some countries about the rule being too stringent. However, he added that the rules can be relaxed in special cases.

“If the itinerary shows that the visit includes other neighbouring countries then the 60-day rule can be relaxed,” the Minister clarified, adding that there are only a miniscule number of tourists who use India as a base to visit other South Asian countries.
