Two held for raping Kolkata woman in moving car

Two people were arrested Saturday for raping a 37-year-old Anglo-Indian woman, mother of two and a former call centre employee, in a moving car after offering her a lift here earlier this month, police said.

“We have arrested Rahman Khan alias Tusi and Sumit Bajaj,” said Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Damayanti Sen. They were arrested from Howrah station area. The two Kolkata residents were held while fleeing from the city.

“We are interrogating them. We are also trying to apprehend some other persons who have been identified,” she said.

Iran to hold military drill Sunday

Iran will conduct military drills Sunday, Xinhua reported.

Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) commander of ground forces Brig. Gen. Mohammad Pakpour said the drills will be conducted in a desert in central Iran.

The drills, code-named Valfajr, are aimed at enhancing combat preparedness of the IRGC forces, the Mehr news agency quoted Pakpour as saying Saturday.

Azhar faces warrant in cheque bounce case

A Delhi court Saturday issued non-bailable warrant against former Indian cricket team captain and MP Mohammed Azharuddin for not appearing in court on the day of final verdict in a cheque-bounce case, a lawyer said.

Metropolitan Magistrate Vikrant Vaid issued non-bailable warrant against Azhar, whose counsel Firoj Khan Ghazi said that he was busy campaigning in Uttar Pradesh for the ongoing assembly elections.

The court would next hear the case March 1.

According to complainant Sanjay Solanki, he helped Azhar in a deal to purchase a property in Bandra in Mumbai for Rs.1.5 crore.

Man chops off ex-wife’s nose for remarriage

A man allegedly chopped off the nose of his ex-wife in Rajasthan’s Chittorgarh district, police said today.

The accused Suresh was apparently enraged as the woman had married again, they said.

Suresh along with around six other men barged into the house of the victim in Choti Sadadi area and chopped off her nose, police said.

No arrest has been made so far.

Odisha gang rape: Activists demand women panel chief’s sacking

Social and political activists Saturday staged a demonstration demanding dismissal of state women panel chairperson Jyoti Panigrahi for ruling out rape in her report on an alleged gang rape victim.

The activists, comprising members of opposition parties and members of civil society and women’s organisations, demonstrated near the official residence of Governor M.C.Bhandare.

Sasikala’s husband Natarajan arrested

The husband of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa’s former confidante Sasikala was arrested here Saturday on a land grab charge here, police said.

According to police, M. Natarajan was arrested here on a complaint lodged by Ramalingam of Thanjavur, 325 km from Chennai. A police team from Thanjavur arrested Natarajan and took him there.

As per the complaint, some men — allegedly at the instigation of Natarajan — occupied land measuring around 10,000 sq ft in Thanjavur belonging to Ramalingam and threatened him when he had asked them to vacate the land.

Pakistan mosque blast toll reaches 36

The toll in a suicide blast at a mosque in northwest Pakistan rose to 36 Saturday after six more people succumbed to their injuries.

The explosion took place Friday afternoon in Parachinar city in Kurram Agency, bordering Afghanistan. Dozens of people were injured.

The attacker rammed his explosive-laden vehicle into a mosque when Shia Muslims were offering Friday prayers.

A faction of the militant Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), TTP Islahi, has claimed responsibility for the attack, Xinhua quoted Geo TV as saying.

Italy impounds fake US bonds worth $6 tn

Italian police have confiscated counterfeit US state bonds worth $6 trillion, media reports said Friday.

The operation was sanctioned by the prosecutor’s office of the southern Italian city of Potenza and was the result of an investigation initiated a year ago by the Potenza prosecutor and Swiss authorities.

The false securities supposedly issued by the US Fed in 1934 were confiscated in a Swiss company based in Zurich in January but it became known only recently.

The police also detained eight people on suspicion of creating a company for international financial fraud.

25 killed in Pakistan suicide blast

At least 25 people were killed and over 50 others were injured in a suicide blast that hit a mosque Friday in Pakistan’s northwest tribal Kurram Agency that borders Afghanistan, media reports said.

The attack took place at about 1.50 p.m. local time when a suicide bomber rammed an explosive-laden vehicle into a mosque located near a market place in Parachinar city in Kurram Agency, Xinhua reported citing Urdu TV channel Express.

A large number of people were offering Friday prayers inside the mosque when the blast took place.

34 militants killed in Pakistan

Pakistani security forces killed some 34 militants Friday in the country’s northwest tribal areas along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border Friday, media reports said.

At least 17 militants were killed Friday night by the Pakistani security forces in the Tera Valley area of Khyber Agency which borders Afghanistan, Xinhua reported citing Urdu TV channel Dunya.

Meanwhile, at least three security personnel were killed and two injured when a remote-controlled bomb hit security forces’s vehicle in the same area Friday night.

US drone strikes kill 11 in Pakistan

Islamabad Eleven people were killed in US drone attacks in northwest Pakistan Thursday.

Seven people died when drones targeted a militant hideout in Miransha of North Waziristan. Four more were killed when missiles hit a vehicle suspected of carrying militants in Mir Ali area of North Waziristan, Xinhua quoted the local ARY TV as saying.

India may allow Pakistani investments

In a major step forward towards normalising business ties, the Indian government plans to bring changes in the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) to allow investments from Pakistan, a senior government official said Thursday.

“Commerce ministry has sent a proposal to the finance ministry for change in FEMA rules to allow investments from Pakistan,” said a senior official who is accompanying Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma on his official trip here.

Pakistan is the only country from where investment is not allowed in India.

BCCI gives in, Sahara India back as Team India sponsor

45 percent voting in Mumbai civic polls

In a show of voter apathy, Mumbai Thursday marked a turnout of 45 percent in elections to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). In all the 10 Maharashtra municipal corporations, where voting took place during the day, the average voter turnout was around 54 percent, official sources said here.

A total of 3.5 crore voters were registered to elect 1,244 councillors, including 624 women, in Mumbai, Thane, Ulhasnagar, Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Solapur, Nashik, Akola, Amravati and Nagpur municipal corporations.

Delhi has highest per capita income

The capital has the the highest per capita income in the country recorded at Rs.1,16,886 in 2009-10.

“The per capita income of Delhi during 2009-10 was Rs.1,16,886, which is also the highest among all states and union territories,” stated the report titled “Level and Pattern of Household Consumer Expenditure in Delhi.”

The report also reveals that monthly per capita expenditure of 51 percent of the total household in Delhi is Rs.2,501 and above.
