Attack on priests in Nepal barbaric, says Congress

Ranchi, September 06: The Congress today termed as “barbaric” the Maoists’ attack on two Indian priests of Pashupatinath temple in Kathmandu, saying such incidents “do no good” to Indo-Nepalese relations.

“Such barbaric acts in a place of worship are unimaginable…such actions do no good either to Nepal’s proud heritage or to Indo-Nepalese relations,” AICC spokesman Abhishek Manu Singhvi told newspersons here.

Tuskers run amuck in Thrissur

Thrissur, September 06: Two tuskers ran amuck here today causing panic for nearly three hours until they were brought under control.

The elephants, which were being taken to the residence of their owner, turned violent on the Thrissur-Chalakudy road, causing traffic snarls for nearly three hours, police said.

One of the elephants attacked a private passenger bus, but the driver sped on. Another one chased its second mahout for quite some distance.

They were later brought under control by the mahouts.

CCTV cameras to be installed in 22 districts of JK

Srinagar, September 06: Jammu and Kashmir police have decided to install CCTV cameras in all the 22 districts to strengthen security and check militant activities in the state.

“Police have decided to install CCTV cameras in all the 22 districts of the state to keep a tab on the movement of suspected persons and militants,” police officials told PTI.

A survey has been conducted and sensitive and vital places identified for installation of the cameras at the earliest.

Tender notice was recently issued for procuring and commissioning of the surveillance gadgets.

Bickering surfaces within BJP”s UP unit

Lucknow, September 06: Bickering within BJP”s state unit has come to the fore with some Senior leaders offering to quit in protest against the party”s decision of giving ticket to an “outsider” for the bypoll of Lucknow (west) assembly seat. “Agitated after denial of ticket to Ashutosh Tandon alias Gopalji, son of local MP Lalji Tandon, some senior leaders including office bearers of city unit have offered their resignation,” party sources said.

Allow use of Hindi in courts, urge lawyers

New Delhi, September 06: A group of lawyers have started a signature campaign in Delhi High Court and the five district courts of the capital, requesting that they be allowed to argue their cases in Hindi also apart from the English language now used.

“We have received a huge response from the lawyers and collected over 3,000 signatures so far to support our campaign,” said Ashok Aggarwal, president of the Delhi unit of the lawyers’ association.

The signature campaign began earlier this week in the five district courts and reached the high court on Friday.

Two bodies recovered in Leh under suspicious circumstances

Srinagar, September 06: Two unidentified bodies were recovered under suspicious circumstances at Leh in the Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir, official sources said here today.

They said panic gripped Gamtaso and Polo Ground in Leh when the bodies were found by locals.

Police were immediately informed who took the bodies for identification, they said, adding the cause of their death was not known.

Police registered a case and started investigation.

US to send arms to Afghanistan via Russia

Washington, September 06: Following a deal between Washington and Moscow, the US military will be able to use Russian airspace to send troops and arms to Afghanistan.

An unnamed US defense official told AFP on Sunday that the flights are legal as of September 6.

“This agreement gives us another option to choose from in our flight planning process,” the official said, giving no further details.

US President Barack Obama finalized an agreement in early July with Russian leader Dmitry Medvedev, allowing the US to supply Western forces in Afghanistan via Russia.

Former Punjab CM Brar dead

Muktsar (Punjab), September 06: Senior Congress leader and former Punjab Chief Minister Harcharan Singh Brar died following prolonged illness today, his family said.

Brar’s end, who also held the post of Governor in Haryana, came at his native village Sarai Nage in the district.

Brar, 87, is survived by wife, son and a daughter.

He had taken over as Chief Minister of Punjab on August 31, 1995 after the assassination of then Chief Minister Beant Singh in a bomb blast outside the Punjab and Haryana Secretariat in Chandigarh.

He held the post till November 21, 1996.

Iran calls on US to ‘respect’ appointment of controversial minister

Tehran, September 06: Tehran called on the United States Sunday to “respect” the appointment of General Ahmad Vahidi as Iran’s new defence minister, Mehr news agency reported. The US had criticized Vahidi’s appointment due his alleged involvement in the 1994 bombing of a Jewish community centre in Argentina, which killed 85 people.

“We recommend that the US government respect the will of the Iranian nation and regret the stance taken by Washington in this regard,” Foreign Ministry Spokesman Hassan Ghashghavi said.

List of 72 alleged post-vote victims rejected

Tehran, September 06: After a list of 72 people alleged to have been killed in the aftermath of the presidential election was made public in Iran, a national security official says the data lacks credibility.

Earlier on Friday, Reformist website Norooz News released the identities of 72 people it says were killed over the course of the post-vote turmoil in Iran.

The report posted on the website gives the names, ages, and details on how, when, and where most of the victims were killed.

Theft at President’s Estate; police say insider’s job

New Delhi, September 06: The office of President Pratibha Patil’s Officer on Special Duty was burgled in the high-security Rashtrapati Bhavan complex.

The office of Wing Commander Vikram Dutta, which is located in the health club of the Presidential Estate, was burgled on Wednesday and the thieves walked away with his computer, police officials said.

While a case was registered on September four, police officials believed that the job was that of an insider who has also walked away with six dumbbells from the health club.

Newly-wed sets herself ablaze

Muzaffarnagar (UP), September 06: A newly married woman today allegedly committed suicide over a family dispute in the district.

Anjali, who was married to Pravin two months ago, allegedly set herself ablaze at her house in Umarpur village, police said.

A family dispute was stated to be the cause behind her taking the extreme step. However, police have taken Pravin and his brother Sandip into custody.

The body of Anjali has been sent for postmortem.

Palestinians ‘seriously mulling’ one-state

Washington, September 06: Former US president Jimmy Carter said on Sunday Palestinian leaders were “seriously considering” a one-state solution for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, following a visit to the Middle East.

“A majority of the Palestinian leaders with whom we met are seriously considering acceptance of one state, between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea,” Carter wrote in an op-ed piece in The Washington Post.
