Students allege ragging in UP college

Lucknow, September 01: Four students of a private college in Uttar Pradesh’s Sitapur district have alleged they were ragged and assaulted by their seniors.

Second year B.Tech students of Sitapur Shikshan Sansthan, a college offering several technical courses, have complained to college authorities that fourth year students had beaten them up after they refused to sing and dance as part of ragging on Monday.

Somdev, Sania in US Open second round

New York, September 01: India’s Somdev Devvarman had an easy outing while Sania Mirza battled to enter the singles’ second round of the US Open tennis at the Flushing Meadows.

The 161st ranked Devvarman cruised into the men’s second round with a 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 win over 110th ranked Portuguese Fredrico Gil here on Monday.

Traffic police penalise Harbhajan

Chandigarh, September o1: Harbhajan Singh, who on Monday arrived in Chandigarh in style in his brand new sports utility vehicle (SUV) Hummer, was penalised on Tuesday for driving it without number plates.

The Chandigarh traffic police landed up at Harbhajan’s hotel to investigate the case on Tuesday morning. He was made to pay Rs 3,000 fine for the offence.

Harbhajan had driven his brand new Hummer from Jalandhar to Chandigarh. The Indian spinner has been in Chandigarh to participate in the BCCI Corporate Trophy tie.

UP to set up Special Task Force against adulterators

Lucknow, September 01: Cracking its whip on adulterators, the Uttar Pradesh government will set up a special task force in the newly created Food and Drug Authority to give it more teeth, a senior official said. “For effective action against adulterators and to nail inter-district and inter-state adulteration rackets, a Special Task Force will be set up in the Authority,” Principal Secretary, Food and Medicine, Desh Deepak Varma said.

Maruti reports 41.6 percent jump in August sales

New Delhi, September 01: Passenger car leader Maruti Suzuki India Tuesday reported sales of 84,808 vehicles in August, registering a growth of 41.6 percent over that in the corresponding month last year.

The sales include 14,847 units exported, Maruti said in a regulatory statement.

The company had sold 59,908 vehicles in August 2008.

Maruti Suzuki’s volumes in the domestic A2 segment comprising Alto, Wagon R, Estilo, Swift, A-Star and Ritz grew 39.3 percent to 52,473 units. The company had sold 37,667 units in August last year in the same segment.

Blaze caused panic in Tolichowki

Hyderabad, September 01 (Siasat News): Sana Arcade situated at Tolichowki was engulfed with smoke of the fire, which broke out at the time of namaz-e-asar.

The thick smoke caused heavy traffic jam. The fire was the cause of a short circuit in a furniture godown but fortunately there are no casualties reported. However, the exact amount of the damage is yet to be ascertained.

As soon as the news of the fire spread, the fire engines from Madhapur, Gowlipura and Langar Houz were brought in service and they had to struggle to extinguish the fire by 8.30 pm.

Pak hand seen in Russian warship hijack?

Islamabad, September 01: Investigations into the hijacking of a Russian warship in April by Somali pirates show that Pakistani nationals played an important role in the hijack.

Twelve Pakistanis had been apprehended along with the Somali pirates. Pakistan has so far not launched a probe into the Russian allegations and claimed that 12 men were fishermen, the Times Now television channel reports.

Israel reaches deal on schooling for Ethiopian Jews

Israel, September 01: Israel’s Education Ministry said on Monday it had reached a deal with three Jewish religious schools to admit about 100 Ethiopian Jewish students, averting further public outcry.

The schools initially refused to admit the students, drawing protests from Israel’s 100,000-strong Ethiopian community and censure from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who termed their refusal an attack on the country’s morals.

Delay in Seeking Treatment Main Cause of Oman H1N1 Deaths

Muscat, September 01: Most of the deaths caused by H1N1 in Oman resulted from patients’ delay in reporting to health institutions, a key official said.

In other cases, Dr Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Saidi, Health Affairs Under-secretary, added the infected persons suffered from 
other diseases.

Nine people, including an expatriate, have lost their lives to swine flu in 
the Sultanate.

The total number of people affected by the disease since it first broke out in Oman at the end of July is around 900.

Opposition mounts to Ahmadinejad cabinet

Tehran, September 01: Leading Iranian MPs voiced strong opposition on Monday to some of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s proposed ministers, including women, on the second day of a heated debate on his cabinet line-up.

Parliament is due to hold a vote of confidence on the 21-member cabinet on Wednesday but the hardline Ahmadinejad is battling to win support even from conservative MPs who complained about the inclusion of women and charged that many of his nominees lacked experience.

Palestinians warned not to declare de facto state

Jerusalem, September 01: Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman on Monday warned the Palestinians against a plan to establish a state by 2011 regardless of the outcome of the Middle East peace process.

