Obama ‘authorises’ expansion of war in Pak

Washington, December 02: As the US announced deepening of its involvement in Afghanistan by dispatching 30,000 more troops, President Barack Obama has quietly authorised an expansion of war against terrorism in Pakistan under which CIA would widen its campaign of strikes against militants by unmanned drones.

The expanded operations by the CIA could include drone strikes in the southern province of Baluchistan, where senior Afghan Taliban leaders are believed to be hiding, New York Times reported today quoting officials.

Germany still paying World War I reparations

Berlin, December 02: Germany is still paying World War I reparations, more than 90 years after that conflict ended with a peace treaty at Versailles in 1919.

The country is expected to pay off the remaining 56 million euros (84 million dollars) in interest and repayments by October 3, 2010, Germany’s Bild newspaper reported Wednesday, citing a spokesman of the German Finance Agency, which manages the government’s debts and borrowing.

From 2012, ICSE students need to pass only one language-English

Kolkata, Dec 02: The Council for the Indian School Certificate Examination (CISCE) has come up with a provision that a student can pass the Class X examination with only one language subject — English.

From 2012, a student appearing for ICSE examination will not be required to pass in the second language paper — in case of Bengal it is Bengali or Hindi. Most of the Boards at Class X level, including the state Board, make it mandatory for students to qualify in two language papers.

Longevity: it’s in the genes

Washington, December 02: Female mice produced by using genetic material from two mothers but no father live longer than mice with the normal mix of maternal and paternal genes.

These findings provide the first evidence that sperm genes may have a detrimental effect on the lifespan of mammals.

The research found that mice created from two female genomes (bi-maternal (BM) mice) lived an average of 186 days longer than control mice created from the normal combination of a male and female genome.

New method helps reconstruct crime scene

London, December 02: Two researchers have developed a method to help forensic experts lift data from crime scenes using just a single photograph.
“We have studied an unprecedented and original line of research in the field of criminology and forensic engineering, which makes it possible to derive metric data from a single image,” says Diego González-Aguilera, study co-author.

González-Aguilera is a researcher in cartography and soil engineering at the University of Salamanca in Spain.

Four soldiers killed in explosion in Indian army base

New Delhi, December 02: At least four Indian army soldiers were killed in a powerful explosion at a military base in the northern state of Punjab, officials said Wednesday. The blast occurred Tuesday night when a vehicle battery which was being charged exploded in the motor transport section of the army cantonment in the central Jalandhar district.

Army spokesman Naresh Vig said all four soldiers died on the scene and the blast triggered a blaze that engulfed vehicles parked in the area.

Maoists behead teacher in Goaltore

Kolkata, Dec 02: The beheaded body of a school teacher, who was kidnapped by the Maoists, was found in a forest near Goaltore in West Midnapore district on Tuesday, police sources said.

Satya Kinkar Hansda, a resident of Sirisboni village, had been warned by the ultras for being a member of a rival organization and was picked up by an armed cadre on Monday night.

Beckhams design T-shirts for charity

London, December 02: The Beckham family has designed T-shirts for next year’s Sport Relief, which raises money for vulnerable people in Britain and developing countries.

Soccer star David Beckham along with wife Victoria and sons Brooklyn, Romeo and Cruz have produced tops for the charity, reported thesun.co.uk

Initially, only Victoria was going to be involved, but she persuaded David to sketch the men’s shirt. The boys’ ideas will be turned into kids’ clothes.

Turkish President Gul wants nuclear weapons-free Middle East

Amman, December 02: Turkish President Abdullah Gul called Tuesday for a Middle East free of all weapons of mass destruction and a “diplomatic” solution to the standoff over Iran’s nuclear programme.

“We don’t want to see any mass destruction arms in our region from any source,” Gul said in an interview with the state-run Jordan Television.

Though he was responding to a question about Iran’s controversial nuclear programme, Gul was also alluding to Israel, which is widely believed to possess nuclear arms and has refused to join the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty.

Rajya Sabha mourns Bhopal gas tragedy victims

New Delhi, December 02: The Rajya Sabha Wednesday mourned the victims of the Bhopal gas disaster of 1984, expressing the members’ “heartfelt sympathies” for the “human tragedy of unparalleled magnitude”.

As soon as the upper house assembled at 11 a.m., House Chairman and Vice President Hamid Ansari read out a statement, saying that the “scars of the tragedy still haunt us”.

“It was a human tragedy of unparalleled magnitude and shocked the world. It is incumbent on us to do the utmost for the victims,” Ansari said.

Tribunal to deal with varsity disputes in Bihar

Patna, December 02: Bihar government will constitute a tribunal to deal with the growing number of university disputes – mostly related to retirement dues and promotion.

“The proposed body would be on the lines of the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) and facilitate the solving of university disputes,” Anjani Kumar Singh, Principal Secretary State Human Resource Development said today.

Iranian journalist gets nine-year jail term over unrest

Tehran, December 02: An Iranian court judiciary issued a nine-year jail term against journalist and analyst Saeid Laylaz for involvement in the June post-election unrest, Fars news agency reported Wednesday.

Laylaz, chief editor of the economic daily Sarmayeh, was convicted of attending protest demonstrations and keeping classified information.

Laylaz’s lawyer Mahmoud Alizadeh said he would appeal the verdict within the 20-day legal time-period.

Fellow Iraqi turns tables on Bush shoe-thrower

Paris, December 02: An Iraqi reporter imprisoned for throwing his shoes at US President George W Bush found himself on the receiving end of a similar footwear attack in Paris on late Tuesday.

Muntazer al-Zaidi, whose flare-up against Bush last December turned into a symbol of Iraqi anger, was speaking at a news conference to promote his campaign for victims of the war in Iraq when a man in the audience hurled a shoe at him.

