Seven killed in Afghan clashes against Quran burning

Seven people were killed in Afghanistan in continuing clashes between Afghan security forces and protesters over the burning of the Quran by US soldiers, the Afghan interior ministry said Thursday.

The protests began Tuesday when agitated Afghans took to the streets Tuesday shortly after Afghan workers noticed US soldiers at the Bagram airbase dumping books, including four copies of the Quran, in a bin for burning garbage, RIA Novosti reported.

16 army soldiers killed in north Kashmir avalanches

Sixteen Indian Army soldiers were killed in two avalanches overnight in two districts of north Kashmir, an army officer said Thursday.

“Thirteen bodies have been recovered so far from the avalanche debris in Dawar (Gurez) area of Bandipora district. Three soldiers are still believed to be under the debris. Efforts are on to locate them,” a defence spokesman told IANS.

A massive rescue operation was started after an avalanche struck the workshop of the army’s brigade headquarters in Dawar (Gurez) overnight.

Ash daughter will be named Abhilasha ?

If the word on the street is to be believed, actors Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s newborn is likely to be named Abhilasha. A tweet from author Shobhaa De sparked off speculation on the name of the baby girl.

De tweeted: “Beti B to be named Abhilasha? That’s a stroke of genius. Well done,parents. Abhi and Ash. Truly inspired, if true.” The news has not been confirmed yet by any one from the Bachchan clan. But it did not stop people on Twitter from sharing the news, most retweeting De’s cryptic tweet which does not specifically confirm the news.

President Son questioned for 1 crore cash seized

The Amravati police on Tuesday questioned Congress MLA and son of President Pratibha Patil, Rajendra Shekhawat, in connection with the Rs 1 crore seized from a vehicle coming from Congress MLA and Minister Rajendra Mulak’s house in Nagpur.

According to Commissioner of Police Amitesh Kumar, Shekhawat accepted the fact that the money belonged to Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) and was meant for election expenses of Congress candidates in Amravati’s recent municipal corporation polls.

Domestic violence now crime in Pakistan

Pakistan’s parliament today passed a landmark bill that makes violence against women and children a criminal offence and carries prison terms and fines.

Under the Domestic Violence (Prevention and Protection) Bill, that was passed by the Senate today, those found guilty of beating women or children will face a minimum prison sentence of six months and a fine of at least 100,000 rupees, the Dawn daily reported.

The bill was introduced by Senator Nilofar Bakhtiar and was passed unanimously by the upper house of parliament.

Quran burning angers Afghan,US a mistake

About 2500 Afghan protesters were gathered outside the airfield’s main gate, the ISAF official said, but there were no reports of further unrest.

Local citizens who work at the base discovered the material that had been put into a burn pit by NATO personnel and alerted officials.

Soon after, demonstrators massed outside the base, chanting “Death to America! Death to the Afghan government! Long live Islam!”

As a NATO helicopter circled overhead and black smoke billowed from the ground, men shook their fists in anger. Several men launched slingshots in the direction of the base.

Immediately remove Urdu council director, government told

The Delhi High Court Tuesday directed the government to immediately remove Mohammed Hamidullah Bhat as director of the National Council for Promotion of Urdu Language (NCPUL).

A bench of Justice Vipin Sanghi also sought Bhat’s personal appearance to explain the reasons for non-compliance of the court order dated Dec 9 while restraining him from holding the office.

On Dec 9 last year, a division Bench of Acting Chief Justice A. K. Sikri and Justice Rajiv Sahai Endlaw held that Bhat could not head NCPUL because he was overage and faced a corruption case.

Jats remain defiant, trains affected in parts of Haryana

Leaders of the Jat community in Haryana and their supporters remained defiant Tuesday, saying they would intensify their agitation for job quotas in Haryana from Wednesday and also extend it to other states.

Train services were affected in Hisar, Bhiwani and Rewari districts of the state as railway authorities cancelled some trains and terminated others as Jat protesters continued to block the railway track at Mayyar village in this district for the second consecutive day.

Investigators probing the Feb 13 bombing on an Israeli embassy car are tracking a possible Bangladeshi terror link to the attack blamed by Israel on Iran, sources said Tuesday.

Highly placed intelligence and diplomatic sources said two calls were made to a cellphone in New Delhi from a suspected satellite phone in Bangladesh’s Cox’s Bazar.

They said the cellphone, which received the satellite calls on the day of the blast and another a week earlier, has been switched off soon after the attack that injured four people, including a diplomat’s wife.

Rapists of ‘willing’ girl survive tough punishment

Two rapists in Britain escaped harsh punishment after the judge observed their 11-year-old victim was “willing”. The duo, however, received 40 months in jail.

Roshane Channer and Ruben Monteiro, both 21, attacked the girl while a third person filmed the act. The duo claimed in the court that the victim looked at least 14 and the judge agreed, the Sun reported.

Judge David Farrell (QC) said: “Despite her age it is accepted she was a willing participant.”

Buffaloes to walk the ramp in Haryana

Touted as the first of its kind in the world, a pageant will be held in Haryana’s Jind town Wednesday where a popular breed of buffaloes will walk a special ramp.

The show, ‘Murrah on Ramp’, is being organised by Haryana Animal Husbandry and Dairying department at Arjun Stadium in Jind, 180 km from here.

The Murrah breed of buffaloes is popular in Haryana’s rural areas for their high milk yield.

A department spokesman said that Murrah buffaloes which had won prizes in the exhibitions at the national and international level would take part in the event.

India, Pakistan extend nuke accidents risks accord

India and Pakistan Tuesday announced a five-year extension of their agreement on reducing the mutual risk from nuclear weapons accidents.

“Both countries have agreed to extend the agreement for another period of five years. The existing validity was up to Feb 20, 2012,” India’s external affairs ministry said in a statement here.

The validity was extended in accordance with Article 8 of the Agreement on Reducing the Risk from Accidents Relating to Nuclear Weapons signed by the two nuclear-armed neighbours on Feb 21, 2007.

Bulava missile dangerous for Russia: Experts

Russian experts have questioned how wise it was to adopt the troubled Bulava intercontinental missile for service, suggesting it would cause more security problems than it would solve.

According to the Kommersant daily, first deputy defence minister Alexander Sukhorukov said a presidential decree putting the missile into operation has been drafted and was ready to be signed.

However, military analyst Viktor Baranets said it was a “reckless” and “dangerous” move since the missile was underdeveloped.

Kudankulam Nuclear plant, protesters announce fast

A two-member team from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) carried out a detailed inspection at Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KNPP) even as the anti-plant protesters announced a 72-hour fast from Monday to protest a clean chit by a state government panel.

“The two member IAEA team is carrying out inspection of the nuclear material in KNPP. The team would account meticulously the amount of nuclear material received and stored,” Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) chairman and managing director S.K. Jain told IANS.

Oil goes up,Iran halts exports to EU

Iran will cut oil exports to other EU countries if their “hostile actions” continue, the deputy oil minister who heads the state oil company said on Monday, a day after Tehran halted sales to France and Britain.

Exports to Spain, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Germany and the Netherlands would be stopped, Ahmad Qalebani was quoted as saying by Mehr news agency.

“Certainly if the hostile actions of some European countries continue, the export of oil to these countries will be cut,” said Qalebani, who runs the National Iranian Oil Company.

Mumbai police are likely to file a charge sheet against woman journalist Jigna Vora Tuesday in the murder of senior scribe J. Dey who was shot dead in June last year, an official said here.

“We are likely to file a supplementary charge sheet against Vora tomorrow (Tuesday). We have gathered enough evidence against her to make a case,” Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) Devendra Bharti told IANS.
