Bangalore, July 28: President Nikolas Sarkozy, known to be a fitness enthusiast, was diagnosed with Near-Syncope on Sunday, after being rushed to hospital following a spell of dizziness. Doctors linked it to fatigue and exercise on a humid day.

“It is called Syncope when a person feels very giddy and loses consciousness. A near black out is called Near Syncope,” explains Dr Ravi Kishore, an electro-physiologist with the Syncope Clinic in Bangalore. President Sarkosy is in his 50s, but Syncope, according to Dr Kishore, can occur to a person in any age group.

President takes credit for farm loan waiver

New Delhi, July 28: In what has clearly created discomfort within the Congress and its partners, a presidential aide has credited UPA’s flagship farm loan waiver scheme to President Pratibha Patil.

Secretary to the President Christy Fernandez, while speaking at a function in Rashtrapati Bhavan on Friday, said that Patil was keenly interested in the welfare of farmers and that she was one of the prime movers of the idea of waving off farm loans.

Andhra govt may bid for gas blocks

Hyderabad, July 28: For the first time, a state government has decided to get into the oil and gas exploration business. The Andhra Pradesh government has decided to bid for exploration of natural gas in India’s largest- ever auction of oil and natural gas blocks, under the eighth edition of the New Exploration Licensing Policy NELP- VIII), which would be re- launched on August 8.

Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy has directed the officials concerned to work out the modalities for bidding, which would close by mid- October.

Cong again demands CBI probe into attack on Joshi’s house

Lucknow, July 28: The Congress Tuesday reiterated its demand for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the attack on the house of Uttar Pradesh party chief Rita Bahuguna Joshi, who was arrested July 15 for making derogatory remarks against Chief Minister Mayawati.

“If the probe is not ordered we will launch a statewide protest. We want to expose the Mayawati government on the issue of the state sponsored act of violence, corruption and misgovernance,” Akhilesh Pratap Singh, Congress spokesperson said.

Oz college dupes Indians pursuing aviation course

Melbourne, July 28: Fate of several Indian students enrolled in a Sydney-based aviation college have been left in limbo after their dreams of acquiring commercial pilot license remained unfulfilled even after paying thousands of dollars.

In a latest scam which came to light after ABC TV channel programme ‘Four Corners’ exposed migration and education agents duping Indian students, Aerospace Aviation college that provides commercial pilot training, it was alleged, exploited international students besides ill treating Indian students.

Lok Sabha adjourned after protests over price rise

New Delhi, July 28: The Lok Sabha was adjourned for half-an-hour Tuesday as opposition MPs demanded a discussion on the rise in prices of essential commodities. They had earlier held a sit-in outside Parliament on the same issue.

The lower house was adjourned till 11.30 am soon after it assembled, as members of the Left parties, Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), AIADMK and the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) demanded that the Question Hour be suspended and the price rise be discussed.

Himachal farmers spraying chemicals to ripen apples

Shimla, July 28: An apple a day may not keep the doctor away. Desperate farmers in Himachal Pradesh are resorting to ripening the juicy fruit with an overdose of chemicals that could harm the human body.

‘Most farmers in apple-growing states are under pressure from middlemen to ensure regular supply of apple much before its due time as early arrival is highly remunerative. For this, they start ripening the fruit well in advance by using certain chemicals,’ S.P. Bhardwaj, joint director at the Solan-based Dr Y.S. Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, told.

Obesity costs US health system $147 billion

Chicago, July 28: Obesity-related diseases account for nearly 10 percent of all medical spending in the United States or an estimated $147 billion a year, US researchers have said.

They said obese people spend 40 percent more — or $1,429 more per year — in healthcare costs than people of normal weight.

“It is critical that we take effective steps to contain and reduce the enormous burden of obesity on our nation,” Dr. Thomas Frieden, director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, told a news conference at a CDC obesity meeting where the study was presented.

Toxic chemical found in killer Bangladeshi drug

Dhaka, July 28: Bangladeshi authorities said Tuesday they had found traces of a toxic chemical in paracetamol syrup believed to have killed two dozen children in the past six weeks.

Health Minister A.F.M Ruhul Haq said investigators had found diethyl glycol in the locally produced syrup.

“We conducted two tests on the paracetamol syrup and each time we found diethyl glycol. It’s a toxic chemical used in the textile and leather dyeing industries. It damages your kidneys if you consume it,” the minister told AFP.

They said they were trying to find ways to improve testing for the cancer, one of the deadliest because it is so hard to detect before it has spread.

Eating soy cuts down risk of stroke

Sydney, July 28: Long-term consumption of soy products dramatically cuts down the risk of ischemic stroke, according to new research.

