Seven killed in road accident in Andhra

Hyderabad, November 05: Seven persons, including a three-year-old kid, were killed and five others seriously injured in a road accident in Andhra Pradesh’s Kurnool district on Wednesday, police said.

The mishap occurred when the auto in which they were travelling collided head-on with a milk tanker on National Highway-7 near Jagadharti village, they said.

Five of the passengers were killed on the spot, while two others died while undergoing treatment at a hospital, they said.

AMU suspends six students for violence

Aligarh, November 05: The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has suspended six students for indulging in violence, assaulting varsity officials and disrupting academic activities during protests against the murder of a student, the university said today.

“The students were suspended for indulging in violence and vandalism. They have been barred from entering the campus,” AMU spokesperson Rahat Abrar told reporters in Aligarh, some 300 km from Lucknow.

The decision was taken on Wednesday.

Shoe-throwing scribe to release book on anti-Sikh riots

New Delhi, November 05: Jarnail Singh, the Sikh journalist who created headlines for throwing a shoe at Home Minister P. Chidambaram for the injustice committed towards the victims of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, has written a book on the riots.

The book — to be released here Friday — is titled “I Accuse…” in English and “Kab Kategi Chaurasi” (When will 1984 pass) in Hindi. It is being published by Penguin.

‘Vande mataram’ not un-Islamic, say two Muslim groups

Bhopal, November 05: It is not un-Islamic to sing “Vande mataram”, two prominent Muslim groups in Madhya Pradesh said today, two days after the clerics’ body Jamiat Ulema-i-Hind approved an earlier fatwa against the national song.

Claiming to have translated the song into Urdu, the All India Muslim Tehwar Committee (AIMTC) and the National Secularism Front of India (NSFI) say it is simply a prayer to keep the nation safe.

UN relocating 600 staff after Taliban attack

Kabul, November 05: The United Nations said today that it is temporarily relocating more than half its staff in Afghanistan following last week’s deadly Taliban attack.

The UN mission is still reeling from a pre-dawn assault on a guesthouse in the capital last week that left five UN staff dead.

Iran will seek new ways to arm Hezbollah, Israeli officials say

Tel Aviv, November 05: Tehran will probably find new routes to smuggle arms to the Lebanese Hezbollah guerrilla group, Israeli defence officials said Thursday – a day after Israeli commandos seized a ship en route from Iran to Lebanon with hundreds of tons of weapons on board.

An eyewitness in the 2002 Gulberg massacre case has told the fast-track court that while his house was under attack by rioters, Congress leader Ehsan Jafri had made a phone call to Chief Minister Narendra Modi for help only to be abused by the latter.

The witness, identified as Imtiaz Saeed Khan Pathan (32), is one of the survivors of the Gulberg Society massacre. A number of Muslims of the locality had taken shelter at Jafri’s residence during the riots.

Pigs Menace: Flight Hit By Pigs Herd

Harare, November 05: Two people were slightly injured after a passenger aircraft of Zimbabwe’s state-owned airline crashed on take-off after colliding with a herd of wild pigs, officials said Thursday.

Trsnsport Minister Nicholas Goche told the state-controlled Herald newspaper that the Air Zimbabwe MA60 plane, on a flight to the western city of Bulawayo on Tuesday was about to lift off from Harare airport’s runway shortly after dark when the pigs ran into its path.

“The nose (of the Chinese-made 60-seater) and left main landing gear collapsed after impact,” he said.

Australia rules out Afghan troop surge

Kabul, November 05: Australia has announced that it will not send any additional forces to Afghanistan after a recent troop surge earlier this year.

Australian Defense Minister John Faulkner informed US Defense Secretary Robert Gates in Washington about Canberra’s decision.

“There is a very clear understanding and appreciation of the fact that Australia increased the number of troops to Afghanistan very significantly on April 29 this year,” said Faulkner.

Australia has the largest non-NATO presence in Afghanistan with 1,550 troops deployed.

Indian enterprises face data loss risk: Study

Bangalore, November 05: Increasing use of IT infrastructure by Indian enterprises to enhance productivity and expand operations in a competitive environment has led to growing security risks such as loss of critical data, a study by the intelligence marketing firm IDC (India) Ltd. has revealed.

“About 80 percent of Indian enterprises have agreed that loss or theft of critical data is a serious information security risk they face after threats from viruses and hackers,” the survey, commissioned by security solutions provider Symantec India, said in its latest report.

Gunmen fire on bus in south Philippines, killing 2

Zamboanga (Philippines), November 05: Gunmen opened fire on a commuter bus in the restive southern Philippines, killing two and wounding eight passengers, authorities said today.

The bus was strafed along a coastal highway shortly after leaving Gutalac town in Zamboanga del Norte province yesterday, said regional military spokesman Maj David Hontiveros.

Two passengers died and eight others were treated in a hospital for gunshot wounds, he said.

It was not clear who was responsible for the attack. The gunmen fled, leaving behind empty bullet shells, he said.