It hit the wall next to his head and a scuffle ensued in the audience, television footage showed.

Scientists develop device to diagnose cervical cancer in minutes

London, Dec 02: A new device that will reduce the time to diagnose the ailment from several weeks to just a couple of minutes has been designed by British scientists.

The new device — APX — looks like a TV remote control with a pen like probe on its end. Researchers believe it will also ease the trauma of smear-testing for thousands of women.

The APX, originally developed at Sheffield University and now being developed by Sheffield technology firm Zilico Ltd, operates by passing a very mild electric current into the cervix and monitoring its movement through the cells.

Iran frees 5 detained British sailors: Report

Tehran, December 02: Five British yachtsmen who were detained last week in southern Gulf waters by Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards have been released, a statement by the elite force said on Wednesday.

“The five Britishers who had illegally entered with their vessel into the territorial waters of the Islamic Republic of Iran and who were arrested near the Siri island have been freed hours ago,” Fars news agency quoted the statement as saying.

The Guards said the five sailors were interrogated and “after investigation it became evident that their illegal entry was a mistake.”

Govt favours quiet talks on Kashmir: Chidambaram

New Delhi, Dec 02: The Central Government on Wednesday said it favoured “quiet talks” to resolve the festering Kashmir dispute.

“The prime minister and I offered to talk to every shade of public opinion. The response has been encouraging,” Home Minister P. Chidambaram said during question hour in the Rajya Sabha.

“I am in favour of quiet talks and quiet diplomacy far off from the glare of the media,” he said. “At the appropriate stage, I will share with the house the contours of the settlement that may emerge.”

Mount Abu remains coldest in Rajasthan

Jaipur, December 02: Mount Abu remained the coldest place in Rajasthan with a minimum temperature of 5 degree Celsius followed by Churu and Ganganagar at 8 degree Celsius, a Met official said here today.

Bundi and Dabok recorded a minimum of 10 C, while Jaipur, Pilani, Rawatbhata and Sawaimadhopur recorded 12 C, he said.

Jaisalmer and Ajmer recorded 13 degrees C, while Kota and Jodhpur recorded a low of 14 and 15 degrees Celsius respectively.

Mercury in the state would dip further in the next few days, according to a MET forecast.

Typhoons to hit Philippine growth, increase poverty -World Bank

Manila, December 02: Two typhoons which struck the Philippines’ main island of Luzon in recent months will probably dampen growth in the near term, stretch state finances and push 480,000 people into poverty, a post-disaster report showed on Wednesday.

Damages and losses to crops, property, and infrastructure from typhoons Ketsana and Parma reached nearly $4.4 billion, or 2.7 percent of the Southeast Asian country’s gross domestic product, according to the post-disaster needs assessment report issued by the World Bank.

OU students vow to carry on fight

Hyderabad, December 02: Students of the Osmania University are now planning to take forward the Telangana Statehood movement with renewed vigour. While students lashed out at Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) chief K Chandrasekhar Rao earlier on Tuesday, they softened their stand later following reports of the leader’s deteriorating health condition.

The JAC demanded that the government shift Chandrasekhar Rao to a city hospital or to Cherlapally prison.

Obama’s Afghan strategy draws fire

Washington, December 02: US President Barack Obama’s new strategy for the conflict in Afghanistan has drawn sharp criticism from both opposition Republicans and within the ranks of his own Democrats.

Obama unveiled the plan – anchored by the deployment of 30,000 more troops to the war zone – in a national address Tuesday evening.

The reinforcements are to surge into Afghanistan by July – with a timeframe a year later for the beginning of withdrawals and the transfer of security responsibility to the Kabul government, depending on conditions on the ground.

Four arrested for raping minor and filming it

Lakhimpur, December 02: Four people including a teacher have been arrested here for allegedly raping a minor and filming it, police said today.

Dinesh and his associates Nishan alias Shanu, Gurvinder and Taj Mohammad were arrested from Kheri town yesterday for raping a 14-year-old girl here and preparing obscene video clips to blackmail her, they added.

A case has been registered and further investigation is on, they said.

Cop commits suicide in support of Telangana

Nizamabad, December 02: A police constable committed suicide here by shooting himself with his service revolver atop a cell phone tower here in the wee hours of today in support of separate Telangana, police said P Kistaiah (37), associated with the Machareddy police station, climbed a mobile phone tower in Kamareddy and raised slogans in support of Telangana Policemen and civilians who gathered there tried to placate him to come down but he shot himself with his service revolver, Kamareddy police sub-inspector B Shankar said.

Talks with Naxals only if they abjure violence: Chidambaram

New Delhi, December 02: Government was not averse to holding talks with Naxalites provided they abjure violence, Home Minister P Chidambaram informed the Rajya Sabha today. ”I have offered talks with Naxalites if they abjure violence. We cannot talk about any subject till these groups adjure violence,”Mr Chidambaram said during Question hour.

The Minister said the policy of the Government was that they were willing to hold talks with Naxal groups or facilitate talks between them and the state Government. However, for this to happen, they had to abjure violence.

Powerful bomb found inside hospital complex in Imphal

Imphal, December 02: A bomb was found inside the campus of Regional Institute of Medical Science and Hospital (RIMSH) here in Imphal West district of Manipur, police said.

The explosive, weighing about 5 kg, was detected on Tuesday by a security patrol.

Bomb disposal squad personnel later defused the explosive, which was attached with a long wire and could have been triggered by a remote control device, they said.

Expressing shock over the incident RIMSH Director L Fimate urged all sections of the society not to create disturbances within the hospital and institute.
