Jama Masjid blast: Judicial custody of six accused extended

New Delhi, January 05 : A court here Thursday extended till Jan 19 the judicial custody of six accused in the 2010 Jama Masjid firing and blast in which two foreigners were injured.

Police told the court that they were awaiting the forensic report of bullet shells found at the site of September 2010 incident.

Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Vinod Yadav asked police about the forensic report of the articles recovered from the place of incident. The police replied that the report was awaited.

‘Kalam frisking was a blunder’

New Delhi, January 05 (IANS) India Thursday said the frisking of former president A.P.J. Abdul Kalam at New York’s JFK Airport was a “blunder” and it would not accept the violation of any rules that exempted certain dignitaries.

Speaking at a function here, Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai said the US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) was willing to send an official to apologise, but the “former president was an extremely gracious person” and the matter was closed.

Woman gives birth on plane

Shanghai, January 04 :A Chinese woman gave birth to a baby girl on a flight from southwest Sichuan province to Wuhan.

The young female crew members trained to handle in-flight childbirth came to her help, China Eastern Airlines said.

Feng Yu, who was near the end of her term, felt the first contractions around 9 a.m. The 23-year-old’s baby weighed three kg.

On landing, medical workers boarded the plane and took Feng and the baby to a nearby hospital. “Both the mother and baby are in good condition,” a doctor told Shanghai Daily.

Pakistan repatriates over 3.7 mn Afghan refugees

Islamabad, January 04: Over 3.7 million Afghan refugees have been sent back to their homeland from Pakistan in the last decade, the UN refugees agency said Wednesday.

Between March 2002 and December 2011, over 37,31,000 Afghan refugees were sent back to their country through the repatriation centres in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan provinces, Xinhua reported quoting the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

Breakthroughs in Rajasthan nurse case, two held

Jodhpur/Pune, January 04: In two major breakthroughs in the missing nurse Bhanwari Devi case, the leader of a gang suspected to have disposed off her body was arrested in Maharashtra while a man believed to be the owner of a jeep used to dispose the body was nabbed in Rajasthan, police and sources said Wednesday.

Pune police in a joint operation with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested Bishnaram Bishnoi in Lonavala, 70 km from Pune.

Ajmer sex scandal accused remanded in judicial custody

Ajmer, January 04: Saiyed Saleem Chishty, arrested Tuesday in connection with the infamous 1992 Ajmer sex scandal case in which over 100 schoolgirls were blackmailed on the basis of their photographs in compromising positions, was remanded in two-day police custody by a court here Wednesday, officials said.

“Chishty was produced in the court of additional chief judicial magistrate Wednesday. The court has remanded him in judicial custody till Jan 5,” a senior police officer told IANS.

2011 setback year for Modi: Court Verdicts

Ahmedabad, January 04: The year 2011 will be remembered in Gujarat for verdicts related to the Godhra train burning incident and the riots that followed.

A trial court awarded death penalty to 11 people and life imprisonment to 20, nine years after the incident in which 59 people, mostly karsevaks died. The carnage triggered riots in the state killing over 1,000 people, mostly Muslims.

Another major verdict came in one of the post-Godhra riots case of Sardarpura village in Mehsana district where the special court sentenced 31 people to life imprisonment.

Over 1,62,000 civilian killed in Iraq

Baghdad,January 04 :About 162,000 people, almost 80% of them civilians, have been killed in Iraq from the start of the 2003 US-led invasion up to withdrawal of American forces in 2011, a British NGO has said.

Iraq Body Count (IBC) warned that, contrary to apparent trends in figures released by the Iraqi government, the level of violence has changed little from mid-2009.

The organisation, however, revealed that attacks were markedly down from when the country was in the throes of sectarian war in 2006 and 2007, The Sydney Morning Herald reports.

US tourist trashed for kissing women on New year eve ?

Tuticorin January 01: Three US tourists indulging in New Year’s revelry were injured when local public thrashed them after they allegedly hugged and kissed women passers-by in an inebriated state here, police said today.

The three men from California were injured when the public assaulted and threw stones at them last night. Two of them, later handed over to the police, have been hospitalised while another managed to flee the scene, police said adding they were in their late 40s.

Hospital sources said the two had suffered bruises and concussions and were under treatment.

Baby dies every Hour in MALDA ?

Malda,December 25 : The horror of crib deaths is back to haunt Malda district hospital. On Thursday night, six newborns died in the hospital within six hours.

The babies were aged between 1 and 70 days. Apart from one, all were born in the hospital itself. Hospital authorities claimed that a severe cold wave along with ailment since birth was the reason behind the babies’ death. Worse, 50 more children suffering due to the cold are battling for their lives. The mercury touched 8.8°C in Malda on Friday.
