Nitish govt diluting RTI provisions in Bihar: RJD

Patna, November 04: The opposition RJD today accused the Bihar government of diluting the RTI provisions in the state and strongly objected to the reported move to hike the fee charged for every information.

“The NDA government is proposing to amend the Bihar RTI rule and increase the fee to Rs ten for every information. The RJD will oppose it tooth and nail,” RJD spokesman Shakeel Ahmed Khan told PTI.

Passenger arrested for molesting airhostess

Mumbai, November 04: A 51-year-old passenger on a Jet Airways flight from Dubai has been arrested on arrival at the Mumbai airport on the charge of molesting an airhostess, police said today.

The accused identified as Selvaraj Pillai, a supervisor with an electrical company in Dubai, had boarded the Mumbai- bound flight last evening and allegedly misbehaved with the hostess.

J-K govt serious about unemployment problem: Farooq

Srinagar, November 04: National Conference President Farooq Abdullah today said the coalition government in Jammu and Kashmir was serious about addressing the issue of unemployment.

“The NC-led government in the state is serious about addressing the unemployment problem and in this connection the government is doing its best to expand tourism, agriculture, horticulture and handicraft sectors,” Abdullah said here.

Ten injured in police lathicharge in Patna

Patna, November 04: Ten persons were injured here as police resorted to lathicharge and burst teargas shells to disperse agitating employees of fair price dealers’ shops today.

Hundreds of employees of the fair price dealers from across the state, brought out a procession on Bailey Road, led by their association leader Srikant Labh and later blocked the busy Dak Bungalow Road, official sources said.

As the agitators refused to budge despite requests by the security men, baton-wielding policemen swung into action.

11 Militants Killed In Waziristan Operation

Wana, November 04: At least 11 militants were killed during the operation of security forces in tehsil and Kanogoram Ladha in the tribal region of South Waziristan.

The forces have also destroyed a center for militants in the area.The troops engaged in search operation in the strategic village of Nawazkot along with a search and clearance operation in the Taliban stronghold Sararogha.

BJP seeks Chidambaram’s apology on Vande Mataram

New Delhi, November 04: BJP today sought apology from Home Minister P Chidambaram as it was not satisfied by his clarification that he was not aware of Deoband resolution against recitation of Vande Mataram.

BJP, which condemned Jamiat-Ulema-e-Hind’s resolution yesterday and attacked Chidambaram for being part of the function where it was adopted, took a dig at him, saying he ought to know such things in advance.

No resolution against Vande Mataram before me: PC

New Delhi, November 04: Union Home Minister P Chidambaram today contended that he was not present when the Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind adopted a resolution at its 30th general session in Deoband yesterday asking Muslims not to recite ‘Vande Mataram’.

“Home Minister P Chidambaram was at the JUH conference at Deoband on November 3 between 10 am and 12 noon. No resolution was passed during that period. When he spoke, he was not aware of any resolution relating to Vande Mataram or women’s reservation and television,” a statement issued by his office said.

Over 500 million Indians own telephones

New Delhi, November 04: The country’s telecom subscriber base has crossed the 500 million-mark and the growth milestone has been achieved 15 months ahead of target.

The country had targeted reaching this number by end of 2010, but actually crossed this mark in September this year.

The number of telephone subscribers in India increased to 509.03 million at the end of September from 494.07 million in August, registering a growth rate of 3.03 per cent. The set target of 500 million telephones by the end of 2010 has been achieved by September 2009, telecom regulator TRAI said today.

Afghan policeman kills five UK soldiers

Kabul, November 04: Five British soldiers have been killed by an Afghan policeman at a checkpoint in Afghanistan’s Helmand province.

“An Afghan national policeman from the checkpoint started firing without warning before anyone could really respond,” an Afghan defense ministry statement said Wednesday.

“The soldiers were all killed as a result of gunshot wounds sustained in an attack in the Nad-e’Ali district of Helmand Province during the afternoon of November 3, 2009,” the statement said.

Abdullah: Decision to name Karzai president had no legal basis

Kabul, November 04: Afghan presidential challenger Abdullah Abdullah on Wednesday sharply criticized the decision of the country’s election commission to declare incumbent Hamid Karzai the winner of Afghanistan’s disputed presidential elections.

Abdullah, who pulled out of a scheduled November 7 runoff with Karzai on Sunday, said there was “no legal basis” for the decision of the Independent Election Commission (IEC).

However, the former foreign minister refrained from calling for protests and asked his supporters to remain calm.

Lucknow, November 04: Former Indian cricket team captain and Congress MP Mohammad Azharuddin and union Minister for Road Transport and Highways R. P. N. Singh have been charged with violating the election code of conduct ahead of by-polls in Uttar Pradesh, police said Wednesday.

Singh and Azharuddin — who is the Congress MP from Moradabad — addressed public meetings in Uttar Pradesh’s Kushinagar district Tuesday, some 300 km fromLucknow, without taking the mandatory permission from the district administration, police said.

Teacher strips girl student by force, takes photos

Lucknow, November 04: A teacher of a private school in an Uttar Pradesh village has been accused of forcibly stripping a 10-year-old girl student and photographing her on his mobile phone, police said Wednesday.

Rajesh Shukla Tuesday allegedly molested the Class 5 student of Swamy Harihar School in Mahmoodpur village of Uttar Pradesh’s Kannauj district, some 250 km from Lucknow. He was absconding.

“We are carrying out raids to nab Shukla. We have detained the managerial staff of the school to know the whereabouts of the teacher,” police Inspector F. A. Pundir told reporters in Kannauj.

Yemeni gunmen ‘kill Saudi border guard’

Riyadh, November 04: A cross-border attack by Yemeni fighters kills a Saudi soldier and injures 11 others as Riyadh faces mounting hatred over its involvement in Sana’a offensive in the north.

The attack took place early on Tuesday near the kingdom’s southern border area of Jebel Doukhan, across from an area where Yemeni forces have been fighting Houthi fighters, the Saudi state news agency SPA reported on Wednesday.
