‘Spiderman’ fined for scaling Petronas Towers

Kuala Lampur, September 02: French climber Alain Robert, known as “Spiderman” for his death-defying antics, was fined by a Malaysian court on Wednesday for scaling the nation’s tallest building.

Robert scrambled up the 88-storey Petronas Twin Towers with his bare hands in less than two hours on Tuesday, finally reaching its peak after two unsuccessful attempts over the past decade.

“Climbing is my passion, climbing is my life,” the daredevil said outside court when asked why he had scaled the towers, which were for a time the world’s tallest buildings.

Taiwan court convicts former first lady of perjury

Taipei, September 02: A court has sentenced Taiwan’s former first lady to a year in jail for giving false testimony in a wide-ranging corruption case involving her and her husband, a preliminary verdict in a major trial expected to wrap up later this month.

Wu Shu-chen, wife of former President Chen Shui-bian, was convicted on charges of asking her children to lie during a probe into the graft case, the Taipei District Court said in a verdict handed out late Tuesday. It said that Chen’s son, daughter and son-in-law each were sentenced to six months in jail for perjury.

Post-Kaminey, Shahid charges Rs 15 cr per film

Mumbai, September 02: Director Subhash Ghai is reportedly upset with Shahid Kapur as the actor has asked for Rs 15 crore to do a film with him. Shahid, who was once a dance extra in Ghai’s Taal, is on cloud nine after the success of his recent release Kaminey and is not ready to work at a cheaper price.

Gaddafi marks 40 years in power

Tripoli, September 02: Libyan leader Moamer Kadhafi marked the 40th anniversary of the bloodless coup that brought him to power, with celebrations attended by African, Arab and Latin American leaders but largely ignored by the West.

At the end of a two-hour show late Tuesday retracing the 40 years since Kadhafi ousted King Idriss in 1969, a brief video clip showed the return to Libya last month of Lockerbie bomber Abdelbaset Ali Mohmet al-Megrahi, but the western delegations present did not react.

Saudi Arabia not in favour of Musharraf’s trial

Dubai, September 02: Saudi Arabia Tuesday said it is not in favour of a trial against former Pakistani president Pervez Musharraf which could further deteriorate the volatile political situation in that country, the Online news agency reported.

Saudi King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz Tuesday urged the Pakistani leadership to abide by the agreement reached at the time of Musharraf’s resignation that no action would be taken against the former president.

Obese men more apt to get prostate cancer

New York, September 02: Men who put on a significant number of pounds after their 20s face a higher risk of prostate cancer than those who remain close to their youthful weight — but the effects vary by race, a new study indicates.

Researchers found that among nearly 84,000 middle-aged and older US men followed for about a decade, white and African-American men who had gained weight since the age of 21 had a higher risk of developing prostate cancer.

Bottom falling out of Afghan opium market: UN

Kabul, September 02: Opium production in Afghanistan has fallen for a second year running with poppy cultivation down 22 percent and prices among the lowest in a decade, a UN report said Wednesday.

The destitute country produces around 90 percent of the world’s opium, used to make heroin sold on the streets of Europe and Central Asia, with profits feeding a resurgent Taliban in an eight-year war.

9-year-old boy sacrificed in Ghaziabad

Ghaziabad, September 02: A nine-year-old boy was mercilessly murdered, apparently in the name of god, in Ghaziabad district of Uttar Pradesh.

Hrithik, a resident of Muradnagar area, was sacrificed by a tantrik (one who practises black magic). Hrithik had gone to buy a chocolate on Sunday evening, but he never returned.

The panic stricken family of Hrithik registered a complaint with the police on Monday. Their worst fears were confirmed on Tuesday when Hrithik’s uncle discovered his body in the nearby fields.

Antony to talk poll alliance with Pawar

New Delhi, September 02: Defence Minister and AICC general secretary A.K. Antony briefed Congress president Sonia Gandhi on the Maharashtra election scenario on Tuesday, even as the NCP and the Congress race against time to sew up an alliance.

Sensex opens weak, tries to crawl up

Mumbai, September 02: A key index of the Indian equities markets opened weak today and was trying to crawl up into the green within about ten minutes of start of trade.

The sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 15,482.05 points, was trying to move up into the green. It was ruling at 15,529.12 points, 22.07 points or 0.14 percent lower than its previous close, about 10 minutes into trade.

Bangalore techie dies of swine flu

Bangalore, September 02: A 31-year-old software engineer died of influenza A (H1N1) here, taking the toll from the virus to 28 in Karnataka, an official said Wednesday.

The software engineer, a native of Tamil Nadu, was working with a reputed US-based IT company here. He was admitted to Lakeside Hospital in the city on August 28 and breathed his last Tuesday evening, official added.

BJP MP’s daughter ‘kidnapped’ from outside his house

New Delhi, September 02: A BJP MP’s daughter was allegedly kidnapped from outside his Mahadev Road residence in New Delhi on Sunday.

The Lok Sabha MP from Western Uttar Pradesh lodged an FIR with the Parliament Street police station, alleging that his minor daughter had been “taken away by some unknown persons”. The police officers registered a case and were investigating the matter.

According to the complaint, the incident took place at around 11.40 pm last Sunday.

The girl is one of the three children of the MP, who was a Union minister during the NDA regime.

Undeterred Nitish pushes his wishlist

Patna, September 02: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s wishlist to the Centre is getting longer by the day in spite of the UPA government’s apparent reluctance to fulfil his demands.

Nitish met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at his 7, Race Course Road bungalow in New Delhi on Tuesday, apparently renewing his demand for adequate flood and drought packages for the state.

Man lynched for killing minor servant in Jharkhand

Jharkhand, September 02: After Andhra Pradesh reported two consecutive cases of mob rule running amok, a similar incident took place in a village in Dumka district of Jharkhand.

A man, accused of killing his servant, was beaten to death in full public view and shockingly, in the presence of police on Tuesday.

Surjeet, who allegedly shot dead his 10-year-old domestic help in a fit of rage, was attacked by the agitated villagers at his residence.

In the heat of the moment, Surjeet apparently pulled out a pistol. Enraged, the villagers started beating him.

Chinese sentences dissident to 13 years jail

Beijing, September 02: A Chinese dissident who tried to organize a national meeting of the banned China Democracy Party has been sentenced to 13 years in jail for subverting state power, his lawyer said Wednesday.

Xie Changfa, 57, was tried in April and sentenced Tuesday by the Changsha Municipal Intermediate Court in southern China’s Hunan province, his lawyer Ma Gangquan said in a telephone interview. He plans to appeal, Ma said.

San Francisco, September 02: Two US journalists jailed for illegally entering North Korea spoke about their ordeal for the first time on Tuesday, claiming they were forcibly dragged back into the Stalinist state from China by soldiers.

Television journalists Laura Ling and Euna Lee were sentenced to 12 years hard labor by North Korea before being freed following a diplomatic mission spearheaded by former US President Bill Clinton last month.
