The nation-wide strike against government’s “anti-labour” policies had little impact on normal life in Delhi today though functioning of PSU banks was affected and a number of autos and taxi drivers kept their vehicles off the roads.

Commuters complained that frequency of state-run buses was low as the 24-hour strike called by all major unions to protest the “anti-labour” policies of the government, rising prices and disinvestment of PSUs began this morning.

Fullest consideration’ to Muhammad Yunus for World Bank chief’s post: US

The US will give “fullest consideration” to the candidature of Nobel Laureate economist Muhammad Yunus for the World Bank presidency if he wants to head the multilateral agency, American Ambassador to Bangladesh Dan Mozena said here today.

“If he agrees (to be a candidate for the World Bank presidency), he will be given fullest consideration,” US Ambassador Dan Mozena told newsmen on the sidelines of a function in northwestern Rajshahi.

The envoy, however, did not elaborate further.

UP polls: 60 percent turnout in MJ(Muslim-Jat) belt

The high stakes battle for power in Uttar Pradesh entered the last lap Tuesday with 60 percent peaceful voting in the sixth and penultimate round of the assembly elections that end next week.

The turnout among the 2.11 crore voters was in keeping with the high percentage in the last five rounds. Polling in 68 constituencies across 13 districts in western Uttar Pradesh had begun at 7 a.m. and ended at 5 p.m.

“Today appears to be more like the first phase when polling crossed the 60 per cent mark”, state chief electoral officer Umesh Sinha told IANS in Lucknow at the close of balloting.

Sonia goes abroad for ‘routine check-up’, to US

Congress president Sonia Gandhi has gone abroad for a “routine check-up”, nearly six months after surgery in the US, and is expected to return in four-five days, a senior party leader said here Tuesday.

“Congress president Sonia Gandhi has travelled abroad for a routine check-up after six months of earlier treatment. She will return in four-five days,” party general secretary Janardan Dwivedi Dwivedi said here.

Party sources said that Sonia Gandhi left for the check-up Monday night.

Girl shot dead by father for ‘honour’

A 16-year-old girl in Haryana was killed and then hastily cremated Monday night by her father, police said and added they suspect it to be a case of “honour killing”.

The Class 10 student (name withheld) was shot dead from point blank range by her father, Ratan Pal, a retired Border Security Force (BSF) trooper, in Rewari Khera village of Bhiwani district.

Police said that the trooper was under the influence of liquor at the time of the shooting. He is missing and on the run since Monday night.

Suspended IPS officer’s judicial custody extended

A court here Tuesday extended by a day the judicial custody of suspended Indian Police Service (IPS) officer A.K. Jain, arrested for his alleged role in the killing of criminal Dara Singh in an allegedly staged shoot-out.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) sought the police remand of Jain, who had surrendered in court Monday. This was objected to by Jain’s lawyers.

“The court has reserved the decision for the police remand for Wednesday. His judicial custody was extended till Wednesday,” said CBI counsel Sarfaraz Haider Khan.

12 killed in China riots

A violent mob Tuesday chopped to death at least 10 people in China’s Muslim-majority Xinjiang Uygur region, following which police chased the mob and shot dead at least two rioters.

The clash took place in Yecheng county of Kashgar prefecture, Xinhua reported.

Witnesses said the mob attacked the victims on Xingfu Street around 6 p.m.

The report, however, gave no details as to what might have triggered the violence.

Official, six policemen injured in Rajasthan communal clash

An official and six policemen were injured in a communal clash in this Rajasthan district Sunday, police said.

The situation remained tense as police twice baton-charged a crowd of people from two communities clashing with each other.

According to police, the incident took place in Mavli town in Udaipur district, some 400 km fromJaipur.

“A minor tiff took place between a mobile shop owner and two youths, who were participating in a function of a particular community at a nearby school,” said a police officer.

Three soldiers killed in Pakistan

A Pakistani soldier was killed Sunday in a clash with militants while two security personnel died in a remote-controlled blast in the country’s northwest tribal region, a media report said.

The two incidents took place in Dera Ismail Khan district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, Xinhua reported citing Urdu TV channel Dunya.

Army sources said one soldier was killed and several others were injured during a search operation in Sarakai area of the district.

The attack was followed by a remote-controlled blast in Sararogha area, in which two soldiers were killed and many others wounded.

The Delhi High Court has ruled that a wife, though separated, is entitled to maintenance depending on her husband’s financial position.

“A life on alimony is not to be a life different from what the wife would have led if the relationship had not gone sour. The quantum of maintenance inter alia depends upon the status of the husband,” a division bench of acting Chief Justice A.K. Sikri and Justice Rajiv Sahai Endlaw said.

It rejected the argument that if a husband provides food and shelter after a separation, he owes nothing more to his wife.

Gujarati actress Dimpi commits suicide

Dimple Hingu, Gujarati actress allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison, said police on Saturday.

The actress was 24-year-old.

“Dimple had yesterday evening left her house in Varachcha area and was later found near it in not so stable condition by someone known to her,” they said.

“She was admitted to a private hospital where it was discovered that she had consumed poison,” police said.

The motive behind what led the actress to take such step is not yet known, said police.

Sit-in against Pakistan drone strikes

Hundreds of Pakistanis who live near the Afghan border have launched a two-day sit-in here against US drone strikes in the country’s tribal areas.

The protesters have come from North Waziristan and are camping near the presidency and parliament house to convey their grievances to the US and the Pakistani governments.

The drone strikes targeted Al Qaeda and Taliban militants in Pakistan.

“I have filed a police case in Islamabad against the American officials for killing my son,” Karim Khan, one of the participants who lost his son in a drone strike, said.

Pakistan won’t extend ISI chief’s term

The Pakistani government has decided not to extend the tenure of Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) chief Lt. Gen. Ahmed Shuja Pasha, a media report said.

Pasha, who has been the director general of the ISI for the last three-and-a-half years, will be transferred to the Strategic Plans Division (SPD) as its head, the daily Dawn reported citing sources late Saturday.

He was handed a one-year extension as chief of the country’s spy agency last March.

The government has not commented on the matter.

A source close to Pasha also said the ISI chief did not want an extension.

Demolish “MANNAT ” petition in SC

A plea has been filed in the Supreme Court against Bollywood Badshah, Shahrukh Khan’s bunglow Mannat over the alleged violation of archaeological laws and coastal regulation zone in the construction of the bunglow.

Amit Maruand and Simpreet Singh from Mumbai approached the apex court after the Bombay High Court’s order dismissed the duo’s petition against Khan.

The PIL filed by Maruand and Singh was dismissed by the high court on Jan 28, that also imposed a petition of Rs 20,000 on the duo, saying that it was a “publicity petition”.

A British court has convicted an Indian origin medical student and two men in the murder of a 21-year-old NRI TV executive in south-east London last year. Prosecutors said Gagandip Singh was brutally beaten up and left to die in the boot of a burning car.

Gagandip’s killers had decided to “play God” after the victim allegedly tried to rape medical student Mundill Mahil, 20, six months before he died, the judge said.

WHO takes India off polio endemic list

India has a reason to smile on the polio front, as it was taken off the list of polio endemic countries by the World Health Organisation (WHO), Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad announced at the Polio Summit 2012 here Saturday. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was also present.

“WHO has taken India’s name off the list of polio endemic countries in view of the remarkable progress that we have made during the past one year,” Azad said.

The prime minister lauded the health volunteers, saying the real credit goes to them.
