Man jumps to death

A 60-year-old man, reportedly suffering from depression due to chronic illness, Tuesday jumped to his death from the sixth floor of a north Delhi hospital, police said.

The deceased has been identified as Bhagwat Prasad, resident of Seelampur area of north Delhi.

“According to the doctors, the deceased was suffering from chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease which often causes bouts of depression in the patients,” a police official told IANS.

This allegedly led Prasad to take such a drastic step.

Police officials said that no one has yet come forward to claim the body.

Sensex on a two-week high on higher advance tax payout hopes

A benchmark index for Indian markets rose to a two-week high Tuesday, closing 225 points higher as traders were enthused by indications of higher advance tax payments by corporates suggesting improved earnings. Cues from global bourses too were positive.

The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 17,680.23 points, closed at 17,813.62, up 225.95 points or 1.28 percent compared to its previous close at 17,587.67 points.

White paper on black money likely in budget session

The government is likely to bring in the budget session a white paper on black money stashed abroad, Minister of State for Finance S.S. Palanimanickam said Tuesday.

“The white paper is likely to be brought during the budget session,” Palanimanickam said in a written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha.

He said the government has commissioned a study to access the quantum of black money stashed abroad. “The study is expected to be completed by September 2012,” he said.

Mayawati added Rs.23.64 crore to her wealth in two years

Outgoing Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati’s wealth has gone up by Rs.23.64 crore in the past two years, an affidavit submitted by her while filing her nomination papers for the Rajya Sabha reveals.

In the affidavit, Mayawati informed the vidhan sabha secretariat that she is owner of movable and immovable assets of Rs.111.64 crore. Her immovable assets include a home worth Rs.62 crore in New Delhi’s Sardar Patel Marg near the Uttar Pradesh Bhawan; two shops in Delhi’s prime address, Connaught Place, and a Rs.15 crore residence in Lucknow.

The campaign to preserve vernacular mother tongues and make knowledge accessible to students through translation across the linguistic arc has taken a big stride with a new bilingual dictionary series in Hindi, Bengali, Oriya, Malayalam, Tamil and Kannada from the source language, English.

An initiative of the Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL), National Translation Mission, Regional Institute of South Asia and Pearson Education, the six bilingual dictionaries is the first lot of the 11 dictionaries that the government is collaborating on with Pearson under its Longman imprint.

Little known Bollywood actress Nupur Mehta Monday rubbished allegations of her involvement with match-fixing and her role in luring cricketers into throwing games.

The Sunday Times claimed Sunday that tens of thousands of pounds were being offered to players to throw international matches. This included the World Cup semi-final between India and Pakistan last year.

Mamata blames Left Front for ‘brutal’ land laws

With her government facing flak on farmer’s suicides, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Monday slammed a law framed by the previous Left Front government under which a farmer would lose his land if he failed to pay his debts.

“In 2006 the West Bengal government had formed a law – West Bengal Cooperatives Societies Act, 2005 – which stated that if a farmer fails to repay loans taken from cooperative banks then the property and the land of the farmers will be encroached. This is brutal and shameful law,” Banerjee said.

Television actress Rakhi Sawant Monday visited parliament on the first day of the budget session, saying she wanted to see how it works.

“No one invited me. I just came to meet the MPs. I’ve come to see parliament, to see how it works and how our leaders are working,” she told reporters.

Pub girl gang-raped in Gurgaon

Gurgaon In yet another instance of crime against women, a girl was kidnapped on the road at night and assaulted.
A 23-year-old girl working in a pub at a mall here was allegedly gang-raped by six youth in a flat in the city.

After the assault, the girl was dropped by the youth near Chattarpur Metro Station in Delhi where she approached Delhi Police who in turn contacted their Gurgaon counterparts.

Two jailed in UAE for sex out of wedlock

A Pakistani man and a woman from the Philippines have been sentenced to two months in prison in Dubai for having sex out of wedlock at the home of the woman’s sponsor.

The Dubai Misdemeanour Court convicted the 23-year-old Pakistani and the 27-year-old Filipina maid after they admitted their love blossomed after they met on Facebook, Gulf News reported Monday.

“We chatted for two weeks on Facebook and fell in love. She provided me with her contact number, she helped me sneak into her sponsor’s villa where we had sex,” the Pakistani man told the court.

Premji selling Wipro shares worth Rs.1,530 crore to fund education

The Azim Premji Trust of Wipro founder chairman Azim Premji will sell 35 million shares valued at Rs.1,530 crore ($300 million) to fund educational activities of Azim Premji Foundation, which also runs a private university in this tech hub.

In a regulatory notification Monday, the trust said the amount raised through the sale of shares would be used to scale up the foundation’s activities to improve the quality and equity in school education.

Supreme Court notices to six Andhra ministersa

The Supreme Court Monday issued notices to six Andhra Pradesh ministers and nine bureaucrats for their alleged role in issuing orders during the tenure of late chief minister Y.S. Rajashekara Reddy to favour the business interests of his son Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy.

The notices were issued on a petition seeking a probe against the ministers and the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officers in the case involving the alleged illegal assets of Jaganmohan Reddy.

Two workers burned to death in furnace

Two Austrian metalworkers died a tragic death when a colleague switched on a massive oven without realising that they were cleaning it inside.

According to detectives investigating the horrific deaths, the pair had tried to rip the insulation off the oven’s wall and clawed at the door in a desperate bid to get free, the Daily Mail reported.

The incident occurred when the oven’s automatic door at the factory closed. The giant oven, which reaches a temperature of 800 degrees centigrade, was then switched on.

IPS official commits suicide

An Indian Police Service (IPS) official, Rahul Sharma, Monday afternoon committed suicide by shooting himself with his service revolver.

Sharma, an IPS official of 2002 batch, was posted as District Superintendent of Police in Bilaspur. The exact cause that led the IPS official to take such an extreme step could not be ascertained.

Having served in the Maoist-infested Dantewada district, 37-year-old Sharma was transferred to Bilaspur in January this year. Prior to his new assignment, he was district police chief of Raigarh.

Vijay Bahuguna named new Uttarakhand chief minister

Congress MP Vijay Bahuguna will be the next chief minister of Uttarakhand, senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad announced here Monday.

“It was decided by the MLAs and all the party leaders that Vijay Bahuguna will be the chief minister,” Azad announced.

Bhaguna is the Lok Sabha MP from Tehri Garhwal.

Thanking Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and her son and party general secretary Rahul Gandhi, Bahuguna just said: “I will take all sections of the party along and there will be no breakup.”

Bahuguna, 65, is the son of former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna.

Husband axes wife’s limb for spending night away

Suspicion, they say, can break up a marriage; it can also leave you crippled for life. A 30-year-old woman lost a leg after being attacked by her husband who suspected her of infidelity. Arti’s left leg was hacked by her husband, Shankar Lad, 32, at their home in Virar.

Using a long, sharp knife (called ‘koyataa’ in local lingo), Shankar busted Arti’s kneecap, leaving the lower part of the limb dangling. She also sustained injuries to her neck and shoulder. The attack took place on Saturday night, a couple of days after Women’s Day was celebrated on March 8.

Lightening strikes 4 US planes

Houston Passengers on board four aircraft had a narrow escape as their planes were struck by lightning in Houston airspace.

According to the Houston Airport System officials, lightning hit United flight 1001 from Houston to Bogota yesterday afternoon.

Airline officials said 124 people were on board.

The plane was sent back to Houston and landed safely.

A United Express flight from Houston to Mobile, Alabama was also struck by lightning in the air.

That plane, which had 47 people on board, returned to Houston and landed safely.
