Wipro eyeing acquisitions, govt projects for growth

New Delhi, October 02: Against the backdrop of a spate of recent acquisitions by international technology companies like Dell and Xerox, Indian IT major Wipro on Friday said it is looking at acquisitions to fuel growth.

“We are selectively looking at acquisitions…it will be a string of smaller ones,” Wipro Chairman Azim Premji told reporters on the sidelines of a conference here.

He, however, declined to divulge further details saying, “It is premature to talk of them.”

Govt examining IPO price band

New Delhi, October 02: The government is talking to market regulator SEBI for evolving guidelines for price band for public offers by India Inc to make the process transparent and ensure funds are not diverted.

Asked what steps government could take to prevent companies from fixing arbitrarily IPO price band at a very high level, Corporate Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid told a news agency, “We are examining it, some very good people with experience of capital market are helping us on this.

Pakistan favourites, says Yousuf

Johannesburg, October 02: Experienced Pakistani batsman Mohammad Yousuf has said his team will start favourites against New Zealand in the Champions Trophy semi-final here tomorrow.

“We have fought and played well in all of our three games so far. The entire team gave a good performance and our morale is high. I think we are favourites in the semi-final. I hope we win this match,” Yousuf said yesterday.

Explosion in Srinagar, one injured

Srinagar, October 02: One person was injured Friday in a blast in this Jammu and Kashmir summer capital.

The low intensity blast took place in Srinagar’s Malabagh locality, 10 km from the city centre Lal Chowk, injuring a municipality sweeper. Bashir Ahmed was taken to hospital for treatment.

Former chief minister and opposition Peoples Democratic Party patron Mufti Muhammad Sayeed and other politicians are scheduled to attend a marriage in a house near the blast site.

1 kg Fish
1 large Onion, chopped
1 pod Garlic, peeled
8 Green Chillies, chopped
1 inch piece Ginger, chopped
1/2 tsp Garam Masala
2 tsp Coriander powder
3/4 cup Yogurt
100 gms Oil
Salt to taste
2 tsp Fish Masala
1 Onion, cut into rings
1 Lemon, cut into wedges

Ingredients for Fish Masala
1 tsp Black salt
1 tsp Ajwain seeds
1/2 tsp Peppercorns
1 tbsp Cumin seeds
1 tbsp Pomegranate seeds

To make Fish Masala
1. Pound or grind all the ingredients, sieve and store in an airtight bootle.

Method:
1. Wash and clean the fish and cut into 1 1/2 inch pieces.

Confident Pakistan take on injury-hit New Zealand

Johannesburg, October 02: Their second successive ICC title in sight, a confident Pakistan will take on an injury-ravaged but spirited New Zealand in the second semifinal of the ICC Champions Trophy here tomorrow.

Pakistan, the reigning Twenty20 world champions, defeated West Indies and India before losing a last-ball thriller to Australia to qualify second from group A.

New Zealand, on the other hand, lost to South Africa before pulling off sensational wins over Sri Lanka and England to top group B.

Water tanker runs over two guards

Hyderabad, October 02: Two security guards, hailing from Assam, were crushed to death by a water tanker at Bachupally on the outskirts of the city on Wednesday morning. The duo, Naren Borah and Vipul Kumar, both aged 19, were working as security guards at the Chaitanya Junior College for Girls, a kilometre away from Bachupally.

Panchayat Raj official has assets worth a crore

Hyderabad, October 02: The assistant commissioner of Panchayat Raj and Rural Development Department in the city was found to be in possession of assets worth more than Rs 1 crore by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB).

ACB sleuths conducted raids on the office of assistant commissioner E Krishna Mohan, situated on Urdu Lane in Himayathnagar and on his residence at Bhagyanagar Society in Kukatpally on Thursday.

Krishna Mohan has a house at Hayathnagar, two flats at Kukatpally and three house plots, one at Champapet and two at Uppal.

Further delay in Hyderabad Metro Rail project

Hyderabad, October 02: As expected, the State Government has extended the due to date for receipt of Request for Qualification (RFQ) applications
for the Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMR) project by another month.

The one-month extension from October 3 to November 2 was given on the basis of representations from some of the firms which purchased the pre-qualification documents for the much delayed Hyderabad Metro Rail project.

Billionaire Cirque du Soleil founder Guy Laliberte is the seventh paying space tourist to visit the orbital station. The 50-year-old dubbed the first clown in space spent a reported $35 million for his voyage.

His children and partner Claudia Barilla broke into applause after watching the docking Friday on a giant screen at Russian mission control outside Moscow.

