Five US soldiers killed in Afghanistan: NATO

Kabul, September 25: Insurgents killed another five US soldiers in Afghanistan’s southern Taliban stronghold, NATO said Friday, with their commander poised to request more troops to avoid failure in the eight-year war.

Two soldiers were killed outright and three later died of their injuries in a trio of separate incidents on Thursday, the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said Friday.

Dikshit launches web portal on diabetes awareness

New Delhi, September 25: Delhi Chief Minister Shiela Dikshit Friday launched a web portal giving “complete information” on constraints of and treatment for diabetes.

The site – www.ddrc.in – was launched by the Delhi Diabetic Research Centre (DDRC) following a study undertaken by the centre on diabetes and its link to depression.

Dikshit reiterated the government’s commitment towards tackling diabetes and hailed the portal as a “complete information platform for people with diabetes to enable them to lead happy and healthy lives”.

Shiney Ahuja faints in court

Mumbai, September 25:Shiney Ahuja, arrested for allegedly raping his maid, fainted in court today while he was there for the framing of charges against him. The next hearing is now on October 7.

Shiney had on Wednesday told the Mumbai High Court that the medical report and DNA tests do not support the rape charges.

After sessions court rejected his bail application two months ago, the actor has now moved the High Court. The investigation in the case is over and his custody is no longer required, the application said.

Shiney is in jail since June 15 this year

New Delhi, September 25: Sons and daughters from leading political families have entered the electoral fray in Maharashtra with 20-odd such candidates having filed their nominations for the October 13 assembly polls.

Prominent among them are Rajendra Shekhawat, son of President Pratibha Patil, Praniti daughter of Union Minister Sushilkumar Shinde, Amit, son of another Union Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, and Poonam, daughter of the late BJP leader Pramod Mahajan.

Today was the last date for filing of nomination papers.

IAF strengthening air defence radars along LAC with China

New Delhi, September 25: The Indian Air Force (IAF) is strengthening its air defence in Ladakh along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China by putting in place a series of special mountain and light-weight radars.

Western Air Command (WAC) chief Air Marshal N A K Browne told reporters here today that different types of radars would be put in place along the 667-km LAC with China, the air defence of which is WAC’s responsibility.

No hike in interest rates on cards, says SBI chief

New Delhi, September 25: State Bank of India Chairman O P Bhatt said today no increase in interest rates is expected in the near future, allaying apprehensions on the return of the tight money policy.

“Hike is extremely unlikely,” Bhatt told PTI when asked whether the rates of borrowing could be revised upward in the next few months.

He said the SBI was lending at the “lowest rates” and any more cut was not on the cards.

ICL players to play for KKR in practice matches

Kolkata, September 25: In a bid to earn a contract with the Kolkata Knight Riders, former Indian Cricket League players Deep Dasgupta, Rohan Gavaskar and G Vignesh will play for the IPL side in their practice matches against visiting Champions League Twenty20 teams in Gurgaon from October 1-7.

Multi-crore Hawala racket unearthed in Delhi

New Delhi, September 25: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Friday unearthed one of the largest Hawala money-laundering networks in the world after conducting raids at eight locations around Delhi.

The kingpin behind the entire racket has been identified as Naresh Jain, whose house was raided in Delhi. His Hawala racket running into thousands of crores of rupees was spread across India and many countries in the world including UAE, China, Nigeria, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Italy and Bolivia.

Sensex dips 88 points on weak global cues

Mumbai, September 25: The Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark Sensex today fell by 88 points as investors turned cautious ahead of a long weekend amid weak global trends.

The 30-share barometer settled at 16,613.22 points, a loss of 88.43 points over the previous close.

The wide-based National Stock Exchange index Nifty fell by 27.60 points to 4,958.95 points.

Brokers said investors were reluctant to enlarge their positions ahead of a long weekend as the market is closed on Monday for ‘Dussehra’ festival.

US-EU should expand its ties with India, China: Barroso

Pittsburgh, September 25: The European Commission on Thursday said there is a need to make US-EU relationship more outward-looking by expanding its ties with countries like India, China, Brazil and Russia.

‘Santhanam’s views on nuke test are a clincher’

Mumbai, September 25: In the midst of the controversy over the success of the 1998 thermonuclear test, nuclear scientist P K Iyengar has said the views of former DRDO scientist K Santhanam on the issue are the “clincher”.

There is a “strong reason to believe that the thermonuclear device had not fully burnt and, therefore, further testing was called for,” Iyengar, a former Atomic Energy Commission Chairman, said in a statement yesterday.

NRI Congress leaders, D L Kalhan and Sunil Chopra, have been elected President and General Secretary respectively of the Indian Overseas Congress, UK.

Kalhan, hitherto General Secretary of the organisation succeeds freedom fighter Balwant Kapoor, who died recently following a heart attack, aged 81.

BJP welcomes govt stand on CTBT, NPT

New Delhi, September 25: In the wake of US President Barack Obama’s statement alluding that India should sign the CTBT and NPT, BJP on Friday welcomed the government’s firm stand against it.

“BJP is of the clear view that India should not sign the CTBT or NPT under any circumstances. We have, on our own, imposed voluntary moratorium and no-first-use policy on ourselves,” BJP President Rajnath Singh said.

Singh said, “We welcome the stand (of not signing the two treaties) taken by the Indian government in the United Nations. We are in full support (of the government) on the issue.”

Telecom scam: Sukhram’s appeal referred to HC Div Bench

New Delhi: The fate of former Union Communications Minister Sukhram in a telecom scam case remained undecided as a single judge Bench of the Delhi High Court on Friday referred his appeal against the conviction and three years jail term to a Division Bench.

Justice S Muralidhar in his judgement said that the case has to be referred to the Division Bench as several legal issues are involved in it.
