Delhi is partner state of IITF 2009

New Delhi, November 08: The national capital will be the partner state in this year’s India International Trade Fair (IITF), which will be held at the Pragati Maidan from November 14 to 27.

The 2010 Commonwealth Games, which the city will host, and the Services and the hospitality sector, for which the capital has become well-known, will dominate the Delhi Pavilion’s theme this year, Chetan Sanghi, Managing Director of Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (DSIIDC) said.

Lahiri breaks course record to lift BILT Open

Greater Noida, November 08: Anirban Lahiri broke the overall course record today as the Bangalore golfer lifted the BILT Open title with a staggering seven-stroke lead that also catapulted him to the top of the domestic Order of Merit.

Lahiri, who carded a one-under 71 in the final round, bagged the highest prize money ever on the Aircel-PGTI Tour, taking home Rs 16,16,500 at the Rs one crore event at the Jaypee Greens Golf Resort.

The 22-year-old ended the tournament with a total of 20-under 268, breaking Jyoti Randhawa’s record of 19-under 269 for 72 holes that was set last year.

Sangakkara hails Tendulkar as best player of modern era

Mumbai, November 08: Visiting Sri Lankan team skipper Kumar Sangakkara today lavished praise on Sachin Tendulkar, who would be completing 20 years in international cricket on November 15, calling the Indian the “greatest player of the modern era”.

“He (Tendulkar) has been brilliant. To have survived the tough test of public expectation in India is something, which should be commended. The runs (he has scored) are an added bonus. He’s probably the greatest player to play the game in the modern era and compares with the (Donald) Bradmans and all the legends of the past,” Sangakkara said.

Public support ‘crucial’ to Afghan success, says general

Kabul, November 08: Public support is “crucially important” to the success of mission in Afghanistan, the senior British commander in the country warned today, as the death toll among British troops rose to 231.

Lieutenant General Jim Dutton, the deputy commander of the international forces in Afghanistan, spoke out as the MoD announced the death of a soldier who died in a blast near Sangin, Helmand Province, yesterday, on the eve of Remembrance Sunday.

Shimla, November 08: The RSS is neither a political outfit nor a para-military force, but is an organisation engaged in unifying society on the basis of Hindutva, its chief Mohan Bhagwat said today.

“Though, we have our flag and some people from the RSS have joined political organisations, the Sangh has nothing to do with politics,” he said at a function here.

“The RSS is neither a political outfit nor a para-military force. Its primary function is to unify society on the basis of Hindutva,” Bhagwat told Sangh cadres.

Randhawa misses top-5 finish, ends tied 19th at WGC

Shanghai, November 08: A top five finish that seemed so imminent slipped through the fingers of a nervy Jyoti Randhawa, who signed off tied 19th with an even-par final round in the prestigious WGC-HSBC Champions golf tournament here today.

Nerves got the better of Randhawa, who blew off a good start to slip down the leaderboard, even though his exploit was good enough to finish ahead of the likes of Sergio Garcia (281) and Padraig Harrington (282) with a total of eight-under 280.

Husband sets wife on fire

Varanasi, November 08: A 25-year-old woman sustained serious burn injuries after her husband allegedly set her on fire at a village in Chandauli district.

The woman was admitted to Shiv Prasad Gupt divisional hospital here yesterday.

Police said that Soni, a native of Imliya area of Chandauli district, was married to Rakesh in 1998.

They have three children.

Rakesh was unemployed and addicted to liquor. Yesterday he had a tiff with his wife when she refused to give him money for liquor.

In a fit of anger Rakesh set her on fire after pouring kerosene on her.

Homeland chief warns against anti-Muslim backlash

Abu Dhabi (UAE), November 08: US Homeland Security officials are working with groups around United States to head off any possible anti-Muslim backlash following the shootings at Fort Hood in Texas, the agency’s chief said today.

The comments by Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano also appeared part of efforts to reassure the Arab world that US authorities were taking measures to quell anti-Islam sentiments after last week’s rampage by an American-born Muslim serving as US Army psychiatrist.

NC sold Kashmir for power: Geelani

Srinagar, November 08: Launching a scathing attack on the National Conference, separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani today accused the party of selling the interest of Kashmiris for clinging to power in the state.

National Conference founder Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah sold the interest of Kashmiris for the sake of power, he told a seminar organised by the Muslim League here.

This was the biggest act of “deceit” on the part of the NC leader, said the Chairman of the hardline faction of the Hurriyat Conference.

Maoists getting weapons from China: Home Secretary

New Delhi, November 08: Government today indicated that China may be a source of arms for Maoists with whom it is willing to have a dialogue but they should abjure violence.

“Chinese are big smugglers… suppliers of small arms. I am sure that the Maoists also get them,” Pillai said when asked if the Naxals were having links with China.

This is for the first time that someone high in the government has said that the Maoists are getting arms from China.

Prayers held for justice in anti-Sikh riot cases

Chandigarh, November 08: Special prayers were held at a Gurudwara in Patiala for speedy delivery of justice to victims of 1984 anti-Sikhs riots.

