BJP general secretary Ram Madhav today stoked a controversy by questioning Vice President Hamid Ansari’s absence at the Yoga Day event in the capital but later apologised after he was criticised on the social media platform.

Lokayukta Police files FIRs against Yeddyurappa

The Lokayukta Police on Saturday registered three FIRs against former Karnataka chief minister B.S. Yeddyurappa in connection with the illegal de-notification of land.

The complaint was lodged based on the CAG’s report on de-notification of land by the government and allotment of sites by the Bangalore Development Authority.

Jayakumar Hiremath, the complainant, has alleged that Yeddyurappa had in 2010 de-notified land acquired by the Bangalore Development Authority, thereby misusing his official position during his tenure as the chief minister. (ANI)

Experts recommend ways to improve Delhi’s air quality

Experts on Saturday made a number of recommendations to improve Delhi’s worsening air quality at a day-long conclave here.

The event was organised by the Delhi chapter of Indian Association for Air Pollution Control (IAAPC) to formulate short-term as well as long-term policy and solutions to improve the national capital’s air quality.

“More people in Delhi should opt for neighbourhood schools to reduce trip distance frequency. In fact, neighbourhood schools can save 25 million litres of diesel costing Rs.160 crore,” said social scientist Dhunu Roy.

RIL buys Rs.11-crore armoured Merc for ‘Z’ security chairman

India’s largest private company Reliance Industries has bought what is touted as the most sophisticated armoured vehicle for chairman Mukesh Ambani — a fortified Mercedes Benz mounted on an S600.

The base price, according to sources familiar with the development, is around Rs.1.5 crore. But with security features — at the top ‘Level-9’ in this case — and levies such as import duty, road tax and insurance, it works out to over Rs.11 crore, the sources added.

The vehicle was registered here on Saturday, the sources confirmed.

A case was filed on Saturday against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP president Amit Shah and RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat in a court in the Bihar capital for giving a “religious colour” to yoga, thereby hurting people’s sentiments.

“We have filed a case against Modi, Shah and Bhagwat in the chief judicial magistrate’s court in Patna for defaming yoga by giving it religious colour that has hurt the sentiments of people,” said Shruti Singh, the lawyer of petitioner social activist Dev Kumar Singh.

Gujarat High Court on Friday refused to entertain a petition moved by Babubhai Patel alias Babu Bajrangi, convicted in 2002 Naroda Patiya riot case, seeking regular bail.During the argument the division bench of justices Mohinder Pal and RD Kothari inquired whether Bajrangi’s eyesight could be restored or not.

Bajrangi sought bail on the ground that he has lost his eyesight completely and therefore, he should be granted bail to stay with family who can take care of him.

PM meets sugarcane farmers from UP

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday told a group of sugarcane farmers from Uttar Pradesh that his government is working with a vision of making the farmers and the villages self-reliant and prosperous.

Addressing a group of about 150 farmers from various districts of the state, Modi said the government’s decision to provide soil health cards to each farmer in the country would help the farmers reduce input costs and improve productivity.

He said micro-irrigation will help the farmer produce more crop, per drop.

Pakistan suspends execution of death penalty during Ramadan

Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has ordered suspension of executions of death penalties during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan beginning in the country on Friday, officials said on Thursday.

Sharif had lifted a six-year moratorium on the executions after the Taliban attacked an army-run school and killed nearly 150 children, their teachers and staff members in Peshawar in last December.

The government had earlier said that death sentences will be implemented in terrorism-related cases; however, it was later expanded to the pending criminal cases.

Woman’s naked body found in Delhi

The naked body of an unidentified woman in her 40s was found in the national capital on Thursday evening, police said.

A police official told IANS they got a call around 5 p.m. that the unclothed body of a woman was lying near Pahla Pusta fish market in New Usmanpur area in north Delhi.

A police team immediately reached the spot, and sent the body to the GTB Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

The identity of the woman has not been established yet, the official said.
