India to use Facebook, Twitter to curb road accidents

New Delhi, September 28: Social networking sites Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and even blogs will be made use of by the Indian government to spread the message of safe driving, transport officials said Monday.

“For generating mass awareness about road safety, apart from using traditional media tools, modern web-based social networking tools will be used to spread knowledge of road safety,” K.K. Kapila, vice chairman of the International Road Federation (IRF), said in a statement.

Air India softens stand after talks with pilots fail

New Delhi, September 28: After its talks with the agitating pilots ended inconclusive Monday, the Air India management said it was open for further negotiations and that a decision on thorny issues like the pilots’ incentives would be taken shortly.

“The management is open for discussions on the composition of the committee of executive pilots referred to in the office order dated Sept 27, 2009. Orders have been issued that PLI (productivity linked incentive) and flying allowance of July and August 2009 be disbursed immediately,” the airline said in a statement.

Contractor shot dead in Ghaziabad after parking dispute

Ghaziabad, September 28: A contractor was shot dead and a municipal employee critically injured in Ghaziabad late Sunday night after three men, one of whom is an army soldier, opened fire at them following a dispute over parking of vehicles, police said Monday.

The contractor, Prashant Chaudhary, was supervising the cleaning of Ambedkar road for the Dussehra festival and the work was being undertaken by municipal sweepers.

China completes highest resolution 3D map of moon

Beijing, September 28: Chinese experts Monday announced that the country’s space scientists have completed the world’s highest-resolution three-dimensional map of the moon.

The map, covering the whole surface of the moon, is based on image data obtained by a charge-coupled device (CCD) stereo camera carried by Chang’e-1, China’s first lunar probe vehicle, launched Oct 2007.

The spatial resolution of the map – measured by the distance of two features within an image that can be clearly defined – is 500 meters.

The charges against the men are believed to be connected to a July edition of the Bold Red Line show on the LBC satellite channel, in which Mazen Abdel-Jawad, 32, along with three unnamed others, told the show about his premarital sexual adventures.

West Bengal sounds alert in Maoist-hit districts

Kolkata, September 28: The West Bengal government Monday sounded a high alert in three Maoist-affected districts following the arrest of People’s Committee against Police Atrocity (PCAPA) leader Chattradhar Mahato Saturday.

“We’ve alerted the police and the district administration and asked them to be prepared for any untoward incident and retaliation by the Maoists extremists,” West Bengal Chief Secretary Ashok Mohan Chakraborty told reporters here.

He said a high alert had already been sounded in all three Maoist-infested western districts – Bankura, Purulia and West Midnapore.

TDP revamps organisation, Editor Siasat in politburo

Hyderabad, September 28: Telugu Desam Party on Monday revamped its organisational structure with party president N Chandrababu Naidu appointing a 20-member Politburo, which includes several new faces.

The Editor ‘Siasat’, Mr.Zahed Ali Khan, who unsuccessfully contested the Lok Sabha election this year from Hyderabad, found a place in the TDP Politburo.

Seven “al-Qaeda” agents arrested in Mauritania

Nouakchott, September 28: A Mauritanian army officer on Monday said soldiers had arrested seven armed men suspected of being members of the North African branch of al-Qaeda.

The men were arrested in the remote Limaghiti region, some 1,100 kilometres north-east of the capital, Nouakchott.

They were “active members of al-Qaeda,” a source in the Mauritanian military told the German Press Agency dpa, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to reporters.

Xerox to buy Affiliated Computer for $6.4 billion

New York, September 28: Xerox Corp said it will buy Affiliated Computer Services Inc in a $6.4 billion cash-and-stock deal that expands the copier company into outsourcing and data management.

The deal, priced at a 33.6 percent premium to ACS’s Friday closing price, is the latest in the active technology services sector. A week ago, Dell Inc said it would buy Perot Systems Corp. Hewlett-Packard Co may sell part of its outsourcing business.

Pakistani actress Meera’s husband booked for theft

Lahore, September 28: In the latest twist in Pakistani actress Meera’s stormy marriage, police have booked her husband Attique-ur-Rehman on charges of theft and threatening her life.

Meera had filed a petition in a Lahore court alleging that Attique-ur-Rehman had stolen goods worth of Rs.1.1 million after entering into her house and had also threatened to kill her.

Despite a direction to register a case against Attique-ur-Rehman, the police adopted delaying tactics, prompting the court to pass another order, Online news agency reported.

Over 4,000 Karnataka government doctors to quit Tuesday

Bangalore, September 28: Over 4,000 government doctors in Karnataka will resign Tuesday protesting a “meagre” hike in salaries but treatment of patients will not be affected as they have given two weeks’ time to authorities to accept their demand.

“We are resigning en masse Tuesday. We will wait till Oct 14 for the government to either concede our demands for better pay or accept our resignation,” H.N. Ravindra, president of the Karnataka Government Medical Officers Association, told IANS Monday.

Floods leave 17 dead in Vietnam

Hanoi, September 28: Four days of floods killed at least 17 people and left six missing in central Vietnam, the country’s Central Steering Committee for Flood and Storm Control said Monday.

Heavy rains destroyed more than 9,600 homes and flooded some 2,500 hectares of rice and 5,800 hectares of vegetables, officials said. Twenty three fishing boats were reported sunk.

The Central Hydro-Meteorological Forecast Center said a low pressure zone over the South China Sea caused rainfall of 300-400 millimetres since Thursday in the five central provinces.
