Former minister’s son found shot dead in Punjab

Bathinda, August 02: Son of a former Akali Dal minister of Punjab was found murdered in his car in this Punjab town Sunday, police said.

Sandeep Singh Dhillon, son of former Akali Dal leader Teja Singh, was found dead in his car, according to officials. He had been shot in the back, possibly from a close range. He left his home in the morning with two of his friends.

District police chief Ashish Chaudhary said the police have registered a case and started our investigations.

Police sources said that Dhillon had an old enmity with another family of the same area over a piece of land.

22 lakh Maha govt employees to go on strike tomorrow

Mumbai, August 02: Nearly 22 lakh state government staff including secondary school teachers, junior college teachers, non-teaching staff will go on indefinite strike from on Monday demanding the implementation of 6th Pay Commission.

Already the University and college teachers are on indefinite ‘cease work’ strike from July 14 asking for the implementation of 6th Pay Commission and solution for other demands in writing.

Mystery shrouds post-mortem of Shastri

New Delhi, August 02: Was any post-mortem conducted on the body of former prime minister Lal Bahadur Shastri to know the causes of his mysterious death in Tashkent, in the erstwhile USSR, in 1966?

The Delhi Police in its reply to an RTI application has said it does not have any record pertaining to the death of the former prime minister.

The Ministry of External Affairs has already said no post-mortem was conducted in USSR.

Village’s ‘Shah Rukh Khan’ is mummy of monk

Himacha Pradesh, August 02: A nomadic biker, Anuj Singh, found the mummy of a Tibetan monk called Sangha Tenzin, inside a tomb at Ghuen Village in Spiti, Himachal Pradesh.

Professor Victor Mayer, who studies mummies, says it is at least 500 years old. “He died around the time that Columbus discovered America.” Anuj had taken Professor Mair and his team from the University of Pennsylvania, to see the mummy when they were in India for a research.

Apparently, the monk had given up his life while meditating in the position he was found mummified.

A Pakistani musician’s peace offering

Mumbai, August 02: Even as the governments of Pakistan and India still debate if they should talk to each other, Pakistani musician Shahvar Ali has come up with a peace album “No Saazish, No Jung” that features the voices of Mahatma Gandhi, Mohammad Ali Jinnah, Benazir Bhutto and Barack Obama.

He hopes to release it by Aug 14 and 15 — when Pakistan and India respectively celebrate their Independence Day — and says the terror attacks on Mumbai hurt both the neighbouring countries.

Death toll from Karachi building collapse at 23

Karachi, August 02: Authorities say rescue crews have pulled the bodies of two more women from the rubble of a collapsed five-story building in the southern Pakistani city of Karachi, bringing the death toll to 23.

Almost all the victims are women and children. Chief Fire Officer Ehtisham Uddin says the rescue operation was called off Sunday because all residents of the building have been accounted for.

Goud meets Chiru amidst reports of rejoining TDP

Hyderabad, August 02: Former Home Minister T Devender Goud’s homecoming is creating ripples both in Praja Rajyam and Telugu Desam parties. The PRP leadership was shocked over the exit of Goud, which was imminent within a week.

On the other, the TDP was facing dissent from several leaders within the party over the re-entry of Goud.

On his part, Goud today called on PRP chief Chiranjeevi and reportedly explained the reasons for leaving the party.

KCR to run party under collective leadership

Hyderbad, August 02: Coming under pressure from the rebels over his `dictatorial’ attitude, Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) president K Chandrasekhara Rao decided to run the party under the collective leadership. He gave enough hints to that effect to the party leaders at the first meeting of the newly-constituted Politburo, which was held here today. Rao left the meeting halfway giving a chance to the members to discuss the issues freely in his absence.

Capt Lakshmikantha Rao chaired the meeting after Rao left the TRS Bhavan.

CLP asks Babu to apologise to BC voters

Hyderabad, August 02: Charging that the petitioners, who have filed a case in the Andhra Pradesh High Court, with a plea to stay election process to 150 wards of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), belong to main Opposition Telugu Desam Party, the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) today demanded TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu to tender an unconditional apology to BC (Backward Class) voters for raising an `objection’ in respect of reservations to BCs in GHMC polls. The Opposition leader has been adopting a `dual policy’ in respect of BCs, it remarked.

Ansari praises Arogyasri, Jalayagnam

Hyderbad, August 02: Vice-President Hamid Ansari, who came here for a day’s visit, is all praise for Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy’s pet programmes Arogyasri and Jalayagnam. He said that he had not seen such an innovative programmes elsewhere in the country.

UGC pay-scales for university, teachers in state

Hyderabad, August 02: In a development that would bring cheers to thousands of faculty members in State universities, Government and aided colleges, the State Government has issued orders making their pay scale equivalent to that of the University Grants Commission pay scales, as suggested by the Sixth Pay Commission.

Even as the Department of Human Resource Development has given the fitment table on June 10, in order to implement the UGC pay scales to university and college teachers, the State Government has delayed to implement the same citing some technical problems.

Unruly ‘Men in Black’ get a khaki treat

Hyderabad, August 02: ‘Men in Black’ late on Friday night got a khaki treat in a fitting finale to an ‘unruly revelry’ that started with a binge in a pub, followed by rash and negligent driving on the Begumpet road and some fisticuffs with the cops.

