Over Rs 14 lakh stolen from ATM machine

Hyderabad, November 04: Unidentified persons stole a sum of over Rs 14 lakh from an ATM machine of ICICI Bank in Peddapuram town in East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh, police said today.

The amount stocked in the machine seems to have been stolen between October 31 and November 1, but the Bank authorities filed a complaint on the incident this morning, they said.

Moderate quake hits northern Japan

Tokyo, November 04: A moderate, 5.5-magnitude offshore earthquake hit southern Japan today, the US Geological Survey said, although there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage and no tsunami alert was issued.

The quake struck at 4:03 am (local time) 142 kilometres southwest of the country’s remote, Bonin Islands, which lie some 1,000 km south of the capital, Tokyo, at a depth of 86 km, the US agency said.

Around 20 per cent of the world’s most powerful earthquakes strike Japan.

Karzai rules out sacking corrupt Afghan ministers

Kabul, November 04: Hamid Karzai began his new presidency yesterday with a pledge to reach out to opponents and tackle the corrosive corruption which has deeply tainted his government and led to widespread international condemnation.

But he appeared to rule out sacking ministers and officials accused of corruption and did not say how he would tackle the systemic malpractice and criminality which has undermined governance during his tenure.

All-rounder Afridi helps Pakistan sink New Zealand

Abu Dhabi, November 04: Shahid Afridi hit an aggressive half-century and took two wickets to cap Pakistan’s 138-run win over New Zealand in the first day-night international here today.

Afridi’s 50-ball 71 supplemented by Kamran Akmal’s undefeated 43-ball 67 and Khalid Latif’s steady maiden fifty lifted Pakistan to an imposing 287-9 before they shot New Zealand out for 149 in the 40th over.

The victory, which gave Pakistan a 1-0 lead in the three-match one-day series, was also a sweet revenge for the winners who lost to New Zealand in the Champions Trophy semi-final last month.

Lashkar was targeting National Defence College in India: FBI

Washington, November 04: David Coleman Headley and Tahawwur Hussain Rana, arrested last month by the FBI, were part of a LeT plan of a major terror attack on the facilities of a Danish newspaper and the National Defence College in India, federal prosecutors have said.

Opposing the bail application of Rana before a Chicago court yesterday, attorneys from the US Department of Justice said Rana is a danger to the community and might leave the country, if released.

Rana faces a maximum sentence of 30 years, if proved guilty.

Rukhsana fears for family’s safety refuses SPO’s job

Srinagar, November 04: Jammu: Rukhsana Kausar, the brave girl who killed a Lashkar-e-Toiba terrorist at her home in J&K’s Rajouri district, on Tuesday declined the job of Special Police Officer (SPO) in J&K police.

Rukhsana, along with her brother and uncle, was offered the job of SPO more than a month after she killed a top Pakistani militant of the LeT and injured another on September 27.

Iran hangs convicted Sunni rebel

Tehran, November 04: Iran hanged a member of a Sunni rebel group blamed for deadly attacks in the predominantly Shia Muslim state, the semi-official Fars news agency reported Tuesday.

“Abdol-Hamid Rigi was hanged inside the main prison of Zahedan on Monday,” the agency quoted top police official Gholam-Ali Nekouie as saying, referring to the capital city of Sistan-Baluchestan province.

Johnson & Johnson to cut 8,000 jobs

New York, November 04: US consumer goods and pharmaceutical company Johnson & Johnson said Tuesday it would cut around 8,000 jobs in a bid to trim costs in the wake of the recession.

The lay-offs amount to some 6 percent to 7 percent of the company’s employees.

They are designed to save some $1.7 billion by 2011, the New Brunswick, New Jersey-based company said. One-time costs of up to $1.3 billion will fall in the current quarter.

US, EU resume talks on climate change

Washington, November 04: The US and European Union resumed talks on climate change Tuesday as they intensify efforts to reach an accord ahead of next month’s UN summit in Copenhagen, expressing confidence a pact could be reached.

US President Barack Obama said the discussions focused “extensively” on reaching a deal to reduce greenhouse gases by 2020. Obama has accepted the goals for reducing global warming but has come under increasing pressure from the European Union to do more.

GM confirms to keep Opel, scraps Magna deal

Washington, November 04: General Motors’ board voted Tuesday to hold on to its Opel division rather than sell a majority stake to Canada-based Magna, ending months of uncertainty and dashing the hopes of German officials.

“Given an improving business environment for GM over the past few months, and the importance of Opel-Vauxhall to GM’s global strategy, the GM board of directors has decided to retain Opel and will initiate a restructuring of its European operations in earnest,” GM said in a statement.

12 injured as train derails near Mumbai

Mumbai, November 04: At least 12 passengers sustained minor injuries when 11 coaches of the Gandhidham-Bengaluru Express derailed near Dombivili here early Wednesday, a railway official said.

“The incident occurred around 2 a.m. near Dombivli on the single-line Vasai-Diva section which links the Western Raiwlay and Central Railway,” said an official of the railway control room.

Of the 11 coaches that derailed, at least two overturned and got badly damaged in the incident.

All the passengers, most of whom were sleeping at the time of the accident, had a miraculous escape.

Pirated Windows 7 generates $100,000 in India

Lucknow, November 04: About 50,000 pirated DVDs of Microsoft Windows 7 are estimated to have been sold here since the official launch on Oct 22, generating unaccounted business of around Rs.50 lakh (nearly $100,000).

The reason for the allure of the pirated versions: These cost Rs.40-Rs.250 in Naza Market in Hazratganj here, drawing buyers from not only the rest of Uttar Pradesh and neighbouring states like Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Uttarakhand but also Nepal and Bangladesh.

India’s National Defence College was terror target

Washington, November 04: Two Pakistan-born Chicago men charged with plotting to launch terrorist attacks in India and Denmark in association with Pakistan based terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) were targeting India’s National Defence College (NDC), a US court was told.

In court papers filed in Chicago Tuesday to have a federal judge detain Chicago businessman Tahawwura Hussain Rana without bond, federal prosecutors said he discussed the attack on NDC with David Coleman Headley, a Pakistan-born American national.

US Pays Muslims for 9/11 Abuses

Washington, November 04: The US government will pay $1.2 million to settle a lawsuit with five Muslim immigrants who were unfairly detained and abused following the 9/11 attacks.

“I believe a settlement of this size is a deterrent to the United States from ever again rounding up innocent non-citizens based only on suspicion about their race and religion,” lawyer Rachel Meeropol told.

The lawsuit was first filed as a class action in 2002 against then-Attorney General John Ashcroft, FBI Director Robert Mueller and other US official.

AP’s rice output likely to fall due to drought

Hyderabad, November 04: Rice production in Andhra Pradesh is likely to fall to as low as 48.75 lakh tonnes this year because of drought, Chief Minister K Rosaiah said on Tuesday.

The state produced 83.8 lakh tonnes of rice last year, the Chief Minister said, quoting the advanced estimates provided by the Economics and Statistics Department.

Rosaiah was interacting with a high-level inter-ministerial team from the Centre, headed by Joint Secretary (seeds) in the Agriculture Ministry, Upma Chowdhry, at the state Secretariat here.

Swami Ramdev promotes yoga at Deoband gathering

Deoband, November 04 : Renowned yoga guru Swami Ramdev sought to promote his method of keeping fit and dispel misconceptions about it at the gathering of clerics and followers at the historic Islamic seminary here.

Ramdev was the first non-Muslim cleric to address the annual convention of Islamic seminaries under the auspices of Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind at the seminary, known for its influence over bulk of the Sunni Muslims across the country.
