NTPC moves SC against Bombay HC ruling on RIL gas dispute

New Delhi, September 05: Power PSU NTPC today moved the Supreme Court challenging Bombay High Court’s decision that allowed Mukesh Ambani group firm RIL to amend its petition on the gas dispute citing government’s pricing policy.

A Division Bench of the the Bombay High Court had allowed amendment in the petition wherein RIL had prayed that the government’s policy on pricing of gas would frustrate its contract with NTPC.

BJP announces candidates for bypolls to 4 seats

Lucknow, September 05: The BJP has announced candidates for bypolls to four assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh, including Lucknow (West), which fell vacant after senior BJP leader Lalji Tandon was elected to the Lok Sabha in May.

Amit Puri, former state president of local bodies cell, has been named as candidate for the Lucknow (West) seat, a party spokesperson said.

Puri had, earlier, unsuccessfully contested the 2007 assembly elections as an independent candidate after being denied ticket by the BJP.

High tide in Sundarbans forces people to move to safety

Sandeshkhali, September 05: With the weather turning cyclonic, fresh areas in parts of Aila-hit Sundarbans have been flooded due to high tide forcing people to shift to safer places, official sources said today.

The Raimangal river was overflowing and had caused two breaches in Manipur panchayat under Sandeshkhali II block in South 24 Parganas district, local Block Development Officer, Subhajit Mondal told PTI.

The breaches had been caused at Gopaler Ghat and Boaler Char, he said adding the irrigation department officials had been informed about the same.

RBI model to provide banking services in remote areas

Agartala, September 05: The Reserve Bank of India has adopted a business correspondence model, acting as an agent of a commercial bank, to provide banking services to the people of remote areas where there is no banking outlet.

The model would be ideal for North Eastern states like Tripura, a state full of terrains and scattered population, said Usha Thorat, RBI deputy governor here in a seminar.

Properties destroyed in three fire mishaps

Madurai, September 05: Properties worth Rs seven lakh have been destroyed in a fire that broke out in a settlement at the foothills of Palani temple near here, police said today.

A spark in one of the houses last evening ignited the thatched roof and the fire spread out fast, destroying about ten houses. Television sets and other articles in the houses were burnt to ashes, police said.

In another mishap, 57 houses destroyed in a fire that broke out in the slum areas at Azhvarpuram, Puliyanthoppu and Melakkratheru here yesterday evening.

Pondy varsity to become ‘largely greener’

Puducherry, September 05: As many as 2,200 saplings of 36 varieties of trees would be planted at the premises of Pondicherry University at Kalapet near here, under a project to make the area ‘largely greener’.

The project would be launched on September seven by Professor J A K Tareen, VC of the university.

The university, which was established under an Act of Parliament in 1985, was situated over an 800 acre-land, provided by the Puducherry administration.

New Indian priests perform rituals at Pashupatinath

Kathmandu, September 05: Unfazed by the attack on them by a group of Maoists demanding their replacement by locals, two newly-appointed Indian priests at the famous Pashupatinath temple here today performed the daily rituals at the 5th century Hindu shrine.

Girish Bhatta and Raghavendra Bhatta, both 32, were severely thrashed yesterday by some 40-50 Maoists, who entered the shrine posing as devotees. The priests’ clothes and sacred threads were also torn by the former rebels.

Rs 15 cr being realised as goonda tax in UP: Mulayam

Lucknow, September 05: Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav today accused the Uttar Pradesh government of failing to ensure relief work in drought and flood-hit areas and alleged that people are being forced to pay “goonda tax (extortion money)”.

“Crops have been damaged due to drought and floods rendering lakhs of people homeless and forcing farmers to commit suicide but the insensitive state government has done nothing to provide relief so far,” Yadav said during a meeting of party leaders here yesterday.

Pak not serious in punishing Mumbai attackers: Krishna

Bangalore, September 05: Accusing Pakistan of not being serious in punishing perpetrators of the Mumbai terror attacks, External Affairs Minister S M Krishna today said India has provided enough evidence for their prosecution.

He also made it clear that Pakistan was to be blamed for the suspension of the composite dialogue after the 26/11 terror strikes and said it has to take the initiative for the resumption of the process.

Mumbai, September 05: A Bihar court has issued a non-bailable arrest warrant against Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray for allegedly making uncharitable and inflammatory remarks against Biharis in his party mouthpiece ”Saamna”. Sub-divisional Judicial Magistrate (Bhojpur) Rakesh Pati Tiwari ordered issuance of the NBW against the Sena founder after Thackeray failed to appear before him in compliance with his July 7 order.

Hopes fade for people missing after Indonesian earthquake

Jakarta, September 05: Rescuers searched Saturday for 37 people missing in a landslide triggered by an earthquake that struck Indonesia’s Java island this week, but hopes of finding survivors were slim, an official said.

Sixty-five bodies were recovered after Wednesday’s magnitude-7.3 earthquake but the death toll was likely to rise, said Priyadi Kardono, spokesman for the National Agency for Disaster Management.

“The search is continuing, but it’s unlikely to find survivors from the landslide,” Kardono said.

3 Chhota Rajan aides arrested in Allahabad

Lucknow, September 05: Three aides of underworld don Chhota Rajan were arrested from Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh, police said Saturday.

Prateek Singh, Rahul Singh and Chandradhari, all in their early 20s, used to operate as shooters for the underworld don, the police alleged. They were nabbed Friday night from Georgetown locality of Allahabad, about 200 km from state capital Lucknow.

They were arrested by the Special Operation Group (SOG) and local police, SOG inspector Dhananjay Mishra told reporters.

US man arrested for murdering 8 people, including 7 relatives

Washington, September 05: A US man was arrested in the murders of eight people, including seven of his relatives, nearly a week after he telephoned authorities to alert them to the killings.

Guy Heinze Jr, 22, was arrested Friday in the deaths at the family’s mobile home at a trailer park in the south-eastern state of Georgia in Brunswick, a small city on the Atlantic coast, about 100 kilometres south of Savannah.

Heinze had placed an emergency call to authorities August 29, the day the killings occurred, saying, “My whole family’s dead.”

250 Specialised British Publications to Supplement Sharjah Chamber Library

Sharjah, September 05: About 250 new books featuring the best specialised British publications in the areas of public administration, human resources, business, leadership, finance, marketing and accounting among others, will be added to the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) library.

The SCCI recently hosted a ceremony during which it announced the addition of several new specialised books and publications to the SCCI library.
