Seoul wants US to allow development of longer-range missiles

Seoul, July 07:South Korea wants to discuss the possibility of developing more powerful ballistic missiles with the US as a deterrent against North Korea, the national news agency Yonhap reported on Tuesday.

“I believe the issue can be discussed by working-level officials of the United States and South Korea,” South Korean Defence Ministry spokesman Won Tae-jae told the media in Seoul.

South Korea previously agreed not to build missiles with a range of over 300 kilometres capable of carrying warheads of more than 500 kilograms.

Interpol refuses to issue arrest warrant for Zelaya

Paris, July 07: The international police agency Interpol said Tuesday it has refused a request by Honduran authorities to issue an international arrest warrant for ousted President Manuel Zelaya. The Lyon-based agency said its Office of Legal Affairs concluded that the request was in contravention of Interpol’s constitution, which bans it from undertaking “any intervention or activities of a political, military, religious or racial character.”

Abbas is first Palestinian president to visit Serbia in 20 years

Belgrade, July 07: Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas was Tuesday to begin an official visit to Serbia, the first by a Palestinian leader in 20 years. Abbas, who was invited by Serbian counterpart Boris Tadic, would meet senior officials, including Tadic and Prime Minister Mirko Cvetkovic.

Serbian media reported that Abbas’ two-day visit was a form of “resetting” relations between Serbia and the Palestinians.

Abbas and his hosts would discuss the conflict in the Middle East, the plight of the Palestinians and the situation in the Balkans and the world.

UPA under attack from oppn on Rail budget

New Delhi, July 07: Government today came under a blistering attack from main opposition BJP which said Railway turnaround in the last five years was nothing but a financial “jugglery” similar to Satyam scam, a charge denied by former Railway Minister Lalu Prasad.

Both in the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, the BJP was in an offensive, seeking to corner the UPA government which presented its sixth Railway Budget on Friday last.

SC pulls up Maya govt on plea of transfer of cases:

New Delhi, July 07: The Supreme Court today pulled up the Mayawati government in Uttar Pradesh for seeking transfer to the apex court a batch of writ petitions pending in the Allahabad High Court relating to construction of memorials for B R Ambedkar and late BSP chief Kanshiram.

“The high court can pass any order. If you have any grievance you can come to us in an appeal but you cannot seek transfer of the case,” a bench of Justices B N Aggrawal and G S Singhvi observed.

The apex court said no motives can be attributed to the high court.

U.S. wants G8 to pledge $15 bln on food aid – draft text

Washington, July 07: The United States wants a G8 summit this week to commit $15 billion over a multi-year period for agricultural development in poor countries to fight food insecurity, according to a draft declaration seen by Reuters.

The declaration said Washington was ready to mobilise $3-4 billion over a multi-year period and wanted other partners to match that commitment to reach the $15 billion target.

Universities allowed to remove ‘deemed’ from name

New Delhi, July 07: The deemed universities have been allowed to remove ‘deemed’ from their name and identify themselves as universities, the government said today.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has approved the use of the word ‘university’ by such institutions, Minister of State for Higher Education D Purandeswari told the Rajya Sabha in a written reply.

The decision was taken following a recommendation in this regard by a committee comprising heads of UGC and All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) and a former Secretary of Higher Education.

Ramdev to challenge HC verdict legalising gay sex

New Delhi, July 07: Yoga guru Baba Ramdev will be approaching the Supreme Court tomorrow challenging the Delhi High Court judgement legalising gay sex among the consenting adults.

The petition is likely to be filed tomorrow, lawyers associated with Ramdev said.

Fire in MLA hostel, suburban college

Chennai, July 07: A minor fire broke out in the MLAs hostel here today, but was put out immediately by alert staff.

The fire, caused by an electrical short circuit, occurred in the ground floor of the G Block of the hostel. Staff of the hostel immediately swung into action, cut off the power supply and put out the fire with the help of fire extinguishers, police said.

