Commonwealth Games village not on Yamuna riverbed: apex court

New Delhi, July 30: The Supreme Court Thursday ruled that the Commonwealth Games village, meant to accommodate over 8,000 athletes from 71 countries, is not being built on the Yamuna riverbed or floodplain.

A bench of Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan gave the verdict, dismissing a Delhi High Court judgement of November 2008 and removing all uncertainties over the ongoing construction of the Games village.

BAHRAINI KING VISITS Crown Prince SULTAN

Riyadh, July 30: Crown Prince Sultan Bin Abdul Aziz, Deputy Premier, Minister of Defense and Aviation and Inspector General, on Tuesday received at his palace in Agadir, Morocco, Bahraini King Hamad Bin Isa Al-Khalifa.

The Bahraini leader was reassured about the health of the Crown Prince.

35 protected monuments not traceable

New Delhi, July 30: Of the 3,675 monuments protected by the central government 35 are not traceable, the Rajya Sabha was informed Thursday.
“Out of 3,675 centrally protected monuments or sites, 35 are not traceable,” the Minister of State for Planning and Parliamentary Affairs V. Narayanasamy said.

Narayanasamy added that the main causes for the disappearance of these monuments was “urbanization, commercialization and implementation of development projects.”

KSA: Israel gives peace no chance

Riyadh, July 30: Saudi Arabia on Wednesday said in response to US calls for diplomatic overtures toward Israel that the Jewish state’s settlement expansion is jeopardizing efforts to revive peace talks.

“It is Israel that has to move seriously toward the peace process,” Saudi foreign ministry spokesman Osama Nugali said. “As we all know, Israel is continuing to take unilateral measures by changing the geographic and demographic facts on the ground, by building settlements and expanding the existing ones,” he told AFP.

Parents protest ‘forcible’ hair-cutting of students

Chandigarh, July 30: Parents of six students of a government school here Thursday accused teachers of the school of allowing adult education students forcibly cut the hair of their wards.
Taking a serious note of the issue, officials of the Chandigarh education department said they would look into the case and take action against the guilty.

Maharashtra governor given additional charge of Gujarat

New Delhi, July 30: Maharashtra Governor S.C. Jamir has been given additional charge of Gujarat till the time designate Devendra Nath Dwivedi assumes the charge.

“President (Pratibha Patil) has appointed Jamir, governor of Maharashtra, to discharge the functions of the governor of Gujarat, in addition to his own duties, until Devendra Nath Dwivedi, the governor designate, assumes the charge of the office,” an official statement Thursday said.

24-year-old woman found dead

New Delhi, July 30: A 24-year-old woman was Thursday found dead under mysterious circumstances in her rented house in south Delhi, police said.
Veerpal Kaur alias Nikki was found dead in her rented fourth floor accommodation in Kalkaji area after police broke open the doors, locked from outside.

The body, reportedly found semi-nude, has been sent for an autopsy.

Police said Kaur hailed from Moga in Punjab and worked as assistant project manager in an IT company in Okhla.

Hyderabad, July 30: It was her denial to ‘oblige’ a desperate junior artiste which led to the murder of Arzoo Ali who was found dead at Sindhuri Lodge in Ramgopalpet recently.

Referring to her as a high class call girl, sleuths of North Zone task force team on Wednesday arrested Jangam Rajeshwaraiah alias Raju for the murder of the 25-year-old and a mother of two. Raju, a junior artiste and a resident of Shaikpet, brutally killed Arzoo simply because she refused to have sex with him.

Corporal punishment: Teacher hits girl

Hyderabad, July 30: Corporal punishment reared its ugly head once again, this time in a private school in Secunderabad. A Class IV student
of St Peter’s High School, Bowenpally, was hit on the hit with a metal geometry box by her Science teacher on Tuesday because she was being ‘mischievous’.

The girl, Isha (8), suffered a minor injury on her head but was evidently too scared to alert anyone about the incident throughout the day.

It was only when her father, Vijay Paul, came to pick her up after school that Isha revealed the matter to him.

VHP to celebrate Bajrang Dal’s silver jubilee

Hyderabad, July 30: The State Committee of Vishwa Hindu Parishad has decided to celebrate the silver jubilee of its front organisation, Bajrang Dal, in a big way across the State.