Ischemic stroke is the most common kind of stroke, caused by an interruption of the blood flow to the brain.

The research found people who consumed 50 grams of soy products a week reduced stroke risk. Those who ate between 50 to 300 grams of soy had a greater drop still, while those consuming 300 grams or more a week had the most health benefits.

Mumbai, July 28: The Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark Sensex rose by 80 points in the early trade on Tuesday on fresh capital inflows by foreign funds, boosted by encouraging quarter earnings by some blue-chip companies.

The 30-share index, which closed almost flat on Monday after highly volatile session, moved up by 79.32 points to 15,454.36 in early trade.

The wide-based National Stock Exchange index Nifty gained 23.50 points, or 0.50 per cent, at 4,595.80.

American al-Qaida sentenced to life for Bush plot

Washington, July 28: A US man who became an al-Qaida terrorist while attending college in Saudi Arabia and plotted to assassinate then-President George W Bush was defiant as he was sentenced to life in prison.

An appeals court had overturned the original 30-year sentence for Ahmed Omar Abu Ali, 28, who was born in Houston and grew up in the Washington suburb of Falls Church. He was convicted in 2005 of joining al-Qaida while studying in Saudi Arabia in 2002. Abu Ali met with top al-Qaida leaders in Saudi Arabia and discussed establishing a sleeper cell in the US.

26/11 attack: No proof, can’t arrest Saeed, says Pak

Islamabad, July 28: Pakistan has said it cannot arrest outlawed Jamaat-ud-Dawah chief Hafiz Mohammad Saeed, linked by India to the Mumbai terror attacks, since there is no proof of his involvement in the 26/11 assault.

Saeed will not be arrested merely on the basis of statements linking him to the attacks and the Indian government has been asked to provide proof of his involvement in any misdeeds, Pakistan’s Interior Minister Rehman Malik has said.

“We do not have any proof against Hafiz Saeed,” Malik told Geo News channel in an interview.

Contract killing bid foiled in Mohali

Chandigarh, July 28: An attempt to murder a Patiala-based agriculturist was foiled in Phase-XI here on Sunday evening. One of the four assailants, who was arrested, confessed that the gang was paid Rs 50,000 by a Patiala dairy owner to kill the agriculturist, Baldev Singh.

A resident of Zarikpur village in Patiala, Singh, was outside his relative Kuljinder Singh’s house in Phase-XI, when he was attacked by four assailants who first blinded him by throwing chilly powder in his eyes and later beat him up, investigating officer (IO) Harpreet Singh told Newsline.

Constable arrested for ‘raping’ 27-yr-old

Mumbai, July 28: The Colaba police on Saturday arrested a constable from the local arms branch for allegedly raping a 27-year-old woman. The accused has been identified as Deepak Chavan, 47.

According to the police, Chavan and the victim, a Borivili resident, were having a physical relationship since 2003 and he had promised to marry her. The problem was that he was already married and also had a child. However, he and his wife were separated since three years. She is currently staying Ahmedabad, the police said.

Mideast peace a ‘top priority’ for Obama, says US envoy

Cairo/Jerusalem, July 28: US special Middle East envoy George Mitchell Monday called on Israel, the Palestinians and Arab states to take steps to promote a comprehensive peace in the Middle East, calling it one of President Barack Obama’s ‘top priorities’.

‘We believe that a full, comprehensive peace presents the best way for all the people of the region to achieve the security, peace and prosperity all its citizens deserve,’ he told reporters in Cairo after meeting Egyptian President Hosny Mubarak and Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit.

Teen gang of cellphone snatchers held

Allahabad, July 28: The Allahabad police busted a gang of four teenagers involved in cellphone snatching on Monday.

The youths — Shekhar Prajapati, Prakash Mishra and Siddharth Prakash Tiwari and a minor — are from well-to-do families residing in Teliarganj area under Shivkuti police station. All are students of intermediate class.

Two bikes and 24 cellphones were recovered from their possession. They were caught from Buxibund area while they were about to sell the mobiles.

Mother says devil made her stab and decapitate her baby

Texas, July 28: Police found a three-week-old baby boy decapitated and stabbed in a Texas home and his mother “screaming that she killed her baby” after the devil told her to do it.

The mother, Otty Sanchez, 33, of San Antonio, was taken to hospital in a critical condition with self-inflicted stab wounds to her chest and stomach, said San Antonio police spokesman Joe Rios.

Investigators took a sword, a machete and a kitchen knife from the home.

Officers also found two children unharmed at the home, though it wasn’t immediately clear where they were taken.
