Koda hospitalised; IT raids continue

Ranchi, November 03: Former Jharkhand Chief Minister Madhu Koda, who is under the Income Tax scanner for alleged hawala transactions, was on Tuesday admitted to a hospital in Ranchi after he complained of illness.

“He was admitted to hospital around noon after he complained of some ailment. He is in the intensive care unit. The doctors are attending on him and only after getting the pathological report can we say about the ailment,” a spokesman of the Abur Razzak Memorial Weavers Hospital Javed Akhtar, told PTI.

Ban on pre-paid mobile services temporary: Farooq

Srinagar, November 03: Union New and Renewable Energy Minister Farooq Abdullah today said that the ban imposed by the Centre on prepaid mobile phone connections in Jammu and Kashmir was “temporary” and would be lifted soon.

“The ban on prepaid cell phone connections in the state is temporary and would be lifted soon,” Abdullah told reporters here in S K Stadium.

Abdullah said the ban was imposed as Centre had apprehensions that the mobile connections were being misused.

Andhra launches pension-cum-insurance scheme for poor women

Hyderabad, November 03: The Andhra Pradesh government Sunday launched the YSR ‘Abhaya Hastam’ (Helping Hand), a co-contributory pension-cum-insurance scheme for poor and low income women.

Chief Minister K. Rosaiah launched the scheme, named after former chief minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, who devised the scheme and formally announced it earlier this year.

Karachi, Train Crash Toll Rises To 10

Islamabad, November 03: The death toll in a train accident near the Jumma Goth Quaidabad area of Karachi has reached 10 of 38 passengers were injured in the incident.

Allama Iqbal Express, which ran to the interior Karachi Tuesday morning, hit a stationary freight train in the area Jumma Goth.

The accident halted train traffic on the main runway. Railroad division superintendent has said that traffic will be restored within three to four hours.

10-year-old stripped naked, chained and dragged for theft

Lucknow, November 03: A 10-year-old boy was assaulted, stripped naked, chained and then dragged for several metres by a group of shopkeepers in an Uttar Pradesh village on charges of stealing Rs.20, police said today.

The inhumane treatment was meted out to Sainki, a resident of Dayanand Sagar village in Muzaffarnagar district, about 350 km from state capital Lucknow, police said.

Ajmer Shatabdi runs down four, passengers stranded

Gurgaon, November 03: Four people were run over by a train near this suburban city early today leading to angry protests that saw hundreds of passengers aboard the New Delhi-Ajmer Shatabdi Express being stranded.

The incident took place in Pataudi, 26 km from this satellite town in Haryana, at about 7.30 a.m., railway officials said. “Four people were run over by the New Delhi-Ajmer Shatabdi express this morning when they were illegally crossing the railway tracks in Pataudi. The accident happened at 7.30 a.m.,” Anant Swarup, spokesperson of the Northern Railways, told the media.

Congress in Andhra divided over poll tie-up with Chiranjeevi

Hyderabad, November 03: Serious differences have cropped up in the ruling Congress in Andhra Pradesh following its state chief’s decision to forge an alliance with the Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) of actor-cum-politician Chiranjeevi for the ensuing Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) elections.

Lucknow, November 03: His Urdu poetry book is just 130 pages long, but Uttar Pradesh resident Waqarul Hasnain took more than a decade to write it. That’s because his work makes use of only 14 letters and doesn’t contain a single ‘nukta’ – dots commonly used to form words in the script.

Hasnain, a retired primary school teacher and resident of Rampur district, some 270 km from Lucknow, has come up with the unique book titled “Murassaye Hilm”.

Dal Khalsa activists stop trains in Amritsar

Amritsar, November 03: Dal Khalsa activists stopped trains at the Amritsar Railway station Tuesday following a call for a strike across Punjab. The radical activists are demanding justice for the thousands of victims who were killed in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in Delhi and other places.

The Amritsar-New Delhi Shatabdi Express, Jan Shatabdi Express, Sachkhand Express, Dadar Express, Super Express and the Deluxe train were stopped by Dal Khalsa activists at the railway station here.

Scores of activists squatted on the rail tracks and blocked trains from moving out.

Ponting feared 250 would not be enough

Mohali, November 03: Relieved after the series-levelling 24-run win, Australia captain Ricky Ponting said he was afraid that 250-run may not be enough but his bowlers made it possible.

43 nominations filed for GHMC election

Hyderabad, November 02: A total of 43 nominations were filed today for the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) elections scheduled to be held on November 23.

With today’s nominations, their total number so far is 53, State Election Commission sources said.

As per the schedule announced for the civic polls in the Andhra Pradesh capital, the last date for nominations is November six. The nomination papers would be scrutinised on November seven and the last date for withdrawal is November 10.

Two injured in grenade attack at shrine in Baramulla

Srinagar, November 02: Suspected militants hurled a grenade at a shrine in Baramulla district this evening, injuring two persons, police said.

The grenade was hurled at the devotees visiting the shrine at Athasan Mohalla near Palhullan, 40 kms from here, police said adding two vendors were injured in the attack.

No militant organisation has owned responsibility for the attack, the police said.
