Raja Choudhary arrested for drunken brawl

Jaipur, Febuary 03: Rajasthan police Friday arrested small screen actor Raja Choudhary for getting into a brawl with the security guards of a private hospital under the influence of alcohol, said an official.

Choudhary, who became a familiar name after his appearance in the popular reality show “Big Boss 2”, is accused of “disruption of peace”.

He came here from Delhi Thursday and was staying at a relative’s house in Chitrakoot area.

Indian-American student triggers Harvard probe

Washington, Febuary 03: A complaint from an Indian-American student who was near the top of his high school class but was rejected by both Harvard and Princeton universities has triggered an investigation by the US Education Department.

The unnamed Indian-American student in California complained that the two universities discriminate against Asian-Americans in undergraduate admissions, according to a media Bloomberg report.

According to the Education Department’s Office of Civil Rights the complaint was received Aug 22 and the allegations “accepted for investigation” Jan 11.

Baby Falak off ventilator,unconscious

New Delhi, Febuary 03:Two-year-old Falak, who has been battling for life after being battered and beaten, has been taken off the ventilator though she continues to be critical and is still unconscious, doctors at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) said Friday.

“Her condition has shown slight improvement. We took her off the ventilator Friday morning,” Deepak Agrawal, associate professor of neurosurgery at the AIIMS trauma centre, told IANS.

“Her blood parameters are showing that the infection might be responding to the drugs,” he added.

Homosexuality fine on Russian city

Moscow, February 03: A city legislature in a central Russian town has approved a bill that will penalise people with fines for promoting homosexuality.

The bill, pushed by the pro-Kremlin United Russia party, was backed by 28 out of 35 deputies in Kostroma town’s legislature.

A similar ban is already in place in the southern Astrakhan and central Ryazan regions but it was shelved in St. Petersburg, Russia’s second city, last November after MPs failed to agree on its “legal definitions”.

$3 bn treasure found British shipwreck

London, February 02: A treasure hunter claims to have located the wreck of a bombed British merchant ship containing platinum bars worth $3 billion, media reports said.

If the theory is right, the ship, which was torpedoed by the Germans in World War II, could be one of the richest sunken treasure troves ever discovered.

Greg Brooks, of Sub Sea Research in Gorham, Maine, this week announced the wreck, sitting in 700 feet of water 50 miles off Cape Cod, Massachusetts, is that of the S.S. Port Nicholson, Daily Mail reported Thursday.

Student injured cellphone battery explodes

Kendrapara,Feburary 02: An eleven-year-old school student suffered burns when an old cell phone battery burst at a school compound in Odisha’s Kendrapara district today. The accident took place during mid-day meal break when the 6th standard student, Seikh Vekka, was playfully tossing the battery near the government-run Bahakuda upper primary school in Mahakalapada area, about 50 km from here, police said. A loud noise like that of a cracker burst was heard triggering panic in the school premises, the police said. No other student was injured. The boy sustained burns on forehead and chest.

Pressure on Chidambaram to quit

New Delhi, February 02: With the Supreme Court leaving it to the trial court to decide on probe against Home Minister P Chidambaram in 2G case, BJP today demanded his resignation till the matter is settled.

“… He (Chidambaram) is fully involved in the entire scam and he has two days’ reprieve. But issue of probity in public life demands that either Chidambaram puts in his papers on his own, or if he refuses to do so, the Prime Minister must recommend to the President to sack him from the government

with immediate effect,” BJP leader Balbir Punj said here.

2 IAS sent to police custody

Kolkata, Febuary 02: Two Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officers arrested for alleged involvement in a multi-crore iron ore export scam were sent to police custody Thursday.

Debaditya Chakraborty, a former managing director of the West Bengal Essential Commodities Supply Corp (WBECSC), and R.N. Jamir, an ex-director general, would be in police custody till Feb 4, the chief metropolitan magistrate said.

Jamir is now retired while Chakraborty has been put on compulsory waiting.

The duo were arrested Wednesday for their alleged involvement in the over Rs.220 crore scam of 2004.

New Delhi, Febuary 02 : The Supreme Court ruling on the 2G scam may have provided him a breather. But Home Minister P. Chidambaram, facing unending flak since 2009, is still not out of danger zone in the case.

For a politician who has seen meteoric rise, there seem to be no end to troubles dogging him since the Congress returned to power three years ago.

On Thursday, the Supreme Court, while cancelling 122 2G licences, left the decision of probing the role of Chidambaram — who was then finance minister — in the case to a separate trial court.

Lucknow, January 30: Congress general secretary Rashid Alvi declared here Monday that Rahul Gandhi’s rise to the prime minister’s chair in 2014 was a forgone conclusion.

He was reacting to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesman Ravi Shankar Prasad’s sarcastic remark, daring Rahul to become prime minister as that would expose his capabilities.

“We are glad that realisation has finally dawned on the BJP that the Congress is all set to again return to power in 2014, and Rahul will become prime minister,” Alvi said at a press conference here.

BP Acharya home secretary arrested in Emaar case

Hyderabad, January 30 :Lanco hills wakf land scamster and AP home secretary BP Acharya was arrested today. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Monday arrested Andhra Pradesh Home Secretary B.P. Acharya for alleged corruption in the Emaar-APIIC township case.

The top bureaucrat was later presented in a court here, which sent him to CBI custody for two days.

Acharya was arrested by the CBI officials in the afternoon after they questioned him since morning at Dilkusha guest house, the camp office of the investigating agency.

Baby Falak undergoes brain surgery, still critical

New Delhi, January 30: Battling for life at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), two-year-old battered and abandoned baby Falak underwent brain surgery to remove fluids even as she developed respiratory problems, a doctor said. The baby has been put on ventilator.

“We have done a small brain surgery to remove fluids from her brain. We suspect that there could be infection in her brain. The fluids will be sent for lab test,” Deepak Agrawal, assistant professor (neurosurgery) at the J.P.N. All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Trauma Centre, said.

Osama raid Paki mole ?

Washington, January 29 : Defence secretary Leon Panetta acknowledged publicly for the first time that a Pakistani doctor provided key information to the US in advance of the successful Navy SEAL assault on Osama bin Laden’s compound last May.

Panetta told CBS’s 60 Minutes, in a programme to be broadcast tomorrow, that Shakil Afridi helped provide intelligence for the raid on Osama’s compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan.
