Watson helps Australia to win Champions Trophy

Centurion, October 06: Shane Watson hit a marvellous unbeaten century to guide defending champions Australia to a six-wicket victory over New Zealand in the final of the Champions Trophy at the SuperSport Park here Monday.

Chasing a target of 201, Man of the Match Watson remained not out on 105, his second consecutive century, as Australia shrugged off a shaky start and made 206 for four in 45.2 overs. Australia also became the first team to retain the trophy.

Honduran government repeals restrictions on freedom

Washington, October 06: The de facto government of Honduras Monday repealed a controversial decree that had restricted freedom of movement and freedom of expression in the country in the wake of the return of ousted President Manuel Zelaya last month.

Hours earlier, in Washington, Zelaya had issued a statement asking the de facto government to end repression and restore “unrestricted” freedom of expression as signs it is serious about dialogue to end the country’s political stalemate.

Noble Prize for medicine shared by three

New York, October 05: Two women and a man, Elizabeth H. Blackburn, Carol W. Greider and Jack W. Szostak shared the Noble Prize in medicine for their pioneering work in chromosomal studies which revealed how chromosomes protect themselves as cells divide, work that has inspired experimental cancer therapies and may offer insights into aging.

According to reports, Blackburn, 60, who holds the dual U.S. and Australian citizenship, is a professor of biology and physiology at the University of California, San Francisco.

Senator John Ensign being asked to resign

Nevada, October 05: Nevada Senator John Ensign who had an affair with a former campaign staffer is being asked to resign, by all and sundry. This plea was even taken up by the host of a Las Vegas talk radio show.

KXNT 840 host Alan Stock, host of “The Morning Source,” which airs before Rush Limbaugh, told listeners this morning Ensign should step down, the station reports.

2 arrested in USF Lockout case

Florida, October 05: Two suspects were arrested in the USF lockout case. One suspect who was dressed in a green and yellow shirt was arrested in the afternoon by the police authorities.

Another suspect who was described in a text message as “White male subject seen in the Cooper Hall area in black tank top, cowboy hat carrying black puppy and a large hunting knife-officers in route.” was being hunted for by the police.

Gold prices decline silver moved up

Mumbai, October 05: Gold prices declined on the bullion market here on emergency of selling by stockists at higher levels.

Silver moved up on good industrial demand. Meanwhile in Tokyo, gold stayed above the $1,000 an ounce as the dollar remained pressured after last week’s jobs data pushed the currency down broadly on concerns the US economy recovery may not be as robust as expected earlier.

Spot gold inched up 0.2% to $1,003.55 an ounce in early trade.

‘Poor bowling responsible for India’s CT debacle’

Jalandhar, October 05: Poor bowling and bad luck were the reasons why India crashed out early from the Champions Trophy, feels team manager Anurag Thakur.

“Indian bowlers did not bowl up to their potential and ultimately we lost to Pakistan,” Thakur, who is also a BJP MP from Hamirpur in Himachal Pradesh, told reporters.

“Overall the Indian team performed well, which is evident from the win against West Indies, but defeat against Pakistan ultimately proved costly and we found ourselves out of the tournament,” Thakur said.

ElBaradei praises Iran nuclear cooperation

Tehran, October 05: Iran said on Monday that the chief of the UN atomic watchdog Mohamed ElBaradei was full of praise for Tehran’s “cooperation” over its nuclear programme during his weekend visit to Tehran.

Foreign ministry spokesman Hassan Ghashghavi also reiterated at a media conference that the programme was peaceful in purpose.

“ElBaradei praised Iran’s cooperation,” Ghashghavi said.

Arab governments back Yemen against rebels

Sanaa, October 05: Arab governments moved on Sunday to support Sanaa in its bid to crush rebels in northern Yemen, while clashes broke out in the southern city of Dhaleh over the detention of southerners viewed by the authorities as secessionists.

Dozens of people have been killed in the latest confrontations with security forces over the past six months — in the south since April, and in the north since August when Sanaa launched a crackdown on Zaidi Shiite rebels.

Wide condemnation over UN Gaza report delay

Gaza City, October 05: The prime minister of the democratically elected Hamas government in Gaza on Sunday slammed as “reckless and irresponsible” the decision by the UN Human Rights Council to postpone consideration of a damning report into the Gaza war.

Ismail Haniya blamed the Palestinian Authority for the decision to delay a vote on the report by the former international war crimes prosecutor Richard Goldstone.

The report accused both Israel and Palestinian resistance of committing war crimes during the three-week conflict at the turn of the year.

Patna, October 05: LJP president Ramvilas Paswan today justified the transfer of SP and Sub-Divisional Police Officer following the Khagaria carnage in which 16 people were killed, but asked Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to explain why didn’t he visit the carnage-site so far.

“Kumar suspended the SP and SDPO of Khagaria for reaching the carnage-site late…We welcome it,” Paswan told reporters.

“But who will suspend Kumar on the charge of not visiting Khagaria even three days after the carnage,” he remarked sarcastically.

Ambala, October 05: Senior BJP leader L K Advani today accused Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s government of failing to tackle terrorism and take up the issue with Pakistan in a proper manner.

At a public meeting at here campaigning for party candidate for Haryana assembly polls Anil Vij, Advani alleged the Centre had failed to tackle terror and the country was paying a “heavy price” for it.

Incidents of terrorism had increased under the present government and the Prime Minister has failed to take up the issue with Pakistan in a proper way, Advani charged.

UAE jails Syrian ex-spy, witness in Hariri probe

Abu dhabi, October 05: A Syrian former spy who was a prosecution witness in the inquiry into the assassination of Lebanon’s ex-premier Rafiq Hariri was on Monday given six months in jail and deportation for entering the UAE on a forged Czech passport.

The Supreme State Security Court in Abu Dhabi pronounced its verdict, which cannot be appealed, in the presence of defendant Mohammed Zuhair Siddiq, a former member of Syria’s intelligence services.

Hyderabad, October 05: Physicians from Andhra Pradesh practising in North America have announced an aid of $10,000 for relief operations in the flood-hit areas in the state.

Andhra Physicians of North America (APNA) has announced the aid for flood relief, according to state Minister for Roads and Buildings G.Aruna Kumari, who is currently visiting the United States.

APNA responded to the minister’s appeal to Indian Americans hailing from Andhra Pradesh to contribute generously for flood relief, a statement issued here said.

Politics drag Kuwait behind Gulf partners

Kuwait City, October 05: Political volatility means Kuwait lags behind most of its energy-rich Gulf peers, but the emirate is still on track to post the largest surplus in the region, Bank of America Merrill Lynch said on Monday.

“The lack of political determination for (economic) diversification has caused Kuwait to lag behind most of its GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) neighbours,” the bank said in its quarterly report on the region.

“The volatile political cycle and populist policies have also been a drag,” it said.

27-year-old woman becomes Delhi’s 15th swine flu victim

New Delhi, October 05:A 27-year-old woman succumbed to influenza A (H1N1) Monday taking the toll in Delhi to 15, the state Health Minister Kiran Walia said.

The patient died at the Safdarjung Hospital. She was suffering from rheumatic heart diseases and had undergone treatment at the Escort Heart Institute before being shifted to the Safdarjung Hospital.

Besides, the capital city reported 27 fresh cases taking the total number of infections so far to 2,920. However, around 90 percent of them have been cured completely. Of the fresh cases, 15 are children.
