Taiwan launches world’s first anti-swine flu spray

Taipei, October 02: A Taiwan company Thursday launched what it called the world’s first spray capable of destroying the swine flu virus.

VirusBom costs 350 Taiwan dollars ($10) and can be used 700 times, Money Marketing Communication representative said. It contains a chemical compound that can destroy many kinds of bacteria and viruses, including the H1N1 swine flu strain, company representative Heidi Wang said.

India will be a ‘deal-maker’, says Jairam Ramesh

Washington, October 02: Seeking a fair and equitable agreement at the key climate talks at Copenhagen, India has insisted that it would be a deal-maker and “not a deal-breaker” at the December meet aimed at tackling the pressing issue of global warming.

“I can assure you that India would not be a deal-breaker. It will be a deal-maker at Copenhagen,” Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh said on Thursday evening at a reception called ’Lighting a Billion Lives’ organised by ‘The Energy and Resources Institute’ (TERI).

Taliban Says,Mulla Umar Not In Pakistan

Chaman, October 02: Afghan Taliban leader, Mullah Mohammad Omar is in Pakistan and the United States is saying it is only there to justify an extension of its drone missile attack, a Taliban commander said Wednesday.

A U.S. newspaper said this week U.S. officials have expressed concern about the ability of Omar and his lieutenants to launch attacks into Afghanistan from sanctuaries in the Pakistani city of Quetta.

Pakistan has always denied that Omar or any of its commanders are based in Pakistan, but failed to dispel suspicions in Washington and Kabul.

Today’s babies could live to 22nd century: Study

Paris, October 02: More than half of the babies born these days in rich countries will live to 100 years if current trends of life expectancy continue, a study appearing in the medical journal The Lancet said Friday.

In the 20th century, most developed countries saw an increase of around 30 years in life expectancy, according to the paper led by Kaare Christensen, a professor at the Danish Ageing Research Centre at the University of Southern Denmark.

Swine flu could overload US hospitals: Report

Chicago, October 02: Fifteen states could run out of hospital beds and 12 more could fill 75 percent of their beds with swine flu sufferers if 35 percent of Americans catch the virus in coming weeks, a report released on Thursday said.

The study, based on estimates from a computer model developed by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, shows the strain hospitals and health departments could face as a second wave of swine flu surges.

Jaipur, October 02: Congress president Sonia Gandhi will address a public meeting in Nagaur district of Rajasthan today to mark the golden jubilee of launch of Panchayti Raj.

She will arrive in Nagaur, 287 km from the state capital, in the afternoon and address a gathering on the occasion of 50 years of Panchayti Raj, which was launched in the district on October 2, 1959 by first Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru, officials said.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, Union Minister C P Joshi and state Cabinet ministers will also participate in the function, they said.

Mumbai, October 02: Bollywood actor Neil Nitin Mukesh has revealed that his singer father Nitin Mukesh was upset with him for having debuted with a negative role in “Johnny Gaddaar”.

“My dad did not speak to me for six months because I signed `Johnny Gaddaar`. He was so mad at me that he wouldn`t even speak to me when eating meals,” Neil told Farah Khan on a chat show.

Recipe: Palak Paneer

Enjoy this simple Indian food recipe in your main course meal.

Ingredients:

• 1/2 kg Spinach
• 200 gm Paneer
• 1 Onion
• 1/4 tsp Black pepper powder
• 3/4 tsp Ginger-garlic paste
• 1/2 tsp Green chilli paste
• 3 tbsp Butter
• 2-3 Bay Leaves
• 1 tsp Cumin Seeds
• 1 tsp Garam Masala Powder
• Vegetable oil
• Salt to taste

Procedure:

Mix green chilli paste and ginger-garlic paste with spinach. Add little water.
Pressure-cook the above mixture for 10 minutes. Remove before the first whistle.

“For the sake of making a serial, the makers cannot exploit and harass the children,” Tirath told reporters here today when told that some NGOs have complained to the ministry about the reality show being shown on a popular TV channel.

Andhra Pradesh allowed to offer engineering courses in evening shift

New Delhi, October 02: The Supreme Court today paved the way for the Andhra Pradesh government to run the evening shift of three-year engineering diploma courses, putting aside objections from private colleges.

A bench of Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan, Justice P. Sathasivam and Justice B.S. Chauhan, suspended the Andhra Pradesh High Court’s Aug 18 order, which had halted the admission process for the evening shift of diploma courses in the state’s polytechnics and engineering colleges.

Iraq success required US manpower: Commander

Gaza, October 02: Gaining the upper hand against Al-Qaeda in Iraq has required a big US military force coupled with manhunts against militant leaders, the American commander there said on Thursday.

“You have to have both combined,” General Ray Odierno, the commander of US forces in Iraq, told a news conference.

He said success against the Iraqi branch of Al-Qaeda could not have been achieved solely with a “counter-terrorism” approach — using a smaller elite force targeting key enemy leaders.

Submarines ordered by Israel still being built

Jerusalem, October 02: Israel has not been delivered two German submarines as the military had previously reported, with the two subs still under construction, the military said on Thursday.

“These submarines are still under construction and have not yet been delivered to the Israeli navy,” a statement said.

A military spokesman had said Tuesday that Israel had taken delivery of two German Dolphin-class submarines, called U212s, ordered four years ago.

Israel currently has three German submarines.

US bill targets companies selling gasoline to Iran

Tehran, October 02: The US House of Representatives approved Thursday legislation that would sanction foreign companies that sell gasoline to Iran, as talks on the country’s nuclear program were underway in Geneva.

The bill would prevent companies that sell gasoline to Iran from holding contracts with the US Energy Department to supply the US Strategic Petroleum Reserve.

The ban, adopted as part of the 2010 energy budget, affects companies that have gasoline contracts with Iran that are worth more than one million dollars.

Impostor Held for Dh600,000 Robbery

Dubai, October 02: The Dubai Police has arrested a man for allegedly impersonating a police officer and stealing Dh600,000 from an employee of a shop, said a senior police officer.

The police said a 30-year-old Bangladeshi employee was at the shop office in Naif when an Emirati, posing as a police officer, approached him late in the evening of September 26.

The man did not present any identity card but made the employee give him a bag containing Dh600,000.