Police said three Tanzanians — Y Kassam (21), Muaimu Mtengile (23) and Francis Onesmus (25) — were arrested after they rammed their vehicle into an oncoming car, slapped the car driver and subsequently assaulted the policemen who intervened.

Ansari receives warm welcome

Hyderabad, August 02: Vice-President of India Mohammed Hamid Ansari was given a warm welcome at the Hyderabad airport on his arrival on a day’s visit to the city. Governor Narayan Datt Tiwari and Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy received him at the airport at about 12.25 pm. He was in the city till 4.30 pm before leaving to New Delhi by a special Indian Air Force aircraft.

Angry stalker slits girl’s throat

Kurnool, August 02: In yet another case, a stalker allegedly tried to kill a girl on Saturday for rejecting his love at Allagadda in Kurnool district.

Madhuri, a fourth year student at Alpha Engineering College at Alagadda, was attacked by Vasu, a worker at Gifts and Cellphone Corner, with a blade. The accused was troubling the victim for the last three years. On Saturday, while on her way to the college, Madhuri went to Andhra Bank, Allagadda branch, at around 11 am to collect her scholarship.

STRAWBERRY CAKE RECIPE

Learn how to make this classic strawberry cake made of strawberries, eggs and vanilla extract.

Ingredients:

1 cup white sugar
2 eggs
1 3/4 tsp baking powder
1 cup icing sugar
1/2 cup milk
1/2 cup frozen strawberries
1 vanilla pudding cup
1 1/2 cup all purpose flour
1/2 cup butter
2 tsp vanilla extract

How to make strawberry cake:

Start by thawing the frozen strawberries in one cup of powder sugar.
In a separate bowl beat together sugar and butter until creamy.
Add in the eggs one at a time and then finely pour in the vanilla pudding. Add the thawed strawberries.

CHOCOLATE COCONUT CAKE RECIPE

Scrumptious chocolate coconut cake made from desicated coconut, cocoa, margarine and milk.

Ingredients:

1 1/2 oz. desicated coconut
1/2 cup milk
4 oz. margarine
6 oz. sugar
2 eggs
4 oz. plain flour
1 level tsp cocoa
pinch of salt
1 tspful baking powder

How to make chocolate coconut cake:

Soak the coconut in the milk for 1/2 hour.
Cream fat and sugar, add the lightly beaten eggs and then the coconut and milk.
Stir in the well-sieved dry ingredients, mix well and turn into a greased lined tin 10 inch by 8 inch.
Bake in a moderate oven for 30-40 minutes.

MANGO JELLY RECIPE

Ingredients:

1/2 kg ripe and hard Mango slices (not fully ripe)
3 cups Sugar (Cheeni)
1 3/4 cups Water
juice of one Lemon (Nimbu)

How to make mango jelly:

Put mango slices, water into deep pan, and cook until quite tender.
Remove from the fire.
Pass through a gravy strainer.
To the mango pulp add sugar and lemon juice and cook on a hot fire, stirring constantly until the jelly sets when tested.
Cool a little, and then pour in sterilized jars.

PINEAPPLE JAM RECIPE

Ingredients:

250 grams Pineapple (Ananas) pieces
250 grams Sugar (Cheeni)
1/2 teaspoon citric acid
1/4 teaspoon yellow color
2 1/2 cups Water

How to make pineapple jam:

Cook the pineapple pieces with water on a low fire until tender and 1 cup water is left.
Add sugar cook until it is dissolved.
Add citric acid and color, cook until setting point is reached.
Pour into a jar and cork tightly.

SC cautions courts on bails for accused in flesh trade cases

New Delhi, August 02: The Supreme Court has deplored the practice of courts casually granting bails to persons accused of heinous offences like coercing minor girls into prostitution racket.

“It is unfortunate that the investigating officers and the courts ordinarily fail to bear in mind a distinction between the rescued children including girls, on the one hand, and the persons who have been organising such immoral traffic in a systematic manner and have otherwise been aiding and abetting the commission of offences thereunder.

Congress all set for tough bargaining with Pawar

New Delhi, August 02: Buoyed by the good show in the Lok Sabha elections, Congress is all set for hard bargaining with Sharad Pawar over seat sharing in the coming Assembly polls in Maharashtra, harping on the fact that it emerged as the top party in the state while NCP was at the fourth spot.

“The strategy is not to break the alliance, but to have it on the terms of the Congress by telling Pawar to see reason in the wake of the changed scenario,” said a Union Minister from Maharashtra, who did not wish to be identified.

PU student booked for ragging

Chandigarh, August 02: A case has been registered against a second-year engineering student of the Panjab University (PU) for allegedly ragging his junior, police said today.

According to the police, Saurab Nandal of Rohtak town in Haryana studying here at University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET) was booked after the hostel warden registered a formal complaint against him.

PU authorities have also suspended the student until the probe against him is over.

Most sanitation workers unaware of their rights

New Delhi, August 02: A huge majority of the sanitation workers in the national capital are unaware of existence of the laws to stop manual scavenging and prevent atrocities on Scheduled Castes, a latest survey has showed.

The study, conducted by a team of city based think tank Indian Social Institute, found that 97 per cent of the ‘safai karamcharies’ in Delhi do not know about the 1993 Act that prohibits employment of manual scavengers.