After prayers at Gurudwara Sri Dukhniwaran Sahib, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) chief Sukhbir Singh Badal said, “It was a matter of shame for world’s biggest democracy that even after 25 years, the families of victims were not granted justice”.

New Delhi, November 08: India today promised to work for a purposeful outcome on climate change at the Copenhagen Conference, but asked rich nations responsible for the damage in the first place to finance developing countries’ work on limiting carbon emissions.

“We will work with all like minded countries to promote a purposeful outcome of the Copenhagen Conference (from December 6-18),” Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said at the India Economic Summit attended by industry and business captains from around the world.

New Delhi, November 08: Barkha Dutt, a noted journalist and Group Editor of NDTV news channel, has won an internet domain dispute at the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) against a Hyderabad-based entity.

The Hyderabad-based cybersquatter–easyticket, Kapavarapu– has been using a domain name– ‘barkhadutt.com’ — which was registered on January 8, 2007.

Barkha Dutt approached Geneva-based WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Center in September, 2009, objecting the ownership of internet site ‘barkhadutt.com’ by easyticket.

Guwahati, November 08: Dejection writ large on his face after losing the ODI series to Australia, India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni said his team lost today’s do-or-die match in the first 15 minutes itself.

Dhoni’s gamble to bat first on a tricky track boomeranged and the match virtually slipped out of their hand by nine overs when the home side was gasping for breath at 27 for five.

“During the toss I said that the first half hour will be crucial for us but the first 15 minutes proved more than enough,” Dhoni said after the match.

Shahid won’t talk money

Accused moves HC, seeks another judge

Mumbai, November 08: Sabahuddin Ahmed, one of the three accused in the 26/11 terror attack case, has moved the Bombay High Court seeking replacement of special judge ML Tahaliyani, citing lack of faith in him and alleging unfairness.

Ahmed’s lawyer Ejaz Naqvi confirmed the development and said, “It is a hand-written application forwarded by Ahmed from inside the prison on October 29, of which the High Court is yet to take cognisance.”

Police yet to arrive at any conclusion

Hyderabad, November 08: Forty-eight hours after Anusha, the B.Com third-year student of Villa Marie college jumped to death in the college premises, the Punjagutta police are yet to arrive at a conclusion on whether the other four students drove her to end her life or was there any other reason.

Meanwhile, an organisation, Dalit Sthree Sakthi (DSS) has alleged that Anusha was being harassed on caste basis, after her friends came to know that she was a Dalit.

5 employees working on tracks run over by train

New Delhi, November 08: Just three days after six gangmen and six others were run over by trains in two different incidents at Pataudi and Ballabhgarh, four gangmen and a section engineer were run over by the Dehradun-New Delhi Jan Shatabdi on Saturday morning at Ghaziabad.

Section engineer Ramesh Kumar and the four gangmen, Ram Ratan, Puran, Ajay and Radheshyam were working on the tracks between Ghaziabad and Sahibabad stations when around 11.15 am the New Delhi-bound Jan Shatabdi, ignoring the flag indicating men at work, ran over the them.

16 killed in Nepal as bus falls from mountain

Kathmandu, November 08: At least 16 people were killed and more than two dozen injured Sunday when a passenger bus plunged off a mountain highway in western Nepal, police said.

The bus fell about 250 metres off the narrow highway in the Arghakhanchi district, about 350 kilometres west of Kathmandu.

Police said most of the victims died after being crushed inside the mangled remains of the bus.

Police officer Radhe Shyam Singh said 25 people were injured in the accident and half of them were in serious condition.

Naseeruddin Shah-starrer to open New York film fest

New York, November 08: Naseeruddin Shah-starrer “Today’s Special”, a comedy set in New York City, will open the Mahindra Indo-American Arts Council (MIAAC) Film Festival here on November 11 that will have 47 screenings including 44 premieres of features, documentaries and short films.

Now in its ninth year, the annual festival till November 15, will present veteran Shyam Benegal’s comic take on Indian politics “Well Done Abba” and Anurag Kashyap’s “Gulaal”.

Saudis take mountain from Yemen rebels

Riyadh, November 08: Saudi Arabian forces have taken control of a mountain straddling the border with Yemen and cleared it of Shiite rebels, in five days of fighting that saw three soldiers killed and 15 wounded, the assistant defense minister said on Sunday.

Prince Khaled bin Sultan said another four soldiers were missing and that Saudi troops were still dealing with rebel infiltrators in other spots along the frontier. Bin Sultan said Saudi forces had not entered northern Yemen nor commented on rebel casualties.

Midnapore (WB), November 08: Denying that West Bengal is a part of ‘Operation Green Hunt’, launched by the Centre to flush out Maoists, Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee said that development and the law and order situation in Lalgarh area has improved but needs to be enhanced further.

Three commit suicide

Vijayawada, November 08: A woman and her two daughters allegedly committed suicide by consuming pesticides at Vuyyuru town in Krishna District last night.

Police said the deceased were identified as B Venkateswarai (43), her daughters Sukanya (24) and Bhanusri (22). According to the parents of Venkateswarai, they took the extreme step due to alleged harassment by her husband.

The bodies were sent to Government Hospital, Vuyyur.
