Iran test-fires short-range missiles

Tehran, September 27: Iran said it successfully test-fired short-range missiles during military drills Sunday by the elite Revolutionary Guard, a show of force days after the U.S. warned Tehran over a newly revealed underground nuclear facility it was secretly constructing.

Congress culture exposed: Javdekar

Hyderabad, September 27: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) general secretary and official spokesman Prakash Javdekar said after the sudden demise of chief minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy, the true culture of the Congress party was exposed.

Two teenagers drown

Hyderabad, September 27: Two teenagers were drowned in a tank at Jellpally village under Pahadisherif police station limits on Saturday.

The victims – Mohammed Abdul (19) of Owaisi Colony and Mohammed Yasin (17) of Madannapet – came to Jellpally to collect money from their friend.

As he was not available at home, they went to a nearby tank for swimming and got drowned. The bodies were retrieved from the tank and shifted to Osmania General Hospital for conducting an autopsy.

Abdul was working as an electrician while Yasin worked in a bakery.

Awareness campaign for women against heart diseases

New Delhi, Sep 27 (IANS) The All India Heart Foundation (AIHF) will launch an awareness drive for heart diseases among women, which they consider the most neglected and least prioritised group in the society.

A brainchild of AIHF president S. Padmavati, the campaign, which would be implemented by “The Red Brigade of Women”, aims at addressing the susceptibility of women to heart diseases.

The 10 member “brigade” would not only comprise women doctors and a nursing superintendent but would also include housewives and young women professionals.

Three held with fake postal stamps in Uttar Pradesh

Allahabad, September 27:Three people were arrested from this Uttar Pradesh town with fake postal stamps worth Rs.700,000, police said Sunday.

“The fake stamps are mostly of Rs.1 and Rs.5 denominations. These men used to scan the original stamps and reproduce them with the help of a computer and a colour printer,” Deputy Inspector General of Police (Allahabad) Chandra Prakash told reporters.

The men were identified as Shafat Ahmed, Rashid Alam and Zubair. Police also recovered a computer, a scanner and a colour printer from them.

BJP wants government intervention in Air India strike

Dhoni blames bowlers for loss against Pakistan

Centurion, September 27:India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has blamed the bowlers for his side’s 54-run loss to Pakistan in the Champions Trophy.

The Indian bowlers were smacked all over the ground by the Pakistani batsmen, who piled on 302 runs batting first at the SuperSport Park here Saturday.

Off-spinner Harbhajan Singh conceded 71 runs from 10 overs with Rudra Pratap Singh, Yusuf Pathan and Ashish Nehra each dishing out over 50 runs each.

“I was feeling not one bowler short but three bowlers short. It was tough to set a field for them,” Dhoni said.

Airtel launches new plans for US callers to India

New Delhi, September 27:Mobile operator Bharti Airtel Sunday announced two schemes enabling cheaper calls from the US to India as part of a festive season offer.

Under the first scheme, users will get 1,353 minutes of calls for $24.99.

“It also comes with a validity of six months so a user can buy the plan during this festive season and can use it till the Holi festival in March next year,” Bharti Airtel said in a statement.

India seeks united action against terrorism

United Nations, September 27:India has asked the world community to urgently help bring to justice the perpetrators of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, saying it is their collective responsibility and duty to fight the “malignant menace” of terrorism.

“The barbaric terrorist attack on the innocent people of Mumbai on Nov 26, 2008 reminds us of the daily and malignant menace that terrorism poses to all countries,” External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna said in the UN General Assembly Saturday.

Alert for fleeing Chinese nationals, no one held: Officials

New Delhi/Raipur, September 27:Indian airport authorities are on the lookout for Chinese nationals who have fled from a Bharat Aluminium Company Ltd (Balco) plant in Chhattisgarh, after an under-construction chimney collapsed killing 45 people, but no one has been detained till now, officials said Sunday.

“About 70 Chinese nationals, mostly engineers, have left Korba town amid rising death toll of workers,” a police source told IANS in Raipur.

Andhra-based company to plug holes of sunken ship

Bhuvneshwar, September 27: A company based in Andhra Pradesh has been awarded the contract to plug the holes in a ship that sank off Orissa’s Paradip port Sep 9, a port official said Sunday.

‘We have finalized the contract for the work to plug air vents, sounding pipes and other holes to ensure that there is no oil leakage from the ship,’ port deputy chairman Biplav Kumar told IANS.