Aussie University starts research centre in city

Hyderabad, October 02: In what appears to be an alternative for brain drain, Australia-based Deakin University has opened its Deakin India Research Initiative

(DIRI) here on Thursday. Victoria’s Minister for Skills and Workforce Jacinta Allen has formally opened the DIRI, which is the first university in the world to set up an office in India.

With the DIRI, the University intends to conduct research in material sciences, nanotechnology and biotechnology with some of India’s leading companies, research institutes and universities.

US missile said to kill a top militant: Pakistan

Islamabad, October 02: The al Qaeda-linked leader of the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan is believed to have been killed by a US missile strike in Pakistan’s northwest, intelligence officials said on Friday. The Taliban denied the claim.

Tahir Yuldash’s death would be a significant blow to the militant groups that have wreaked havoc along the Afghan-Pakistan border and the latest victory for the covert American missile program.

ISI chief visits US, discusses Pak-Afghan region

Islamabad, October 02: ISI chief Lt Gen Ahmed Shuja Pasha discussed the situation in Pakistan and Afghanistan with top security officials in the US and apprised them of Pakistan’s views about the new American strategy for the region.

Pasha, currently on a visit to the US, met CIA director Leon Panetta, President Barack Obama’s National Security Adviser Gen James L Jones and National Intelligence Chief Dennis Blair, diplomatic sources were quoted as saying by ‘Dawn’ newspaper today.

Airman killed in Afghanistan blast

London, October 02: An airman has died in an explosion in southern Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence announced on Friday.

The death of the member of 34 Squadron Royal Air Force Regiment brings the total number of troops who have died since operations against Taliban extremists began in 2001 to 219.

“The airman was killed as a result of an explosion that happened whilst on a force protection patrol near to Camp Bastion in central Helmand province, on the afternoon of October 1, 2009,” the ministry said in a statement.

US congratulates China but critics abound

Washington, October 02: The United States congratulated China as it celebrated 60 years of communist rule, but criticism was not far behind with Congress urging Beijing to free a prominent dissident.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton sent a congratulatory message to China, where thousands of troops marched to Tiananmen Square in an elaborate display of patriotism showcasing the emerging power’s rise.

Hillary in a statement extended “warm wishes and congratulations” to China and noted that 2009 also marked 30 years since the United States recognised Beijing.

Tegucigalpa, October 02: A US Senator and three congressmen plan to meet on Friday with Honduras’ interim leader in defiance of official Washington policy barring contact with the architects of the military coup that ousted the nation’s president.

South Carolina Senator Jim DeMint intends to meet with interim president Roberto Micheletti as well as members of the Central American nation’s Supreme Court, election officials and business and civic leaders during the fact-finding trip, said Wesley Denton, a spokesman for the Senator.

Spanish boat attacked by pirates in Indian Ocean

Madrid, October 02: Pirates attacked a Spanish tuna trawler on Friday in the Indian Ocean and contact with the vessel has been lost, the ship’s owner said.

Echebastar Fleet, based in Spain’s Basque region, said the ship Alakrana was carrying a crew of 36.

The ship sent out distress signals advising of a pirate attack and since then the company has not been able to communicate with Alakrana, the company said.

The Defence Ministry said it had no immediate information. Spanish military forces are taking part in an EU anti-piracy flotilla deployed in the Indian Ocean.

Moodie seizes early lead at Navistar Classic

Montgomery, October 02: Scotland’s Janice Moodie made birdie on a half dozen of her final seven holes en route to an eight-under par 64 and a one-stroke lead after the opening round of the LPGA’s Navistar Classic.

Just behind Moodie is 14-year-old Alexis Thompson while world number one Lorena Ochoa, France’s Karen Icher and American Michelle Wie are two strokes behind Moodie.

The 36-year-old Moodie began at the No. 10 hole and got off to a quick start with a birdie on the 12th. She is a two-time winner on the LPGA Tour.

Andhra flood situation grim, toll rises to 26

Hyderabad, October 02: The flood situation in Andhra Pradesh turned more grim Friday as the death toll rose to 26, hundreds of people were trapped in flood waters and thousands more were rendered homeless.

The state government has sought help from the army for rescue and relief operations, especially in Kurnool district where Kurnool and Mantralayam towns are marooned. Kurnool town is about 250 km from state capital Hyderabad.

Terrorists in Britain to report travel plans

London, October 02: Convicted terrorists in Britain will have to notify authorities of where they live and changes of address as well as report any foreign travel plans.

Individuals found guilty of terrorism and terror-related offences will be subjected to notification requirements and foreign travel regulations similar to those that apply to sex offenders, Policing and Security Minister David Hanson said.

The measures, which came into effect on Thursday, apply to convicted terrorists who have served a year or more in prison.
