Woman constable murdered at home

Punjab, June 24: A woman constable of Punjab Home Guards was stabbed to death, allegedly by her uncle, at her house in Kila Mohalla on Tuesday afternoon. The accused was caught by area residents as he tried to flee after the crime.

Constable Neelam Rani (36) was posted at the Division Number 8 police station. Mother of a 17-year-old son, she was reportedly separated from her husband.

‘India, US to take relationship to a new level’

Washington, June 24: Describing US as a natural economic partner of India, a top Indian envoy here has said that both the nations are committed to take bilateral relations to a new level.

Indian Ambassador to the US, Meera Shankar described the transformation that the Indo-US bilateral relationship had witnessed in recent years and highlighted the complementaries and convergences in the ties.

Saudi health ministry’s plan to combat swine flu in offing

Riyadh, June 24: As part of the ongoing urgent measures to combat swine flu, Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Health is set to present a comprehensive precautionary plan to the Royal Court for final approval.

The ministry has also constituted an extensive scientific committee to take up urgent steps within the coming fortnight. This was disclosed by Dr. Khaled Al Zahrani, assistant undersecretary for preventive medicine at the ministry.

No love lost between Mousavi and Khamenei

Tehran, June 24: Iran’s economy stood in shambles and its international status was at a nadir. Disturbed by the leadership of then-President Ali Khamenei, Prime Minister Mir Hussain Mousavi wrote him a letter and threatened to resign, according to news accounts at the time.

Today, Mousavi, 67, finds himself again facing off against Khamenei, now the country’s spiritual leader, as the figurehead of a surprise reform movement.

Dubai residents gather to mourn for Neda

Dubai, June 24: Close to one thousand Iranian residents gathered in Dubai for a silent candle-lit vigil to mourn the killing of Neda Agha Sultan, the woman who has become the symbol of the movement contesting the Iranian presidential election results.

The group gathered on the beach next to the Hilton hotel in Jumeirah Beach Residence holding candles and posters. While most of the posters showed pictures of Neda, few were of political slogans calling for Iran’s “freedom.”

Continuing attacks claim 30 lives in Iraq

Baghdad, June 24: Bombings and shootings killed more than 30 people across Iraq, including high school students on their way to final exams, as a wave of violence swept the country ahead of next week’s deadline for US troops to withdraw from urban areas.

The attacks pushed the three-day Iraqi death toll over 100, shattering a recent lull and adding fresh doubt to the ability of government forces to protect civilians without US soldiers by their sides.

American combat troops have already begun moving from inner-city outposts to large bases outside Baghdad and other cities.

Mob fury after Delhi woman alleges rape by policemen

New Delhi, June 24: A woman has alleged she was gang raped by five policemen, including an officer, inside a police station in southwest Delhi, but the cops refused to register a complaint. This prompted an irate mob to pelt the police station with stones on Tuesday.

The woman, who resides in a slum cluster nearby, alleged that the station house officer (SHO) of Inderpuri along with four other policemen raped her inside the police station on Monday. The SHO has been temporarily relieved of his duty, police said.

Ramallah, June 24: Critics accused Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad of exceeding his mandate and challenging President Mahmoud Abbas by declaring a goal of statehood within two years.

Court awards reality show winner a day in jail due to Drunk driving

Mumbai, June 24: Ten days after the traffic police arrested Bigg Boss and MTV Roadies winner Ashutosh Kaushik for drunken driving, the metropolitan magistrate’s court on Tuesday sentenced him to a day’s simple imprisonment.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs 3100 on him and suspended his driving licence for two years.

Nun identifies main accused

Bhubaneswar, June 24: In a major development in the Kandhamal nun rape case, the victim nun has identified the main accused in a test identification parade, the second such parade related to the case.

According to the officials, the first TIP was held at Cuttack on January 5 where the victim had identified two youths.

Though the CB arrested seven more accused persons in the rape case since a month, it could not conduct the TIP as the victim was reluctant to visit Kandhamal again.

Bal Thackeray discharged from hospital

Mumbai, June 24: Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray, admitted to Lilavati Hospital six days ago, was on Tuesday discharged after his condition improved.

Thackeray’s health has improved and doctors attending on him decided to discharge him, Sena sources said. The 82-year-old leader was shifted out of ICU on June 21.

Immediately after leaving the hospital, he was driven to his residence Matoshree in suburban Bandra.

Thackeray was admitted to hospital on June 18 for breathlessness and blood pressure-related issues.

Indians among highest visa rule breachers in Australia

Melbourne, June 24: Indian students have been placed in the high risk group for visa breaches in Australia along with Bangladeshis and Cambodians, a development that may result in tightening of immigration rules for them.

Based on a review of the student visa programme by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship across all applicant countries, Indians were bracketed with Bangladeshis and Cambodians as a ‘level-four’ risk, which is the second highest risk category.

Computer failure may have caused D.C. train crash

Washington, June 24: Investigators looking into the deadly crash of two Metro transit trains focused Tuesday on why a computerized system failed to halt an oncoming train, even though there is evidence that the operator tried to slow it down.

At the time of the crash, the train was also operating in automatic mode, meaning it was controlled primarily by computer. In that mode, the operator’s main job is to open and close the doors and respond to emergencies.
