London, October 06: Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood’s wife Jo has forgiven him for walking out of their marriage for a girl more than half her age, and says she now wants her husband back.

Jo, 54, claimed she will “always care” for Ronnie and has asked her children to reconcile with him, reports dailymail.co.uk.

Timberlake is single

London, October 06: US pop star Justin Timberlake has broken up with girlfriend Jessica Biel and is now single.

Timberlake’s family believes he was never committed fully to the relationship with Biel, reports dailymail.co.uk.

“As far as we’re concerned, he’s always been single. The girlfriends come and go, but we believe nothing has ever been serious,” Timberlake’s grandmother told a magazine.

New technique may clean contaminated soil quickly

Sydney, October 06: Scientists in Denmark have found a powerful new technique to rid soil of toxic heavy metals faster and more efficiently than current methods.

“Our aim was to speed up the established process for removing metals like lead and cadmium from soil using electrokinetic methods to protect community health and safety,” says Lisbeth Ottossen of the Technical University of Denmark, who led the study.

Mumbai, October 06: As far as calling names goes, campaigning for the October 13 Maharashtra Assembly elections seems to have reached a new low, with key players in state political arena calling rivals names, including those of animals.

Chief Minister Ashok Chavan called MNS chief Raj Thackeray, a ‘frog’.

“Raj Thackeray and other opponents are like frogs which appear on ground during the monsoon and start croaking,” Chavan said during a press conference in his hometown Nanded recently.

Pratibha Patil to visit LoC

Jammu, October 06: President Pratibha Patil will visit forward positions of the Indian Army along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir Friday, an official said Tuesday.

“She is visiting (LoC) to boost the morale of the soldiers guarding the most challenging terrain,” an army official told IANS.

Patil would visit the forward posts in Rajouri district, which of late has seen attempts by terrorists in Pakistan to infiltrate into Jammu and Kashmir.

PM calls for policy on food processing

New Delhi, October 06: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Tuesday called for a national food processing policy for the rapid growth of the sector.

“The policy to be effective will have to be comprehensive and adopt a number of legislative, administrative and promotional measures,” the prime minister said while inaugurating the first conference of state ministers of food processing industries here.

Syria cancels Palestinian leader’s visit

Syria, October 06: Syria has postponed a planned visit by the Palestinian President amid controversy about his decision to suspend efforts to have Israeli officials prosecuted for war crimes over last winter’s military offensive in Gaza.

A Syrian official refused to specify the exact reason for postponing Mahmoud Abbas’s trip, which was scheduled to begin today. Yesterday’s decision came a day after Syria criticised Mr Abbas’s Palestinian Authority for backing down against Israel.

Dhaka to spend $1.6 bn to dredge 53 rivers

Dhaka, October 06: Bangladesh’s Planning Commission has approved a $1.69 billion mega plan to dredge 53 of its major waterways over the next eight years and has invited investment proposals to implement it.

Rivers around the national capital will get priority in the plan that envisages dredging 237 million cubic meter in 53 waterways, parliament was informed, The Daily Star reported Tuesday.

Work would begin with dredging in the Balu and Turag rivers in the current fiscal year at a cost of $7.6 million.

EU alarmed over attack on UN office in Pakistan

Brussels, October 06: Stating that it “was utterly unacceptable” that a UN agency had been made a terror target, the European Union has asked Pakistan to “swiftly apprehend” those behind the suicide bombing at the World Food Programme (WFP) office in Islamabad.

Strongly condemning the suicide bombing of the WFP headquarters in the Pakistani capital Tuesday, an EU presidency statement called on the government of Pakistan to take all necessary steps to “swiftly apprehend the culprits behind this heinous crime and bring them to justice”, EuAsiaNews reported.

Maoists kill abducted police officer

Ranchi, October 06: Police officer Francis Enduwar, abducted by Maoists five days ago, has been killed in Jharkhand, a senior police official said Tuesday.

The Maoists had demanded that three of their leaders, including Kobad Ghandy, be released in exchange for Enduwar.

The news of Enduwar’s killing was confirmed by Jharkhand Deputy Inspector General R.K. Malik, who said his body was found on the Jamshedpur-Ranchi highway around 9 a.m.

A cancer survivor, she is ‘Mai’ to 80 children

Lucknow, October 06: She had a loving husband and caring in-laws, but Uttar Pradesh resident Beena Rana was devastated on being told she had uterus cancer and could never bear a child. That was 20 years ago.

Since then she has not only fought off the disease but also has a brood of 80 children who fondly call her “Mai”.

