Kerala-origin tycoon gets global harmony award

UAE-based business magnate M.A. Yusuf Ali, who belongs to a village in Kerala, was Thursday presented with the prestigious Interfaith Harmony Award at a function in the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur.

The award was handed over by Datur Azman bin Hassan, director general of Malaysia’s department of national unity and integration.

The international Interfaith Harmony Award is the prime attraction of the International Seminar on Interfaith Harmony and Tolerance jointly organised by the International Islamic University, Malaysia, and the Kerala-based Madin Islamic Academy.

Nigerian arrested with Rs.2.5 crore of cocaine

A Nigerian involved in drug trafficking was arrested here and 250 grams of cocaine worth Rs.2.5 crore in the international court seized from him, police said Thursday.

Humphrey O. Agbaru was arrested Wednesday from west Delhi’s Vikaspuri area on a tip off.

“He was a member of an international drug trafficking syndicate operating from Mumbai and Delhi. The drugs were supplied to high-profile clients and rave parties,” said a police official.

Sanjeeda, Aamir to tie knot Friday

Popular television actors Aamir Ali and Sanjeeda Sheikh, who have been dating for the past six years, will exchange wedding vows in a nikaah ceremony here Friday.

The ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. at the Khar Gymkhana.

According to sources, “Sanjeeda will wear a bottle green-coloured ‘Pakeezah’ style suit with silver embellishments”, while “Aamir will wear a typical sherwani” for the D-day.

Besides actors from the small screen industry, Bollywood celebrities are also expected to attend the ceremony.

Give blast victims artificial limbs in 3 weeks, AIIMS told

The Delhi High Court Thursday directed the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) to provide within three weeks artificial limbs to victims of the 2011 blast that took place outside the court premises.

The division bench of Acting Chief Justice A.K. Sikri and Justice Rajiv Sahai Endlaw also directed four victims, seeking artificial limbs, to visit AIIMS Friday for the treatment.

Lawyer appearing for AIIMS told the court that the blast victims who had sought the limbs were called by it Feb 17 but none of them turned up.

LeT now targets local youths with passports: Police

Changing its strategy, the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) guerrilla outfit has been trying to engage local boys, holding passports, after its foreign cadres started coming under pressure from the security forces, a senior police official said here Thursday.

“After things started becoming hot for the foreign cadres of the LeT in the state, the outfit’s changed strategy has been to involve local boys, especially those having passports, to continue its subversive activities,” Inspector General of Police, Kashmir, S.M. Sahai said here.

At 51, Shayne could be world’s oldest horse

A 51-year-old chestnut stallion from Brentwood, Essex, could be the world’s oldest horse, the Daily Mail reported Thursday.

Shayne lives in the same town as Pip, the 24-year-old terrier who is thought to be the world’s oldest dog.

The elderly nag has been living at the Remus Memorial Horse Sanctuary since 2007, and is still in better shape than many of his stable mates.

He is believed to have inherited the title of the world’s oldest living horse after the death of the previous holder in 2004.

Reddy returns to Bangalore Jail

Gali Janardhana Reddy, the struggling businessman-turned-mining baron who once dictated terms to the Bharatiya Janata Party in Karnataka, comes to Bangalore early Friday for the first time in six months, as an accused in illegal mining.

Reddy, a former BJP minister in Karnataka, is being brought by road from Chanchalaguda Central Jail in Hyderabad, about 600 km away, by the Central Bureau of Investigation team to present him in a court in Bangalore in connection with an illegal mining case.

The probe into the murder of RTI activist Shehla Masood may see more arrests as the CBI Wednesday hinted at the possibility of involvement of a Bhopal-based BJP legislator.

CBI sleuths, who had arrested a Bhopal-based interior designer, Zahida Parvez, Tuesday for plotting to kill Shehla, said they hoped to reveal the alleged role of an MLA.

Zahida and another accused, Saqib ‘Danger’ were produced in a special CBI court in Indore Wednesday. The court remanded them to CBI custody for a week.

Economic growth falls to 3-year low at 6.1 percent

India’s economic growth slumped to a near three-year low of 6.1 percent in the quarter ended December due to poor performance of manufacturing and mining sectors, official data showed Wednesday.

The data makes it increasingly clear that growth is likely to fall well below seven percent against the budgetary target of 9 percent and the 7.1 percent growth projected by the Prime Minister’s economic advisory panel recently.

Vivek Singh, son of BSP legislator Chandraveer Singh, was in an inebriated state when the incident took place Wednesday morning in the 24-year-old victim’s home in Mehrauli, police said. The woman hails from Moscow and at present is an intern with an architect in Gurgaon.

Chinese woman shot dead in Pakistan

A Chinese woman and a male Pakistani friend were Tuesday shot dead by unidentified motorcycle-borne gunmen in Peshawar city, police said.

Tahir Ayub, senior superintendent of police, said a passport found in the pocket of the slain woman showed she was a Chinese national.

The man killed in the incident in Jahangir Pura area is believed to be a local resident, Xinhua reported.

An earlier report said both people were foreigners.

The incident took place around 5 p.m. when two gunmen on a motorbike opened fire at the two people in a car at a market place in Peshawar.

Shehla Masood case: Woman interior designer, contract killer held

In a major breakthrough in the Shehla Masood murder case, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a woman interior designer for alleged involvement in the murder of the activist in Bhopal last August, said an agency official Tuesday.

Along with the woman, identified as Zahida Pervez, another person, whom Pervez had allegedly hired to kill Masood, was arrested Tuesday from Bhopal.

“Pervez is at present in CBI custody and it is believed that she had some personal rivalry with the RTI activist,” said the official.
