140 soldiers killed in Yemen

Violence is continuing to soar in the Abyan Province of southern Yemen today, with the two day toll of a battle over a Yemeni government military base now over 140 dead, with at least 110 of them soldiers loyal to new Yemeni ruler Major General Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi.

The fighting began yesterday when forces initially termed by the military as “al-Qaeda” but now revealed to have been from the Ansar al-Sharia faction attacked a military base outside of provincial capital Zinjibar.

Attack on US airbase in Afghanistan kills two

Two children died Monday when a suicide bomber detonated his explosives in front of a US airbase in eastern Afghanistan.

The attack took place around 5.30 p.m. at the main gate of the Bagram Airbase, an interior ministry official said. Two other civilians were injured, Xinhua reported.

The target might have been a military convoy, he said.

A spokesman for the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said no ISAF soldiers were killed. The Bagram Airbase is located 50 km from Kabul.

Bihar to have its first ‘open jail’

Some convicts in Bihar will soon get a chance to live with their families, step out for work and lead a life similar to that outside prison, thanks to the state’s first open jail that will begin functioning in May in Buxar district.

“It will be the first of its kind in Bihar where convicts would be able to live with their families in an atmosphere conducive to development of their skills and talent so they could make useful contributions to society,” a prison official said.

SpiceJet foresees tough times

Budget carrier SpiceJet’s chief executive Neil Mills feels the aviation sector, marred by high fuel and interest cost in the coming fiscal, will continue to face “tough operating conditions”.

“I think the tough conditions will continue for a while in the coming fiscal. Our futures are pegged with oil prices and they are very high right now,” Mills told IANS in an interview.

“There are some decisions on new policy like direct import of fuel and foreign direct investment. We are evaluating them and will do what is best for us.”

Iran overturns death sentence for CIA ‘spy’ii

The Iranian Supreme Court has overturned the death penalty given to an Iranian-American CIA “spy” by a lower court, an official said Monday.

“The case of the defendant was sent to the Supreme Court after his appeal, and finally the (death) sentence was overturned… So the (case) was returned” to the court for retrial,” prosecutor general and judiciary spokesman Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Ejei said.

A British survey has found that a third of teenage girls become victims of sexual violence by their boyfriends. Experts fear that some do not even realise they are victims of a crime and others are too terrified or embarrassed to speak out, the Daily Mail reported Monday.

Iran to supply 5000 MW of electricity to India

Oil touches $ 124 per barrel

Global oil prices have soared once again with Brent crude seeing an 83-cent increase to exceed USD124 per barrel on fears that international sanctions against Iran are limiting supply.

The price hike came on Monday as US President Barack Obama was going to discuss Iran sanctions in his meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, heightening uncertainty over Iran’s future oil exports.

Use of WI-FI, Laptop damage Sperm

Radiations from WiFi connections can reduce sperm activity in up to a quarter of men, a new study has suggested.

Conrado Avendano and his team from the Nascentis Medicina Reproductiva in Cordoba also found that working on a laptop wirelessly may hamper a man’s chances of fatherhood.

The researchers took sperms from 29 men aged 26 to 45 and placed them either under a wi-fi connected laptop or away from the computer.

The laptop then uploaded and downloaded information from the Internet for four hours.

Indians convicted of sexually abusing daughter-in-law

A US court has convicted three members of an Indian family here on charges of sexually abusing their daughter-in-law who came to America after an arranged marriage and was threatened to work as a slave.

Rockland County District Attorney Thomas Zugibe said Vishal Jagota, 34, his mother Parveen Jagota, 57 and sister Rajani Jagota, 31 were found guilty after a bench trial of labour trafficking and assault charges for using intimidation, threats and physical violence to force the young woman into a life of “servitude and sexual abuse”.

Goons smashes girl head with beer bottle

IN AN incident reminiscent of the infamous Jessica Lal murder case, a girl, partying with her friends at a night club in Bangalore, was attacked by a reveller with a beer bottle. The assault left Gina needing 19 stitches on her head and has affected her hearing.

Gina was apparently trying to save her friend from the assailant, Nithin Reddy, who wanted to dance with her. Following repeated rebuffs, Nithin decided to take out his anger on the victim and smashed a beer bottle on her head.

Sensex closes flat in special session

Indian equities markets which opened Saturday for a special 90- minute trading session closed on a flat note. State-run firms were among the major gainers, while some realty scrips edged lower.

The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) opened at 17,648.47 points and closed at 17,636.99 points, barely moving from its Friday close at 17,583.97 points.

The 50-scrip S&P CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange also closed similarly unchanged at 5,359.4 points.

For the week, the Sensex shed 1.6 percent, while the Nifty lost 1.28 percent.

Delhi cop who caused man’s death arrested

A Delhi Police constable who pushed a 66-year-old man leading to his death has been arrested, police said Saturday.

Vikram Singh, who joined the force in 2008, was taken into custody three days after Anil Kumar Arora’s death caused outrage, a police officer said.

Arora was treated roughly by the constable when he intervened in a row between the policeman and his son Tuesday night in Delhi Cantonment area in west Delhi.

Arora fell, suffered a stroke and died, his family said.

US House resolution asks Gujarat to restore religious freedom

To mark the 10th anniversary of Gujarat communal riots, a Democrat lawmaker has introduced a resolution in the House of Representatives urging the state government to restore religious freedom.

The non-binding resolution “recognising the 10th anniversary of the tragic communal violence in Gujarat” introduced by Keith Ellison early this week has been sent to the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
