LTTE behind attack on Lankan cricketers: Gilani

Islamabad, September 06: Pakistan Premier Yousuf Raza Gilani on Sunday said Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa had told him the terrorists involved in the attack on his country’s cricket team in Lahore were funded by LTTE elements in the island.

Gilani said he had asked Rajapaksa to share more information about the funding so that Pakistan can send a team from the Interior Ministry to go into the issue further.

Arrested on Wednesday night from Faridabad in connection with the murder of party colleague and transporter Satyendra Singh in May this year, he would be lodged in the same high-security Beur jail which was inaugurated in his presence as the state’s junior building construction minister 15 years ago.

The jail was inaugurated by the then chief minister, Lalu Prasad, on August 11, 1994.

Indian priests ready to return to India after assault

New Delhi, September 06: In a fresh development in the beating of Indian priests at Pashupatinath temple at Nepal, the priests have said that they were ready to return to India.

The priests were assaulted by a group of Nepali Maoists at Pashupathinath Temple.

The Indian Government had already taken a tough stand over the incident and asked Nepal to ensure safety of the Indian priests.

The Nepalese government also offered apology over the incident and had declared PashupathinathTemple-a restricted/prohibited area.

Iran deplores US stance on new defense minister

Tehran, September 06: Following negative US remarks about Iran’s new defense minister, the Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman deplored Washington’s stance.

“This attitude shows the US does not believe in democracy in other countries,” Hassan Qashqavi said Sunday.

After Iran’s Majlis gave an overwhelming vote of confidence to Ahmad Vahidi as the new defense minister, the State Department’s PJ Crowley asserted that Iran has taken a “step backward” in putting an end to its international isolation.

Two women killed in road mishap at Kota

Kota, September 06: Two women were killed when their two-wheeler bumped into a car here, police said today. “The women riding on a two-wheeler were on their way to a school where they worked when a car coming from opposite direction hit them,” the police said.

“They were rushed to a nearby hospital where one of them identified as Urmila (35) was declared brought dead while the other, Shashi (40), succumbed to her injuries later,” they said. “A case has been registered with the Udyog Nagar police station and an investigation into the matter is on,” they added.

Curfew imposed in Sangali due to communal clash

Sangli, September 06: Curfew was imposed today in Sangli following communal clash between two communities, police said. The curfew will be in force till 2 pm tomorrow, they said.

The city had been tense since Thursday when some members of minority community allegedly damaged a Ganesh pendal depicting the historical scene of Shivaji killing Afzal Khan, they said. The Ganesh mandals here have not immersed the idols as a protest against the incident.

CCTV cameras to be installed in 22 districts of JK

Jammu, September 06: Jammu and Kashmir police have decided to install CCTV cameras in all the 22 districts to strengthen security and check militant activities in the state. “Police have decided to install CCTV cameras in all the 22 districts of the state to keep a tab on the movement of suspected persons and militants,” police officials told PTI. A survey has been conducted and sensitive and vital places identified for installation of the cameras at the earliest.

EU slams US-led Afghanistan bombing

Cairo, September 06: European foreign ministers have criticized the ‘catastrophic’ Friday bombing of north Afghanistan, which left 90 people, including many civilians, killed.

During an unofficial meeting in Sweden on Saturday, foreign ministers from different European Union nations censured NATO’s lethal attack on two fuel tankers, believed to have taken over by Taliban militants in Qonduz province, in which 90 people including dozens of civilians lost their lives.

Israel affirms plans to approve more settler homes

Israel, September 06: Israel stood firm on Sunday on a plan to authorise hundreds of new settler homes in the occupied West Bank before a possible construction freeze, shrugging off a rebuke from Washington.

“The prime minister will decide in the coming days on the building of hundreds of additional housing units in order to solve existing problems in various settlements,” Transport Minister Yisrael Katz told Israel Radio.
