Rejuvenated Rahul reach Telangana for 15 Km Padyatra for farmers rights

Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi will embark on a two-day visit to Telangana from Thursday. The visit will also include a 15-km-long ‘padyatra’ in Adilabad district.

“Rahul’s visit is to highlight the plight of farmers in the country in general and state in particular,” said Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, TPCC working President.

He will stay in Nrimal town on Thursday night, he said.

Rahul’s visit is seen as a morale boost for the party cadre as this would be his maiden visit to the state after separation from Andhra Pradesh on June 2, 2014.

Hindu population up in US, becomes fourth-largest faith

Fueled by immigration, America’s Hindu population has reached 2.23 million, an increase of about one million or 85.8 percent since 2007, making Hinduism the fourth-largest faith, according to estimates based on wide-ranging study of religions in the nation.

The proportion of Hindus in the US population rose from 0.4 percent in 2007 to 0.7 percent last year, according to the Pew Research Center’s “Religious Landscape Study” published Tuesday.

Bar Council asks for police inquiry in Tomar’s fake degree row

Fresh trouble brewed for Delhi Law Minister Jitendra Singh Tomar on Wednesday after the Bar Council of Delhi asked the Delhi Police to inquire into the fake law degree case.

The police inquiry was ordered after Tilka Manjhi Bhagalpur University in Bihar, from where Tomar claims he has completed his degree, informed the Delhi High Court that the minister’s law degree is ‘fabricated’.

Receiving the information for the University, secretary of Bar Council of Delhi, Punit Mittal, said that it has decided to give Tomar some time to clarify his position.

Gold regains sheen, soars to Rs.27,565 per 10 grams

Gold soared to Rs.27,565 per 10 grams on Wednesday, going up by Rs.315.

“This rise in gold price is taking place due to weakening of rupee against dollar. Otherwise in the global market gold is still below $1,200 per ounce,” Bachharaj Bamalwa, past chairman and director of All India Gems & Jewellery Trade Federation, told IANS.

Bamalwa is hopeful that the prices will stabilise as and when the rupee will strengthen against dollar.

Also high demand for the yellow metal in view of the wedding season helped the price to soar.

President pays tribute to Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed

President Pranab Mukherjee paid homage to his predecessor Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed, the fifth president of India, on his 110th birth anniversary on Wednesday.

The president and his staff placed floral tributes in front of Ahmed’s portrait in the Durbar Hall of Rashtrapati Bhavan here.

In his message to the Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Memorial Committee, Mukherjee said: “Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed was a great son of India who represented the best qualities of our tradition and civilization.

“An ardent nationalist and able administrator, Ahmed played an important role in our freedom struggle.”

Mysterious bright spots on dwarf planet reflections of sunlight

The mysterious bright spots on the dwarf planet Ceres are only reflections of the sun’s light on reflective material on the surface, possibly ice, NASA said.

A new sequence of images taken by the Dawn spacecraft on May 3 and 4 from a distance of 13,600 km are the closest yet obtained of bright spots in one of the planet’s craters.

“In this closest-yet view, the brightest spots within a crater in the northern hemisphere are revealed to be composed of many smaller spots,” the US space agency said in a statement. “However, their exact nature remains unknown.”

Delhi sees rain, similar weather on Thursday likely

Showers on Wednesday brought relief to Delhiites who were reeling under an intense heat wave. The brief spell of rain brought down the temperature significantly – three notches below the season’s average at 35.9 degrees Celsius.

The Met department forecast light rain on Thursday.

Wednesday started on a sunny note but by around noon it started pouring in the national capital and the adjoining districts of Ghaziabad, Noida and Gurgaon.

The rainfall recorded between 8.30 a.m. and 5.30 p.m. was 2.4 millimeter.

Lupin Q4 net at Rs.547 crore

Drug major Lupin posted consolidated net profit of Rs.547 crore for the quarter ended March 31, 2015 compared to Rs.553 crore posted during the corresponding quarter a year back.

In a filing in the Bombay Stock Exchange, the company said the consolidated net profit dropped one percent during the fourth quarter of 2014-15.

It attributed the fall in profit to higher price erosion in the US as well as a slowdown in product approvals impacted growth in the quarter.

Sharif chairs all-party meeting on Pakistan-China corridor fears

Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday chaired a meeting in which representatives of all political parties were briefed on the proposed route of the Pakistan-China Economic Corridor (CPEC) project.

The premier assured the leadership of all political parties that the government was ready to remove their apprehensions regarding the proposed route of the CPEC project, Dawn reported.

According to sources, the government also decided to set up a parliamentary committee on the suggestions of the participants of the All-Parties Conference to oversee the CPEC project.

IS’s No. 2 man killed in Iraq airstrike: Report

The No.2 leader of the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group is believed to have been killed on Wednesday in a US-led coalition airstrike in northern Iraq, the Iraqi defense ministry said.

“Based on accurate intelligence reports, the US-led coalition carried out an airstrike on the second man of Daesh (IS in Arabic) terrorist gang’s Abu Ala Afri, and a large number of members of the criminal gang while they were holding a meeting at al-Shuhadaa mosque in the town of Tal Afar,” the ministry said in a statement.

Cabinet approves stake sale in Indian Oil, NTPC

The union cabinet on Wednesday approved the sale of a 10 percent stake in the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) and 5 percent stake in the NTPC, a government source said here.

The proposed sale of five percent stake in National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) is expected to fetch the exchequer around Rs.5,500 crore, while that of 10 percent stake in IOC would bring in nearly Rs.8,000 crore.

As per stock exchange data, the government holds 74.96 percent stake in NTPC and 68.57 percent in the IOC.

Attempt to kill rhino foiled, poacher gunned down

Forest guards at Assam’s Kaziranga National Park on Wednesday foiled an attempt by poachers to kill a rhino, and gunned down one of the criminals, officials said.

Park officials said three poachers had entered the park on Tuesday night.

“We got information from our sources and launched an operation immediately. Our guards came face to face with the poachers around 3 a.m. on Wednesday and killed one of them during the shootout that ensued,” an official said.

The gun battle took place at the Burapahar forest range of the park.

Raghav Ganesh, a 13-year-old Indian-American seventh-grader has won a $5,000 award and named one of America’s top 10 youth volunteers of 2015 for designing and building a device to help visually impaired people.

The device built by Ganesh of San Jose, California uses sensors to detect objects beyond the reach of the white canes used by many blind people.

He was one of 10 young Americans selected in the 2015 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards programme for national recognition based on their outstanding achievements in community service.

A light-hearted mock street fight suddenly took dark turn after one of the boys involved died on the spot.

Police in western China detained 11 people after a crowd of angry customers in early May smashed a halal shop suspected of mishandling food prepared according to Islamic custom, state media said.

A group of “law-breakers” in Xining, the capital of Qinghai province, broke into a store on May 1 and vandalised it after discovering that non-halal foods had been transported along with halal products, a violation of regulations.
