Exhibition raises concerns over gender inequality

A girl in class 10 writes “it feels really sad to know you all feel that women are inferior and not capable of doing anything”. Another girl writes “… but this world seems to suppress girls and dominate us, which is stupid”. Letters like these are part of an exhibition that aims to introduce visitors to what concerns these young girls.

The title of the exhibition comes from American author and poet Maya Angelou’s collection of poems “And Still I Rise” as it goes with its central theme: raising awareness of gender discrimination and its impact on limiting opportunities for women

Bihar to skill up one crore youth by 2020: Nitish

The Bihar government is planning to skill up one crore youth in the state in a time span of five years to make them compete globally for industries requiring skilled workforce, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said on Saturday.

“We need to make them employable by imparting skills through various skill development initiatives,” he said at an event organised by industry chamber CII here.

Nitish Kumar said Bihar has the largest pool of youth in India aged under 25 and his government has already employed about 100,000 young men and women through employment fairs across the state.

Goa’s women taxi drivers allege harassment

Three women taxi drivers formerly employed with Goa’s first all women radio taxi service have alleged violation of labour laws by the Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC), a state government-run corporation, which has outsourced taxi operations to a private firm.

The women taxi drivers have alleged that at the time of recruitment last year they were informed that they had been employed by the corporation, but once the taxi service started in October last year they realised that their employer was actually a private firm.

Facebook tests laser drones in British skies

If Facebook has its way, there would soon be huge solar-powered drones — with the wingspan of a commercial airliner — beaming down internet in the remotest of areas.

Facebook has been testing such drones in the skies over England, according to its CEO Mark Zuckerberg. The drones use lasers to beam internet access down to the ground, designed to provide connections to rural and internet-free zones, reported The Guardian.

Multi-object tracking radar ready for trials

he indigenously designed Rs.245 crore multi-object tracking radar (MOTR) is ready to undergo trials, said a senior space scientist here on Saturday.

“The multi-object tracking radar has been installed. It has to undergo trials. Once the trials are satisfactory then it will be ready for use,” M.Y.S. Prasad, director, Satish Dhawan Space Centre, told reporters.

According to him, the radar can track around 10 objects simultaneously.

He said the radar can track space debris so that a satellite’s direction could be altered to avoid collision.

Two Czech tourists who were abducted by gunmen two years ago as they were traveling on a bus through southwestern Pakistan have been released, the Czech government said on Saturday.

“I am really glad to confirm that Hana Humpalova and Antonie Chrastecka … returned back to the Czech Republic today in the morning,” Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka said in a statement.

High school seniors increasingly getting hooked onto ‘Hookahs’

(ANI): Though there may be a decline in cigarette smoking, a new study had claimed that now hookah has become a popular trend amongst high school seniors.

The study by University of Waterloo found that almost one in four high school seniors try smoking hookah, and as per the estimates, over 78,200 youth are current water pipe users.

Leia Minaker, who conducted the study, said that while we can celebrate a continued slow decline in cigarette use across the country, water pipes are bucking the trend.

Justice For Hashimpura

Today, on 24th March 2015, the families of Mohalla Hashimpura whose men were shot dead; and the five survivors, of the worst custodial communal killings in independent India expressed their anguish, suffering and outrage at the judgment of the Delhi Trial Court that acquitted all the accused Policemen of the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC). 28 years later, they remembered every detail of that fateful day when about 50 men of Mohalla Hashimpura were abducted by a Unit of the 41st Battalion of PAC in a yellow coloured PAC truck by 19 members of this Unit.

165 convicted for drunken driving in one week

Hyderabad, March 23 (NSS): In the enforcement drive against drunken driving this week from March 14 to 20, a total of 165 cases were booked and the offenders were charge-sheeted.

The courts concerned examined the offenders and imposed fines. The fine amount collected was Rs 3,86,100 and 10 persons were imprisoned. From January 1 to March 20, 2015, the number of total cases was 2,219. An amount Rs 34,54,200 was collected as fines and 142 accused were sent to jail. (NSS)

ICOMOS to help MANUU set up heritage documentation centre

INN): The International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) India has set up a working group to formulate a strategy document for the H.K. Sherwani Centre for Deccan Studies, a research institution of Maulana Azad National Urdu University, for establishing a Documentation Centre and Conservation Studio for heritage management.
