Mumbai, July 28: Infosys Technologies Ltd, India’s No. 2 software services exporter, said on Tuesday it had been selected by SABMiller to improve the in-store marketing campaigns of the world’s second-biggest brewer.
Financial details of the deal were not disclosed.

Mumbai, July 28: International Business Machines Corp plans to buy technology services company SPSS Inc for about $1.2 billion in cash, the companies said on Tuesday.
SPSS shareholders will receive $50 a share, a 42 percent premium to Monday’s closing price of $35.09 on Nasdaq.
Chicago-based SPSS provides predictive analytics software and services. Predictive analytics are used by companies to forecast future trends and spot shifts in consumer patterns, helping them control costs and use resources more wisely.

‘We have plans for providing the street vendors of the city with permanent platforms, proper roofs and water connections,’ Dikshit said while addressing hundreds of street vendors who had come from all over the country to attend the National conference on Integrating Vendors in Urban India.

Ankara, July 28: Iraq must do more to stop Kurdish rebels using hideouts in its territory to launch deadly attacks in Turkey, a Turkish minister said Monday after meeting with Iraqi and U.S. officials to discuss the issue.
“We always have greater expectations. We are after more solid results,” Interior Minister Besir Atalay said, regarding the attacks by rebels of the Kurdistan Workers Party, which the U.S. and European Union consider a terrorist organization.

Chidambaram is likely to make a statement in parliament on the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) probe into a 2006 sex scandal that created a storm in the Jammu and Kashmir assembly Tuesday with the PDP alleging that Chief Minister Omar Abdullah was also involved, officials here said.
As a political crisis gripped Jammu and Kashmir after Abdullah submitted his resignation, the CBI said it would not react immediately on whether his name figured in the case.

Patna, July 28: Putting to rest speculation over his entry to Parliament with the Congress support from Delhi, LJP president Ramvilas Paswan today declared that he would choose to go to Lok Sabha or Rajya Sabha “only from Bihar”.
“There is no substance in the speculation over my entry to Parliament with the backing of the Congress in Delhi. I will choose to go to either of the Houses of Parliament only from Bihar,” Paswan told reporters here.
Condemning yesterday’s lathicharge on an LJP procession here, he said the party workers would stage a sit-in here tomorrow in protest.
Dhaka, July 28: An Indian drug peddler found in possession of heroin has been jailed for life along with two Bangladeshis by a court in Khulna, a town in the west of the country.
A kg of the drug was seized from Indian national Tarak Debnath and his hosts, Alamgir Hossain and Jahangir Alam, in March last year, The Daily Star said Tuesday.
Debnath, who carried the heroin from India, was picked up from Alamgir’s house.
Illegal drugs are one of the more lucrative items smuggled across the 4,300 km border between Bangladesh and India.

Kabul, July 28: Fifteen people, among them a presidential campaign worker, were killed in three separate incidents in Afghanistan, officials said Tuesday.
In the eastern province of Laghman, a local election campaign official of presidential candidate Abdullah Abdullah was shot dead Tuesday morning by unidentified gunmen in Dawlat Shah district.
Rahm Khuda Mukhlis, the police chief of Dawlat Shah district, confirmed the attack on officials of Abdullah’s election campaign and said that one person was killed and two others were injured in this incident.
New Delhi, July 28: Government today said it was yet to take a decision on issuing identity cards to usual residents in the rest of the country.
Based on the experience of the pilot project on Multi- purpose National Identity Card, the government has proposed to create a National Population Register (NPR) in the country along with 2011 census, Minister of State for Home Ajay Maken told the Lok Sabha in a written reply.
Islamabad, July 28: Though on the run from the major Pakistani offensive, the retreating Taliban militants have carried out a gruesome beheading of a captured police official. The police found the decapitated body of a constable in a town in Swat valley, where for the last three months the Pakistan Army is carrying out a flushing operation against the Taliban, officials were quoted by TV channels as saying.
They said the police constable was kidnapped a week ago by militants. His corpse was found today with his head severed about four kilometres from Swat”s main town Mingora.
New Delhi, July 28: The Government has hiked the prize money for annual sporting honours, including Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna and Arjuna awards.
The Khel Ratna recipient will walk away with Rs 7.5 lakh this time, which is Rs 2.5 lakh more than the previous amount.
Those conferred with Dronacharya, Dhyanchand and Arjuna awards will each get Rs 2 lakh more from this year as their prize money has been increased to Rs 5 lakh, Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports, Pratik Prakashbapu Patil told the Lok Sabha today in a written reply to a question.
Dubai, July 28: President Asif Ali Zardari will visit Tajikistan from today to attend two regional summits.
During his two days visit President Asif Ali Zardari would meet Tajik president Enomali Rahman and discuss the matters related to expansion of bilateral trade ties between the two countries and import of electricity from Tajikistan to Pakistan.
A trilateral summit of Tajikistan, Pakistan and Afghanistan and a quadrilateral summit of Pakistan, Afghanistan, Tajikistan and Russia will be held during the visit.
New Delhi, July 28: Heavy rains in the national capital have claimed two lives, including a minor girl, as life came to a standstill in many parts of the city today due to record overnight showers which led to water logging in several areas resulting in chaotic traffic jams. The city has received a record 126 mm of rains till 8:30 am today since Sunday evening.
Islamabad, July 28: Three security personnel were injured when a suicide bomber rammed his explosive-laden vehicle into a check post in Pakistan”s restive North Waziristan tribal region today. The check post, located near Miranshah, the main town in North Waziristan Agency, was destroyed in the attack.
Three security personnel deployed at the post were injured by the blast, TV news channels reported. There was no official word on the incident.
Baghdad, July 28: U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates arrived in Baghdad for meetings Tuesday with Iraq’s political leaders, including Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, as well as Gen. Ray Odierno, the top U.S. commander there.
Gates flew to the capital after a stop in southern Iraq, where he got a firsthand look Tuesday at the future of the U.S. military mission.
Srinagar, July 28: Jammu and Kashmir Governor N.N. Vohra Tuesday accepted the resignation of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah after the opposition linked him to a 2006 sex scandal.
Abdullah submitted his resignation to the governor, who asked him to remain in office till a successor is sworn in. Abdullah became the chief minister of the National Conference-Congress coalition government in January 2009.

Mumbai, July 28: Terming rape allegations against Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) activists a conspiracy, party chief Raj Thackeray today said “efforts are on to misguide our youth and women voters ahead of Assembly polls”.
“This (rape allegation) is a conspiracy ahead of Assembly elections,” Raj said, addressing a meeting of party functionaries at Matunga in central Mumbai.
New Delhi, July 28: The recent accident at the Delhi Metro site in South Delhi that claimed six lives was caused by “serious deficiency” in design and inadequate concrete strength, Lok Sabha was informed today.
Following an enquiry, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has blacklisted the design consultancy firm for five years, debarred the structural consultant for two years and issued a show cause notice to M/S Gammon India asking why it should not be blacklisted for two years, Urban Development Minister S Jaipal Reddy said in the House.