The work has been awarded to the Visakhapatnam-based J. Enterprises and Dives, which specialises in underwater repair and maintenance work. The work commenced Sunday, the official said.

‘Pak wants to consult Kashmiri leaders on resolution’

New York, September 27: Pakistan wants to consult all sections of the Kashmiri leadership while seeking a resolution of the Kashmir issue based on “ground realities”, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi has said.

“We want to consult them…We want to move towards a solution based on ground realities,” Qureshi told reporters here after a meeting with Hurriyat chairman Mirwaiz Omar Farooq and PoK prime minister Sardar Yaqub Khan.

Fire engulfs 20 shops in CM Omar’s constituency

Srinagar, September 27: Fire destroyed 20 shops in Ganderbal, the home constituency of Chief Minister Omar Abdulla, hours after 30 structures were charred at Gurez sector near the LoC in Bandipora district.

Fire broke out in one of the shops at Beehama chowk, 23 kms from here, early today and it spread to adjoining shops, sources said. There was no casualty.

Though fire tenders were called in, 20 shops were damaged. The loss of property is estimated to be over Rs one crore.

Surrendered ULFA militant shot dead

Nalbari, September 27: Unknown assailants shot dead a surrendered ULFA cadre in lower Assam’s Baksa district, police said today.

Police said the two armed assailants shot dead Gunojit Bhorali (30) from close range at Baganpara near a Durga Puja pandal last night.

Bhorali was shifted in a serious condition to Nalbari civil hospital from where he was referred to the Gauhati Medical College Hospital.

The surrendered cadre, known as SULFA, succumbed to his injuries on way to the hospital.

Police have launched a search operation to nab the assailants.

Three French soldiers killed in Afghan storm

Kabul, September 27: Officials in France say three French soldiers have been killed in a violent storm in northeastern Afghanistan.

President Nicolas Sarkozy’s office says the three died while taking part in an operation on Saturday night in the Afghanya Valley. French military spokesman Christophe Prazuck says one of the soldiers was struck by lightning while the other two were swept away by a flooding river.

Afghan minister survives assasination attempt

Kabul, september 27: Police said a bomb targeting Afghanistan’s energy minister exploded outside a girl’s high school in the country’s west.

Minister Ismail Khan and his delegation escaped unharmed after yesterday’s bombing in Herat. A spokesman for police in western Afghanistan said there are civilian casualties, but he did not know how many.

Mr Khan is considered the major powerbroker in the region and was once governor of Herat, a western province bordering Iran.

Iranian military stages missile exercises

Tehran, September 27: The Iranian military staged missile exercises today in a move that is sure to further inflame an international row over the country’s nuclear capability.

The tests involved short-range missiles fired during drills by the regime’s Revolutionary Guards, according to Iranian state television.

Six killed in Haryana road accident

Chandigarh, September 27: Six people, including a woman, were killed Sunday when the car in which they were travelling slammed into a truck in Panipat district of Haryana, police said.

The car, being rashly driven, rammed into the stationary truck from the rear in Samalkha town of Panipat, about 130 km from here.

“Six of the eight occupants of the car were killed. Other two were seriously injured. We have shifted the injured to a civil hospital,” Samalkha Station House Officer Kaptan Singh told IANS.

Bharti-MTN talks could go into overtime: Analysts

New Delhi, September 27: Talks between India’s top mobile firm Bharti and South Africa’s flagship cellular group MTN may have to be extended due to new hurdles in their bid to create a telecoms giant, analysts say.

But a deal could still emerge despite regulatory obstacles that have cropped up in the complex 24-billion-dollar share-swap negotiations, they said.

The latest deadline set by Bharti Airtel, owned by tycoon Sunil Bharti Mittal, and MTN to wrap up exclusive talks to create the world’s third-largest mobile phone operator by subscribers expires Wednesday.

RIL justifies levy of marketing margin on gas sale

New Delhi, September 27: In the face of opposition from the Power Ministry and an Anil Ambani group firm on the marketing margins charged, Reliance Industries has justified the levy saying it was essential to cover risks and costs incurred in marketing of gas.

“The marketing margin being charged by RIL on sale of KG-D6 gas is fair and justified consideration for the risks and costs undertaken in the GSPA including such risks and costs beyond the delivery point,” RIL president (Gas Business) wrote to Power Secretary H S Brahma.