“If the unilateral initiative presented by (Palestinian prime minister) Salam Fayyad is promoted, Israel will respond,” Lieberman was quoted by his office as telling EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana and Mideast Quartet envoy Tony Blair.

Body of girl found in bag on train in Uttar Pradesh

Lucknow, September 01: The body of a teenage girl was found in an unattended bag in a Mumbai-bound train in Uttar Pradesh Tuesday.

Panic prevailed in an AC coach of the Maharashtra Sampark Kranti Express after a large unattended bag was found underneath a seat.

The ticket collector informed the Government Railway Police (GRP) and the train was detained at the Mathura railway station for over two hours early Tuesday.

‘The bomb squad first frisked the bag after which it was opened. The girl appears to be about 15 years old,’ GRP inspector Santosh Kumar told IANS.

Philippine police arrest suspected Muslim militant

Manila, September 01: Police have captured a suspected al-Qaida-linked militant accused of high-profile kidnappings of at least four Americans and dozens of Filipinos in the southern Philippines, officials said Tuesday.

Last week’s arrest of Hajer Sailani, an alleged member of the Abu Sayyaf, in a shopping mall in southern Cotabato city was the latest success of a crackdown that has netted several militants in the country’s south and foiled kidnapping and terror plots, police said.

US welcomes Armenia-Turkey normalization plan

Washington, September 01: The United States on late Monday welcomed the plan by Armenia and Turkey to establish diplomatic ties, saying it was “ready to work closely” with both sides in support of improved relations.

“The United States warmly welcomes the joint statement made today by Turkey and Armenia,” said State Department spokesman Ian Kelly, referring to the plans to establish diplomatic relations and re-open their border in a bid to end decades of mutual distrust and resentment.

Armenia, Turkey move toward diplomatic ties

Ankara, September 01: Armenia and Turkey moved closer to establishing diplomatic ties and reopening their border on Monday, saying they would sign accords within six weeks.

The neighbours have no diplomatic ties, a closed border and a history of animosity stemming from the mass killing of Armenians by Ottoman Turks during World War One.

Both sides said they would hold domestic consultations before signing two protocols on the establishment of diplomatic relations and development of bilateral relations.

6 of family commit suicide in Allahabad due to financial crisis

Allahabad, September 01: Six members of a family, including four children, committed suicide by jumping before a speeding train on the Allahabad- Varanasi section near Sarai Inayat area today.

According to reports, the poor family took the drastatic step due to financial crisis.

SSP/DIG Chandra Prakash said here that police was investigating the incident but confirmed that family dispute and poverty could be the reasons for the step.

China, Turkey look to move past Xinjiang row

Beijing, September 01: Turkey has vowed to seek better ties with China, the foreign ministry here said, as the two sides look to mend fences after a row over Beijing’s handling of unrest in mainly Muslim Xinjiang.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan conveyed the message through a representative who met Monday with Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, the ministry said in a statement posted on its website.

Pakistan to Part Finance Construction of Sports & Recreation Club in Dubai

Dubai, September 01: Pakistan Prime Minsiter Yousuf Raza Gilani has promised that the Pakistan government will partly finance the construction of the Pakistan Sports and Recreation Club in Dubai.

While speaking to the media and Pakistani community members during a brief stopover in Dubai on Sunday, Gilani reiterated President Asif Ali Zardari’s earlier pledge to provide more than 25 per cent of the Dh25 million cost of the long pending construction.

DEWA Campaigns To Save Energy in Govt Offices

Dubai, September 01: To reduce energy demand during peak summer hours in the emirate, the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) is raising awareness with government departments as part of its Summer Peak-Load

During peak hours in the summer season, between 12 noon to 5pm, energy consumption in Dubai registers a dramatic increase, with air-conditioning alone accounting for nearly 60 per cent of the total power intake by residential and commercial users.

CBSE Makes Class X Board Exams Optional

Dubai, September 01: Students studying under India’s Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) can rejoice over a 
decision taken by the government which allows them to skip the board exams for Class X. One of the biggest reforms to have been made in the board’s system, it will affect more than 51 schools in the UAE.

The proposal to make Class X board optional was made by Human Resources Minister, Kapil Sabil in June. The decision, which is to me implemented from the next academic year, has received a mixed response.

Turkey, Armenia to launch talks on diplomatic ties

Yerevan, September 01: Armenia and Turkey, bitter foes for a century, took a step toward reconciliation Monday by announcing they would launch final talks aimed at establishing diplomatic ties. But they won’t discuss the deepest source of their enmity: the World War I-era massacres of Armenians under Ottoman rule.

Both sides said in a joint statement they expected the talks to take six weeks and to end with an agreement setting up and developing ties. The two countries, whose shared border is closed, are U.S. allies and came under American and European pressure to move toward peace.
