Sunidhi and I are getting married in April: Hitesh Sonik

Shy, reserved and hugely talented musician Hitesh Sonik has revealed that he will be marrying singer Sunidhi Chauhan next month.

“First I was her fan. Now, I am going to be her husband,” Sonik told IANS.

He has known Sunidhi for 15 years. “She was a little more than a child when she won the “Meri Awaz Suno” music contest on television. That is when when we became friends. Gradually, over the years as she grew into a fine singer, our friendship blossomed into love,” says Hitesh softly.

Four dead in Nigeria military chopper crash

At least four people were killed when a military police helicopter crashed in Nigeria Wednesday, Xinhua reported.

Police said the helicopter crashed into a building around 11 a.m. in Jos, capital of Plateau state.

The helicopter was carrying out surveillance in the state capital that has seen clashes between Muslims and Christians that have claimed hundreds of lives in the past.

Police said a deputy inspector general of police was among the victims.

Move to erect Shivaji statue in Arabian Sea rejected

The central government has rejected a Maharashtra government proposal to erect an imposing statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji in the Arabian Sea, one km off the Mumbai coast, a top official said here Wednesday.

“The central government has not given environmental clearance for the project. So, we are not going to pursue it further. We are now scouting for an alternate site for the project,” Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar told media persons.

‘Highest number of fake gun battles in UP’

Uttar Pradesh recorded over 100 fake gun battles from 2008 to Feb 15, 2012, the Rajya Sabha was informed Wednesday.

In a written reply, Minister of State for Home Affairs Jitendra Singh said that 41 cases were registered in the state in 2008-09, 30 in 2009-10, 40 in 2010-11 and 19 in 2011-12.

At 51, Manipur reported the second most number of cases.

381 wives of NRIs seek government help

The ministry of overseas Indian affairs (MOIA) has received 381 complaints of women being deserted or harassed by their non-resident Indian (NRI)husbands, a majority of them from Punjab, the Lok Sabha was informed Wednesday.

Minister of Overseas Indian Affairs Vyalar Ravi said in a written reply that the NRI Cell opened at the National Commission for Women (NCW) too had received 532 complaints since September 2009.

Of all the Indian states, Punjab had the most complaints filed at the ministry by Indian women victims. “There were 94 complaint from that state,” Ravi said.

White rhino calf born in UAE zoo

A rare white rhinoceros calf — considered the “most social” of all rhino species — has taken birth at the Al Ain zoo in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Until the calf is put on display, it will be cared for by the zoo’s keepers and monitored closely by veterinarians.

Despite their size, the white rhinos are agile and can run at speeds up to 50 km per hour.

The white rhino is found in just five countries, including South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Kenya and Uganda.

No minister has resigned: PM

In the wake of speculation about Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi quitting following criticism by the Trinamool Congress leadership over the rail fare hike, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Wednesday scotched the rumours, saying he had not received any resignation.

He also noted that his government was stable and he had already said that his government had the numbers in parliament.

“I have not received any resignation,” Singh said on the sidelines of a defence investiture ceremony at Rastrapati Bhavan here, when asked if Trivedi had quit.

Mamata summons Dinesh Trivedi to Kolkata

Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee Wednesday night summoned Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi to Kolkata, hours after he made defiant statements disregarding the party’s diktat to him to roll-back the rail tariff hike.

“Dinesh Trivedi has been asked to come to Kolkata by our party chief,” a Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha MP told IANS on condition of anonymity.

Asked about reports that Banerjee has written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh proposing Mukul Roy’s name as the new railway minister, he said: “I have no knowledge about it”.

112 government websites hacked in three months: Pilot

A total of 112 government websites, including that of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL), were hacked in just three months, parliament was informed Wednesday.

“During the period December, 2011 to February, 2012 a total of 112 government websites were hacked,” Minister of State for Communications and IT Sachin Pilot said in a written reply in the Lok Sabha.

“The website of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (www.bsnl.co.in) was hacked Dec 4, 2011 by the ‘H4tr!ck’ hacker group,” he added.

Court asks NIA to present Headley

A Delhi court Tuesday asked the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to present May 31 Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist David Coleman Headley, currently in a US jail, for his involvement in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack.

The court Feb 18 accepted charges against Headley and eight other Pakistanis, including Pakistani Canadian Tahawwur Hussain Rana, for the Nov 26-29, 2008 attack that left 166 people dead.

Jewellers demand abolition of gold units

An apex body of jewellers Tuesday urged the government to do away with gold units in Exchange Traded Funds or impose 25 percent commodity transaction tax on them to safeguard interest of jewellers.

Russian aid planes reach Syria

Two Russian planes with humanitarian aid for conflict-torn Syria landed in Damascus Monday, the emergencies ministry said.

The flights were ordered by the Russian government and were coordinated by the foreign ministry. Another Il-76 aircraft will arrive in Syria later in the day. They will bring to over 78 tonnes the total ammount of aid, including tents, blankets, canned food, sugar, baby food and field kitchens.

Spain to return ancient artefacts to Egypt

The Spanish government will return to Egypt eight items, dating back to the time of the pharaohs, which had been taken illegally from the Arab country in 1999, the Egyptian foreign ministry announced Sunday.

The antiquities, which are of limestone, come from the tomb of Eimb Hur, one of the most important officials of the sixth Dynasty, and they are inscribed in hieroglyphics with the name and titles of the tomb’s owner.

14th century castle gutted in blaze

A 14th century castle in Slovakia was gutted in fire which was sparked by two children trying their first cigarette.

According to the police, two boys set fire to some dry grass at the foot of the imposing Krasna Horka castle in Slovakia after sneaking into the castle grounds to smoke a cigarette, the Daily Mail reported.

Over 80 firefighters were pressed into service to control the ensuing inferno which tore through the ancient hill-top building within minutes.
