Documentary on Leprosy awareness shot by Priyanka

Mumbai, November Priyanka Chopra is spreading awareness about leprosy. She recently shot for a documentary for an organization, Alert India. According to Veera Rao, the director of the organization, the documentary will be presented on November 5 at a charity dinner.

The documentary was supposed to be in English only, but Priyanka asked them to do a Hindi version too because it would appeal to the rural masses and rid their false notions about the disease.

12 killed in US Army base shooting spree

Washington, November 06: A US Army officer opened fire on a base in Texas Thursday, killing 11 people before being shot to death by the police. Two other soldiers were in custody, authorities said.

An additional 31 people were wounded in the rampage at Fort Hood and were being treated in a nearby hospital, Lieutenant General Robert Cone, the base commander, said. The dead gunman was armed with two handguns, he said.

“It’s a terrible tragedy. It’s stunning,” Cone said.

People have tried to pull me down: Emraan

Mumbai, November 06: One of Bollywood’s most bankable stars, Emraan Hashmi, says people have contantly tried to pull him down. He also believes the new film “Tum Mile” will present him in a new avatar, having mostly essayed roles with shades of grey.

“In the kind of industry I am, every creative person has a judgement to make about someone else’s performance. After doing a movie, I may think that I have come up with my best act, but others may think otherwise. You can’t help it,” shrugs Emraan, 30.

India’s Chinglensana fails to win archery medal

Kolkata: India’s sole individual medal hope Maisnam Chinglensana Luwang bowed out of the semi finals and then lost the play-off for the bronze in the men’s compound bow event of the third Asian Indoor Games Archery competition in Hanoi, Vietnam, Thursday.

The Manipur-born armyman lost to ultimate gold medal winner Reza Zamaninejad of Iran 111-117 in the last four battle at the Haiphong Youth Gymnasium, according to information received here.

Later in the day, he went down to another Iranian Mansour Kordi 110-112 in a third place play-off.

Haryana ministry swearing-in put off

Chandigarh, November 05: Barely 12 hours before new ministers were to be inducted in the Congress’s second successive government in Haryana under Bhupinder Singh Hooda, the swearing-in ceremony was postponed, an official said Thursday evening.

The swearing-in ceremony was to take place Friday at 11 a.m. at the Haryana Raj Bhawan.

“The swearing-in ceremony has been postponed,” a state government spokesman told IANS.

DPS Ghaziabad student with swine flu, school shuts down

Ghaziabad, November 05: The junior section of Delhi Public School Ghaziabad has been closed till Nov 13 after a case of swine flu was detected in the school, the principal said Thursday.

A Class 3 student was found positive for swine flu. A medical official G.K. Mishra confirmed that the student was suffering from the H1N1 infection.

Principal Rita Kapoor told IANS that the junior section would be closed till Nov 13 and the senior section till Nov 8.

Sibal hopeful on central status to Panjab University

Chandigarh, November 05: Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal Thursday told a delegation of students from Panjab University (PU) that he was hopeful of central status for the varsity but it was necessary to first convince the state government on the issue.

Presently, 60 per cent funding to PU is by central government while remaining is done by Punjab.

Scam-linked Chandigarh official transferred

Chandigarh, November 05: Chandigarh’s Director of Public Instructions (schools) Samwartak Singh, whose name cropped up in a teachers’ recruitment scam, was Thursday transferred from the education department with immediate effect, officials said.

The union territory’s Home Secretary Ram Niwas last week wrote to administrator S.F. Rodrigues, proposing the repatriation of Singh to his parent state, Haryana.

3 arrested for abducting, drowning minor

Ghaziabad, November 05: Three people have been arrested for abducting and murdering their 14-year-old relative, police said Thursday.

A fourteen-year-old boy was allegedly abducted from Murad Nagar and then drowned in the Ganga at Garhmukteswar area of Ghaziabad.

According to police, Harsh Tyagi, a Class 9 student, had gone to a market near his house in the evening Oct 29. He, however, did not return.

The next day, his father Umesh Tyagi lodged a missing complaint at Murad Nagar police station.

Hyderabad, November 05: GE Volunteers have helped set up a NASSCOM Knowledge Network (NKN) centre at Don Bosco School in Hyderabad. Over 260 centre strong, NKN Initiatives is run by NASSCOM Foundation to propagate information and communication technology (ICT) exposure and training among financially challenged communities and as a result help enhance their livelihoods. Hyderabad, November 05: Sachin Tendulkar, two weeks short of completing his two decades in international cricket, scored a brilliant 175 as he crossed his personal milestone of 17,000 ODI runs in the fourth One-Day International against Australia here Thursday.

Tendulkar crossed the 17,000-run mark while taking three runs off Ben Hilfenhaus in 4.6 overs. Tendulkar now has 17,168 runs from 435 matches since making his debut in 1989. The 175 against Australia here was Tendulkar’s 45th ODI century.

UAE was world’s top cast iron rods importer in 2008

Abu Dhabi, November 05: The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has imported cast iron rods worth $6.77 billion in 2008, a 237 percent increase over last year and 14 times more than the global growth rate of imports, WAM news agency reported.

Turkey was the UAE’s main source of cast iron rods in 2008, contributing 87 percent of supply. China came second at 12 percent, while the remaining one percent coming from other global sources, the foreign trade ministry said in a report Wednesday.

Sri Lanka steps up mine clearance

Colombo, November 05: The Sri Lankan government has stepped up clearing mines in former rebel-controlled areas aimed at resettling 159,000 war refugees before the end of January, Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama said Thursday.

He told Colombo-based diplomats that an estimated 1.5 million unexploded landmines remained in an area of 402 sq km.

Bogollagama said the government has recently imported the latest in de-mining machinery from Slovakia and Croatia and five more machines had also arrived to speed up the mine clearance.