They are all destitute, orphaned or physically challenged kids who have found a home in the shelter run by Rana and her husband Virendra Kumar in Muzaffarnagar district, some 350 km from Lucknow.

Three hideouts busted in JK

Jammu, October 06: Three hideouts were busted by the security forces in different places of Jammu and Kashmir, police said here today.

Acting on a tip off, troops and police launched a search operation in Samba district’s Mansar forest belt and busted the hideout early this morning and recovered four kgs of RDX, 105 pistol rounds, one pistol among other things, they said.

Assam village limps back to normal after militant attack

Obama to meet Dalai Lama only after return from China

Washington, October 06: The US has confirmed that President Barack Obama will not meet with the Dalai Lama during his visit to Washington and will see the Tibetan spiritual leader only after his own trip to China next month.

“The president has decided that he will meet with the Dalai Lama at a mutually agreeable time. I think that there was an announcement that it would be after his trip to China,” State Department spokesman Ian Kelly told reporters Monday.

Karnataka swine flu toll rises to 100

Bangalore, October 06: The swine flu toll in Karnataka has touched 100 after one more person succumbed to the HIN1 virus, a health official said here Tuesday.

The latest victim of swine flu was a 31-year-old woman who died at a private hospital in Bangalore Oct 2. She was under observation at the hospital since Sep 15.

The report confirming that she tested positive for the virus was, however, received Oct 5, a health official said.

Out of the 100 swine flu death reports in Karnataka, 67 were registered in Bangalore and the rest from other parts of the state.

Indo-American Education Summit next month

New Delhi, October 06: In a move aimed at enhancing collaboration in the field of education, an Indo-American Education Summit will be held here, Bangalore and Hyderabad next month.

The Summit would be attended by representatives from around 35 top American Universities to explore the areas of collaboration with Indian institutions and organisations, according to a spokesman of New Jersey-based Indus Foundation which is organising the Summit.

The first summit will be held in the Capital on November eight.

Sensex gains 112 pts in opening trade on global cues

Mumbai, October 06: The Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark Sensex today rose by over 112 points in opening trade on Tuesday as foreign funds pumped in fresh funds after firming global trends.

The 30-share index rose by 112.65 points, or 0.66 percent, to 16,979.06 points with metal, IT and FMCG sector stocks leading the gains. The BSE barometer had lost 268.14 points in yesterday’s session.

The wide-based National Stock Exchange index Nifty moved up by 30.70 points to trade higher at 5,033.90.

Pietersen admits to contract doubts

Incentives on anvil to prompt cos to get listed: Khurshid

New Delhi, October 06: The government on Monday said it was looking at ways to provide incentives to companies to encourage them to get listed on the stock exchanges.

Incentives and disincentives for companies, who get listed, would be examined from time to time in consultation with the market regulator Sebi, he added.

“Sebi is leading the charge in this, but we will obviously be there to help them and follow with them,” he said.

The Minister had earlier said a drive would be launched to encourage firms to get listed on bourses by educating them about the advantages of going public.

Gulf in talks on replacing dollar for oil trading: Report

Sydney, October 06: Britain’s The Independent newspaper on Tuesday reported that Gulf Arab states were in secret talks with Russia, China, Japan and France to replace the US dollar with a basket of currencies in the trading of oil.

The US dollar eased after the report, written by Middle East correspondent Robert Fisk and monitored on The Independent’s Web site. It cited unidentified sources in Gulf Arab states and Chinese banking sources in Hong Kong.

Unemployment to peak in 8-12 months: IMF chief

Istanbul, October 06: World unemployment will not peak for at least another eight to 12 months at least as the economic recovery takes root, the head of the International Monetary Fund said.

For all countries “it will take from now on at least eight to 12 months before unemployment will decrease,” IMF managing director Dominique Strauss-Kahn said at a news conference on the eve of IMF and World Bank meetings in Istanbul.

In advanced countries the peak could occur in 10 to 12 months, Strauss-Kahn said.

US service sector grows for first time in a year

New York, October 06: The US service sector grew in September for the first time in more than a year, creating jobs in banking and restaurants and giving a fresh sign that the economy is healing after doubts cast by recent poor data.

The Institute for Supply Management’s (ISM) services index rose on Monday to 50.9 last month, beating expectations of 50.0, the dividing line between growth and contraction.

people of the city of Vijayawada clung to a faint hope on Monday.

The death toll in heavy rains and devastating floods in the state rose to 52. Krishna was angry as a record of 11.03 lakh PCPs flood water reached Prakasam barrage. However, there was no threat to human lives as 2.5 lakh people of Krishna and Guntur districts have already been moved to relief camps.
