Road rage: Delhi bus driver beaten to death

A 42-year-old Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) bus driver was beaten to death here on Sunday in a case of road rage, police said.

The driver, identified as Ashok, was beaten by a motorcycle rider after the bus he was driving hit the motorcycle from behind in Mundka area of west Delhi around 9.30 a.m.

A police officer said the motorcyclist and his mother, who was riding pillion, fell on the ground after being hit by the bus following which he entered into an argument with the bus driver.

India among worst offenders in Asia in protecting scribes: IFJ

India along with Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan is among the “worst offenders” in the region in protecting journalists in 2014-15, International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) said in its latest report.

The report ‘The Freedom Frontier- Press Freedom in South Asia’, which was released here today, advocated a strong need for a campaign to end impunity to ensure that those who abduct, attack or kill journalists were brought to justice.

Sreesanth is proud father of a baby girl

Former India speedster S. Sreesanth and his wife Bhuveneshwari Kumari have become proud parents of a baby girl. The child was born a day ahead of Mother’s dDy.

“Very pleased and so so excited to let u all know that we are blessed with a baby angel on mother’s day eve… gods grace,” Sreesanth tweeted on Sunday.

The mother and child are doing fine.

Bhuveneshwari Kumari belongs to a royal family in Rajasthan and the two got married In December 2013.

Sreesanth’s cricketing career took a dramatic dip after he was arrested for his alleged involvement in a match-fixing case.

Pele discharged from hospital

Brazilian football legend Pele was discharged from hospital after prostate surgery, doctors said.

Seventy-four-year-old Pele was released on Saturday morning after doctors performed a transurethral resection of the prostate and confirmed there no sign of tumors, Xinhua reported.

The only player to win three World Cup titles was treated at the same facility last year for a severe urinary tract infection.

Six killed in Egypt clashes

A total of six, including three policemen and three alleged Islamists, were killed during armed confrontations in North Sinai and Damietta provinces of Egypt.

A traffic police officer was shot dead outside a preparatory school in North Sinai’s Arish city, security sources and medics told Xinhua on Saturday

The Egyptian interior ministry said that the second victim was a retired policeman who was shot in the head after exchanging fire with militants.

Gowhar Bhat had lost his father when he was just nine. Today, the Kashmir teen felt truly “orphaned”.

The man who had promised him and his three kid sisters a decent life had been sentenced to five years in prison.

“I was nine when I lost my father. I was too young to understand that loss but I am grieving more today. We feel as if we are orphaned again,” the 18-year-old Pahalgam boy, who had to drop out of school after Class XII, said.

Actor Rajkummar Rao reportedly slapped his Hamari Adhuri Kahani co-star Vidya Balan thrice.

For a scene depicting domestic violence in their forthcoming film, Vidya was slapped three times by Rajkummar.

“Rajkumar plays Vidya’s husband in the film. While the slap was part of the script, no one was expecting him to actually hit her. Usually, when it comes to actions such as these, actors just shoot make-believe scenes,” said a source.

A Budgam resident, who managed to get hall ticket for his Brown Cow to write a professional entrance examination, said he is determined to take the bovine to write the papers.

“You are invited. It is my legal right to take my cow for the exam. I have paid the fees, so it is my right to take the cow there,” Abdul Rashid Bhat told reporters.

“It was not my intention to hurt anyone’s feeling or make a joke of someone. I filled this form only to check the system,” Bhat, who hails from Chadoora area of central Kashmir Budgam district, said.

Moga molestation: Victim cremated, Punjab CM meets family

The 13-year-old girl who died after she was molested and pushed out of a bus owned by Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal’s transport company was cremated on Sunday evening at her native village in Punjab. Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, who met the girl’s family on Sunday evening, said the incident was “very unfortunate”.

The cremation took place amid tight security by Punjab Police. The body was brought by her family from the Faridkot Medical College and Hospital where her post-mortem examination was conducted on Sunday evening.

Pakistan hails Afghan government-Taliban talks

Pakistan on Sunday welcomed “reconciliation” talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban in Qatar.

An eight-member delegation of the Taliban and the Afghan High Peace Council sat face-to-face in Doha for the second day to share proposals for a solution to problems in the war-torn country, Xinhua news agency reported.

“We support any formal or informal talks that lead to reconciliation in Afghanistan,” Pakistan’s Foreign Secretary Aizaz Chaudhry told reporters.

“Pakistan backs every gathering aimed at achieving the goal of peace in Afghanistan,” he said.
