Wild bearded capuchin monkeys are more skilled than anyone in cracking nuts, shows a new study by Indian-American psychologist Madhur Mangalam.

The monkeys are known to use stone “hammers” to crack nuts.

The monkeys are quite careful about the amount of force delivered to those nuts.

They adjust the force applied with each strike based on the condition of the nutshell, making it less likely that they will end up smashing the tasty kernel inside.

Honda Motorcycle & Scooter logs 9 percent sales growth in April

Two-wheeler major Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India opened the new fiscal with a nine percent sales growth, the company said on Friday.

It closed last month selling 340,791 units — up from 313,894 units sold in April 2014, the company said in a statement.

The company said it logged growth last month at a time when the overall two-wheeler industry is expected to log a four percent decline in growth.

According to Honda Motorcycle & Scooter, the industry is expected to close last month with a total sales of 1,448,646 units — down from 1,506,343 units sold in April 2014.

Air India shuts down 23 booking offices

cIANS) India’s national airline is downsizing its booking operations to bring down operating expenses and has closed down 23 such offices across India, parliament was told on Monday.

Minister of State for Civil Aviation Mahesh Sharma informed the Lok Sabha that Air India has closed down 23 booking offices across India, leaving 54 operational. It is also planning to reduce foreign booking offices as well.

5.1-magnitude quake hits Bihar

(IANS) Two days after an earthquake jolted Bihar, another temblor, measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale, rocked the state on Monday. Damage to property was reported from various places, but there was no report of any casualty, an official here said.

With the earthquake again rocking Bihar on Monday at 6.05 p.m., it has created further panic among the people and strengthened rumours in the social media about a temblor striking again.

Two from Andhra including American missing in Nepal

(IANS) An American working for a Christian mission in Andhra Pradesh and a student were missing in earthquake-hit Nepal.

Tony B. Suckla and J. Janardhan, a 10th standard student of A.Y. School in Kambotlapalem in West Godavari district had gone to Nepal on April 13, school officials said.

Suckla (45), a resident of Texas, had last contacted the school management on April 21 and informed that the next day they will be leaving for an expedition to Mount Everest. All efforts by the school authorities to contact them after Saturday’s quake failed.

Fresh tremor felt along Nepal border in Bengal

(IANS) A fresh tremor of magnitude 5.1 on the Richter scale was reported a little after 6 p.m. along the border with Nepal in West Bengal on Monday.

With the jolt at 6.06 p.m., the count of aftershocks climbed to 56 in Nepal and the border areas with India and China.

Saturday’s earthquake, measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale, and its aftershocks in Nepal have left over 3,700 people dead and over 6,300 injured.

At least 38 Indian cities lie in high-risk seismic zones and nearly 60 percent of the subcontinental landmass is vulnerable to earthquakes. Barring rare exceptions, such as the Delhi Metro, India’s hastily-built cities are open to great damage from earthquakes.

The earthquake that devastated Nepal on saturday and jolted northern India, damaging buildings as far apart as Agra and Siliguri, was expected by geologists, who have warned of more Himalayan earthquakes caused by the growing pressures of the sub-continent grinding into the Asian mainland.

14-year-old Mathura girl sets herself ablaze after being gang raped

A 14-year old girl, who was allegedly gang raped by five men of her village, set herself ablaze in Uttar Pradesh’s Mathura District on Tuesday.

The teen was allegedly gang raped on Sunday in Kosi Kalan. The family of the victim tried to hush up the matter, but the victim set herself on fire inside her home.

“The girl has been admitted to the hospital with burns. According to her father, five men of the village gang raped her,” said Lakshmi Singh, Deputy Inspector General of Police

“She was screaming for help,” said one eyewitness.

Hindu temple vandalised in US

In the latest attack on Hindu houses of worship in the US, a temple has been vandalised in Texas “horrifying” both Hindus and non-Hindus, who have offered to help the temple clean the damage, media reported.

In the attack at the North Texas Hindu Mandir in Lake Highlands suburb of Dallas, vandals painted symbols of devil worship on the temple’s door, media reports said on Saturday.

SAS using ‘toy drones’ to pinpoint location of IS militants before airstrikes

The sophisticated carbon-fibre drones, available in shops for 2,500 pounds, are reportedly being used by the British Special Air Service (SAS) increasingly as a surveillance tool to pinpoint the location of Islamic State (IS) commanders and suicide bombers.

According to The Daily Star, these drones are capable of spying on terrorists inside rooms and monitor their activities around towns and villages. They can silently hover above targets for up to half an hour and are impossible to detect by eye.

Two dead, 15 hurt in Mangolpuri fire mishap

At least two people, including a seven-year-old child, have died and 15 others have been injured after a fire gutted three residential buildings in outer Delhi’s Mangolpuri area on Sunday morning.

Ten fire tenders were sent to the location to douse the fire. The operation to put the blaze out took about two hours.

The incident was reported around 4.30 a.m. from the Babu Park area near the Mangolpuri Police station. The cause of fire is yet to be ascertained. Preliminary probes suggest it may have been caused by a short circuit in a store room of one of the house.

Delhi’s Trilokpuri remains tense a day after skirmish

(IANS) A day after Delhi’s Trilokpuri area witnessed a skirmish over parking issue, the area remained tense on Sunday and police personnel were deployed to keep things under control.

According to the police, the clash had broken out among residents of block 26 and 27 of Trilokpuri — which is divided into 36 blocks. However, adequate police presence ensured the skirmish did not get out of hand.
