No more talks over nuclear dispute: Ahmadinejad

Tehran, December 02: There will be no more talks over the nuclear dispute despite the latest resolution by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said.

“As far as we are concerned, Iran’s nuclear issue is finished, all technical aspects already settled with the IAEA and we will no longer talk to any country about this,” Ahmadinejad told state television Tuesday.

England have no alternative to imports, says Vaughan

Cape Town, December 02: England have little choice but to turn to the likes of Jonathan Trott and Kevin Pietersen due to the failings of the domestic system, according to Michael Vaughan.

The former England captain recently stirred up a storm by accusing Trott, born and raised in Cape Town, of celebrating with South African players in the wake of their series win in England last year. Vaughan wrote in his autobiography that it was a “sad day for English cricket” and that the incident “hit home what English cricket has become like”.

Brasilia, Dec 02: Brazilian mint tea, traditionally used to treat pain and different ailments, is as effective as commercially available analgesics in alleviating pain.

Mint tea is renowned for its healing properties in fighting digestive system problems such as stomach pains and flatulence.

Brazilian healers, however, had long been using a certain type of mint to treat various ailments from headaches and stomach pains to fever and the flu.

World’s biggest uranium firm coming to India

Toronto, December 02: Canada’s Cameco, the world’s biggest mining company, is set to enter India.

Cameco, which accounts for 15 percent of the world’s uranium production, Wednesday said the civil nuclear deal the two countries have agreed to sign has opened “an exciting opportunity” for it.

The global giant, which has opened an office in Hyderabad, said it will sell not only uranium but also mining technology to India.

Telangana activists torch Renuka Chowdhry’s office

Hyderabad, December 02: Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) activists Wednesday set ablaze Congress party leader and former union minister Renuka Chowdhry’s office in Khammam town, about 200 km from here.

The door and windows of the office were damaged when TRS workers torched the office after throwing petrol on it, police said. TRS wants to break away from Andhra Pradesh and form a separate Telangana state.

A group of TRS workers fled after setting the office on fire. Acting swiftly, security personnel brought the fire under control.

Policeman killed in blast during 2nd phase of Jharkhand polls

Ranchi, Dec 02: A policeman was on Wednesday killed in a landmine blast triggered by Maoists in Giridh district of Jharkhand where nine per cent turnout was recorded in the initial hours of voting in the second phase of polls for 14 Assembly seats.

Maoists triggered the landmine at Teliabahiar in Jharkhand’s Giridih district when policemen were on a foot patrol, Deputy Commissioner, Vandana Dadil, said.

The polling process in three assembly segments in Giridih district, however, was unaffected by the blast.

Sensex up 131 pts on global cues

Mumbai, Dec 02: Extending its gains for the third day in a row, the Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark index, Sensex, rose over 131 points in opening trade today, with shares of auto sector leading the rally, on continued foreign capital inflows amid firm global cues.

Sentiments were also bolstered by robust auto sales, higher cement shipments and strong September quarter GDP data.

The 30-share BSE Sensex rose 131.41 points, or 0.76 per cent, to 17,329.68 points in early trade with most of the sectoral indices trading in positive zone.

Breastfeeding women should take ARVs to reduce risk: UN

United Nations, Dec 02: The recommendations, based on the latest scientific data, also ask pregnant women to start taking the medicines as early as 14 weeks and continue throughout the breastfeeding period.

The UN has recommended intake of Antiretroviral drugs (ARVs) for breastfeeding women to reduce the mother-to-child HIV transmission risk to five per cent or lower.

The recommendations, based on the latest scientific data, also ask pregnant women to start taking the medicines as early as 14 weeks and continue throughout the breastfeeding period.

Obama’s Afghan policy receives mixed reaction

Washington, December 02: US President Barack Obama’s new Afghan policy today drew mixed reaction at the Capitol Hill with leading Congressmen welcoming it, while several members of his own party were reluctant to support it, if not directly oppose it.

Rupee up 17 paise against US dollar

Mumbai, Dec 02: Continuing with its gaining streak for the third straight day, the rupee today appreciated by 17 paise to touch one-week high at 46.14 against the US currency in opening trade on hopes of continued capital inflows into equity market.

Dollar’s losses versus other Asian currencies also supported the local unit.

At the Interbank Foreign Exchange (Forex) market, the local currency rose 17 paise to 46.14 a dollar, its highest since November 26. The rupee had closed 20 paise up at 46.31/32 in the previous session after the BSE benchmark Sensex recorded sharp gains.

“The strategy is not an exit strategy per se, but more about transfer and transition,” Admiral Mike Mullen, Chairman of the US Joint Chief of Staff, was quoted as saying by American Forces Press Service.

‘Muslims should withdraw their money from Swiss banks’

Estanbul, December 02: Turkish State Minister and Chief Negotiator for EU talks Egemen Bagis has urged Muslim nations to withdraw their money from Swiss banks.

Bagis’ comments came in response to a recently approved ban on the construction of new minarets in Switzerland.

Following a weekend referendum, the construction of any new minaret was declared illegal in Switzerland, a move which drew sharp criticism from Muslim and European countries, as well as the UN and the Vatican.