The decision was taken at a two-day meeting of the committee held in Kurnool recently. VHP Bhagyanagar Region president M Ramaraju, State secretary Ch Bal Reddy and Bajarang Dal State incharge Yaman Singh released the VHP State Committee’s resolutions at a press conference here today.

HC dismisses Chamundi’s plea

Hyderabad, July 30: The High Court today dismissed a quash petition filed by former secretary of Andhra Cricket Association V Chamundeswarinath who is facing charges of sexually harassing women cricketers.

While dismissing the petition, Justice G Bhavani Prasad remarked that the sections mentioned in the FIR were bailable and the petitioner may obtain bail from the police concerned.

A case was registered in Vijayawada and the State Government had appointed Additional DGP (recruitment) to probe the allegations.

Govt threatens to invoke Essential Commodities

Hyderabad, July 30: The State Government gave a stern warning to all the rice and red gram wholesale merchants in the State that if they do not release the illegal stocks they were hoarding into the open market they would invoke the Essential Commodities Act in the State from August 1.

The State Government suspects that a section of the wholesale merchants were creating an artificial scarcity in the market by hoarding huge stocks of rice and red gram.

Devender Goud rejoining TDP?

Hyderabad, July 30: Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) is set to receive another jolt as its senior leader and former Home Minister T Devender Goud plans to quit the party to rejoin his parent Telugu Desam Party.After the PRP’s poor-show in the Assembly elections, Goud’s name has been doing rounds in political circles that he would rejoin TDP.

Vijayashanti meets TRS rebel leader Rehman

Hyderabad, July 30: The cold war, between the top two leaders in Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), party president K Chandrasekhar Rao and secretary general Vijayashanti took an interesting turn today with the latter meeting TRS rebel leader and former MLC Rehman.

Vijayashanti also met former TRS rebel and now Congress MLA T Jayaprakash Reddy. She was advised by both the leaders not to associate herself with the TRS president.

They both, who met her separately, explained to her their experiences with Chandrasekhar Rao and how non-trustworthy he is.

Two employees of APSHC swindle Rs 2.29 cr funds

Hyderabad, July 30: Two employees of Andhra Pradesh State Housing Corporation (APSHC) who allegedly misappropriated Rs 2.29 crore meant for the State sponsored Indiramma Housing Scheme, were arrested by the Central Crime Station (CCS) sleuths today.

The CCS had received a complaint from APSHC Managing Director R Subrahmanyam on July 7 in which he stated that some unknown persons had diverted a portion of funds meant for Indiramma Housing scheme.

‘Modi, 62 others can be interrogated till Dec 31’

Ahmedabad, July 30: The Supreme Court in a directive on Thursday said that Special Investigation Team can interrogate Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi till December 31st.

The SIT, which has been constituted by the apex court, is probing the cases surrounding the Gujarat riots which happened while the BJP-led Modi government was in power.

SC had directed the SIT to examine the complaint by Zakia Jaffery –widow of ex-MP Ehsaan Jaffrey and submit report in three months. The former Rajya Sabha MP was burnt alive in the communal riots of 2002.

Hyderabadi dies in accident in the UK

Hyderabad, July 30: Everytime Saroja talked to her UK-based son G Arvind Kumar, she would recall the string of attacks on Indians, particularly Hyderabadis, in Australia, and plead with him to return home.

Arvind would evade an answer wondering what would he do in Hyderabad. His reluctance proved fatal. The 28-year-old died in a road accident in the UK. Arvind, a manager at a leading super market in Reading, was driving to his place of work when another car rammed into his vehicle killing him on the spot.

Iranian election protesters face trial this week

Tehran, July 30: About 20 Iranians detained during protests over the disputed presidential election will face trial this weekend, on charges including bombings, carrying weapons and attacking security forces.

The trials were announced yesterday as anger grew even among some government supporters over abuse of those arrested.

Released prisoners have told of beatings and brutality during their detention. One said he was crammed with 200 others in a pitch-black cell as guards waded in and beat them. Others claimed they were forced to lick toilet bowls.
