India’s central bank frees more money for credit

In a bid to free more money for commercial banks to lend, India’s central bank Friday cut a key rate that determines the amount of funds such institutions have to compulsorily hold as cash against their deposits.

The move, which comes less than a week ahead of Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) review of the monetary policy for this fiscal here March 15, will release additional liquidity of Rs.480 billion into the system.

Man teaches neighbours ‘parking sense’ with fake summons

A man in Britain, irritated with his neighbours’ habit of parking their cars on the pavement meant for the general public to walk, acted as a traffic warden and sent them 150 fake summons.

Christopher Povey, 41, created the tickets (summons) on his computer after downloading bogus documentation from an online joke shop. He would go out late at night to ‘book’ cars parked in his neighbourhood, the Daily Express reported.

He issued 150 fines in a fake parking ticket scam, a court heard.

US army suicides up by 80% after Iraq invasion

The number of suicides in the U.S. Army rose by 80 percent after the United States launched the war on Iraq, according to an analysis published in the British journal Injury Prevention by American military doctors.

The number of Army suicides began to trend upwards in following the invasion of Iraq in 2004 after 25 years of being well below civilian rates of suicide. By 2008, 140 Army personnel committed suicide, 80 percent higher than in 2004.

CEC for ban on criminals, black money in polls

Barring criminals from contesting and checking use of black money in elections top his reform agenda, Chief Election Commissioner S.Y. Quraishi said Friday.

13600-kg Bunker Buster Bomb

The United States may use a new 13,600-kilogram bunker-buster bomb against Iran, DefenseNews.com reported on Thursday quoting the U.S. Air Force Lt. Gen. Herbert Carlisle as saying.

Women Molested in Mumbai fight backs

At 11.30 pm on Monday, a 28-year-old Bandra resident was molested near her home. But as her attackers found out, they messed with the wrong woman. As the two men tried to assault her, she unleashed a string of punches, forcing them to run away.

Solar flare to hit Earth

A massive solar flare was expected to hit the Earth Thursday bringing with it the threat of power and GPS blackouts, a media report said.

The burst of charged particles, released by the Sun and rushing towards Earth, is the biggest since August and comes as the Sun begins the most active stage of its 11-year cycle, The Telegraph reported.

The cloud of particles was expected to reach Earth around midday Thursday and last until Friday but could be followed by further bursts, experts said.

India’s batting legend Sachin Tendulkar has said no tribute can be enough for his teammate Rahul Dravid, who is expected to announce his retirement from international cricket Friday.

“I have shared my best moments with Rahul Dravid. No tribute can be enough for him,” Tendulkar, who is four months younger to Dravid, was quoted as saying by NDTV.

Tendulkar said he will be missing Dravid, who made his international debut five years after the batting maestro donned the India jersey.

777 people fined for Holi drunk driving

A total of 777 people were caught and fined for drunken driving during a special traffic police drive on the occasion of Holi Thursday, police said.

According to Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Satyendra Garg, 597 two-wheelers, 123 cars and 57 other vehicles were ‘challaned’ during the drive.

Police had made elaborate traffic arrangements to ensure safety of motorists on roads and check incidents of drunken driving, over-speeding, dangerous driving, triple riding, minor driving, driving and riding without helmet and other traffic offences.

Several Karnataka legislators have viewed porn clips in the assembly and not just three Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ministers who quit over the issue Feb 8, a panel probing the incident said Thursday.

Shrishailappa Bidarur of BJP, who is heading the panel comprising assembly members, told reporters here that legal opinion was being sought on summoning all assembly members believed to have watched the clips.

Gilani ordered to reopen cases against Zardari

Pakistan’s Supreme Court Thursday ordered Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani to reopen graft cases against President Asif Ali Zardari.

The orders were issued by a seven-member bench of the apex court that resumed hearing on the contempt case against Gilani for not taking action against the president.

The bench directed Gilani to write to the Swiss authorities and submit an implementation report March 21, reports Xinhua.

The country’s anti-corruption bureau said millions of dollars have been transferred to Swiss banks.