Most of the MLAs were present in the assembly for the budget session when the fire broke out.

Actor Shiney Ahuja pleads for bail, police oppose

Mumbai, July 07: Terming the rape charge against him by his maid servant as “concocted”, incarcerated actor Shiney Ahuja pleaded for bail but the police opposed it saying the accused might intimidate her if he is released.

The prosecution as well as defence concluded their arguments and a sessions court is likely to give an order tomorrow.

“The victim’s story of the alleged rape seems highly doubtful and concocted…If she had resisted, then the actor would have had more injuries on his body. But Ahuja has only two scratches on his hand,” his lawyer Shrikant Shivade said.

Merkel to meet Chinese president on fringe of G8

Berlin, July 07: German Chancellor Angela Merkel will meet Chinese President Hu Jintao on the fringe of the Group of Eight summit in the Italian town of L’Aquila, German officials said Tuesday.

The clashes between security forces and ethnic minority Uighurs in China’s far western region of Xinjiang, which claimed more than 150 lives, are expected to be a topic of the talks, the officials said.

Merkel is expected to tell Hu of the need to allow ethnic minorities to maintain their cultural identities and traditions within the scope of a “one-China” policy.

NATO needs to clarify mission, says outgoing chief de Hoop Scheffer

Washington, July 07: NATO members need to reach consensus on which threats tie them together as they look toward the future, said outgoing Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer Tuesday.

“NATO cannot thrive as an organization which is trying to take care of too many individual threats at the same time, becoming a sort of jack of all trades, but master of none,” he said.

Constable arrested for taking bribe

Jaipur, July 07: A head constable of Rajasthan Police was arrested today in Pali district for taking bribe, officials said. Jawan Singh, posted as the head constable at Badagudha outpost under Bagdinagar police station, was allegedly asking a bribe of Rs 500 from one Sura Ram in lieu of submitting a chargesheet against one Bhanwar Lal, against whom the former had filed a case, they said.

A team of the Anti-Corruption Bureau today arrested Singh taking the bribe from Ram, they added.

Mamata making railways East India Company: BJP

New Delhi, July 07: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Tuesday asked Railways Minister Mamata Banerjee ‘not to make Indian Railways an East India Company’ and alleged that the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government has favoured West Bengal at the cost of many other states in the rail budget.

‘India is not (West) Bengal. 109 adarsh (ideal) stations out of 309 have gone to Bengal (which is in the east). What is going to happen to the rest of the country? Don’t make the railways an East India Company,’ said BJP leader Ananth Kumar during discussion on railway budget in the Lok Sabha.

Govt rejects Varun’s plea for more security

New Delhi, July 07: Government today rejected BJP Hindutva poster boy Varun Gandhi’s plea for more security and also dismissed his mother, Maneka Gandhi’s allegation in a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh that the Home Ministry had adopted a “lackadaisical” approach to threats to his life.

Sources in Union Home Ministry said that the 29-year-old Varun Gandhi was special Y category protectee (three PSO’s round the clock, one escort and pilot vehicle) and after various reviews, the arrangement was found adequate.

Govt probing spurt in deemed universities: Sibal

New Delhi, July 07: The government is probing the “spurt” in permissions granted for setting up deemed universities and examining whether they are following the norms laid down for them, Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Kapil Sibal said today.

“We have set up a committee. We want to make sure the deemed universities are following the norms. We are carrying out a review,” Sibal said during question hour in the Rajya Sabha.

Five youths arrested with fake notes in Delhi

New Delhi, July 07: Delhi Police on Tuesday claimed to have busted a gang comprising five youths who allegedly smuggled fake currency from Pakistan and recovered counterfeit notes with a face value of Rs 10.57 lakh.

The arrested youths allegedly smuggled the fake notes from from Pakistan via plane, train or bus, Deputy police Commissioner (Crime) Neeraj Thakur said.
