CAT of IIM to become computer based from this year

Ahmedabad, August 09:Common Admission Test(CAT) of the Indian Institute of Management (IIMs) will become computer based tests (CBT) from this year onwards and will be held in two sessions, IIM-A officials said.

“CAT of the IIMs is going to be a computer aided test from this year onwards, and shall be conducted in two sessions (morning and afternoon) each day, in a span of about ten days,” IIM-A official said.

Most areas of Bihar to be declared ‘calamity-hit’ tomorrow

Patna, August 09:Chief Minister Nitish Kumar today said that most parts of Bihar will be declared ‘calamity-hit’ tomorrow in the wake of deficient rainfalls in the state.

Emerging from an all-party meeting here, Kumar asked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to immediately send a ministerial team to the state to assess the magnitude of the damage due to calamity and recommend for financial package.

The representatives of all the political parties who turned up in the all-party meeting voiced unanimity over the issue of tackling severe drought conditions, Kumar told reporters.

Honour killing? Lovers’ bodies found hanging with injury marks

Chandigarh, August 09:Bodies of young lovers were found hanging from a tree with injury marks on their knees at a village in Jhajjar district and police are investigating if it is a case of honour killing.

Police said the lovers had eloped from their houses in Subana village a few days ago and a complaint was registered against 22-year-old Sandeep on August 5, Jhajjar police chief Saurabh Singh said.

Asked if it was a case of honour killing he said they were investigating the case from all angles. “Things will become clear once we get the post-mortem and forensic report.”

Bomb blast on railway tracks

Guwahati, August 09:A bomb exploded on a railway track causing minor damage to a stationary goods train in Assam’s Goalpara district, official sources said.

The bomb was planted on the railway track at Harimura and it exploded this afternoon when a goods train was stationed there. The blast was of minor intensity.

Railway personnel have repaired tracks and train services resumed.

Meanwhile, security along the railway tracks have been beefed up and patrolling intensified in the run-up to the Independence Day, sources added.

Sri Lankan youth arrested for using fake passport

Hyderabad, August 09:A Sri Lankan youth was arrested today at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport at Shamshabad while allegedly trying to leave for Malaysia on a fake passport, police said.

The Immigration officials initially detained Ranjit Kumar, an engineer, when he was about to board a Lufthansa plane for Malaysia, airport police said.

Later, 21-year-old Kumar was handed over to Shamshabad airport police who arrested him on charges of impersonation, police added.

BPO employee held for raping colleague in Delhi

New Delhi, August 09:A 28-year-old employee of a call centre was arrested here Sunday after his junior colleague accused him of giving her a sedative in cold drink and raping her in west Delhi, the police said.

The 27-year-old victim in her complaint at the Paschim Vihar police station alleged that her colleague Prashant Rana gave her a cold drink spiked with some sedative substance after they got down from their call centre cab late Friday near her house in Jwala Hedi market.

Expand scope of trans-LoC trade, travel: Mufti

Srinagar, August 09:PDP patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed today said the scope of trans-LoC trade and travel should be expanded and made hassle-free to make more meaningful the 2005 initiative of reopening the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad road.

Trade and travel facility should be extended beyond the divided families to common citizens of the two sides of the LoC and double currency system along with a credible banking back-up made available to traders, the former chief minister said.

Younus, Misbah steer Pakistan to 279-8

Colombo, August 09:Skipper Younus Khan and Misbah-ul Haq hit half-centuries as Pakistan posted 279-8 in the fifth and final one-day international against Sri Lanka here today.

Younus made 76 and Misbah an unbeaten 73 to help Pakistan recover from the first-ball dismissal of Kamran Akmal, who was given out leg-before off Nuwan Kulasekara despite getting an edge on the bat.

Younus put on 69 for the third wicket with veteran Mohammad Yousuf (43) and 83 for the fourth with Misbah before being bowled by seamer Dammika Prasad in the 37th over.

CPCB to inspect dyeing units in Ludhiana

Chandigarh, August 09:The Central Pollution Control Board will inspect all the 17 large scale dyeing units in Ludhiana by September 15 to ascertain the extent of compliance of pollution norms prescribed by the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB).

A decision to this effect was taken by CPCB Chairman S P Gautam during a meeting with Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal here today, an official spokesman said.

The complete information relating to these 17 industrial units would be provided by the Chairman of Vardhman Group S P Oswal to the CPCB Chairman to facilitate inspection.

Three arrested for looting people

New Delhi, August 09:With the arrest of three persons, police today claimed to have busted a gang involved in looting passengers in a ‘tonga’ in the capital.

The persons have been identified as Ayub (51) of Delhi, Shahdat Hussain (40) and Sahiruddin from Badayun in UP, police said.

They had looted one Pradeep Kumar Mangal near New Delhi Railway Station on August one. Mangal had boarded a rickshaw and when he reached Near Delite Cinema, the rickshaw puller told that the vehicle is out of order and shifted his luggage in a ‘tonga’.

Old woman murdered in Bangalore

Bangalore, August 09:A 78 year-old woman was found murdered near a hotel in the city today, police said.

The deceased identified as Lourd Mary was found with her head crushed, they said.

The old woman, who was staying alone in Vijayanagar area, is survived by three sons and six daughters.

A complaint was filed by the deceased’s son Uday Kumar.

“It is not murder for gain as the gold jewellery Mary was wearing was found intact,” police said. PTI

Airtel launches wireless data card for prepaid users

New Delhi, August 09:Telecom major Bharti Airtel Sunday launched its wireless data card for prepaid users in Delhi and the national capital region (NCR) that will enable Internet connectivity for laptops and other computing devices while on the move.

The data card can work on all the partner networks of Airtel when on national roaming and is compatible with GSM network while on international roaming, the company said in a statement.

5 cops suspended for beating mentally challenged man

Ranchi, August 09:The Jharkhand police Sunday suspended five policemen for beating a mentally challenged youth in a hospital in Dumka district, police said.

“Five policemen, including one sub-inspector, have been suspended for beating a mentally challenged youth in a hospital in Dumka district,” said a police official in Ranchi.

“Explanation has been sought from the suspended policemen,” he said.

On Saturday, five policemen beat up a mentally challenged man, Ramvilas Thakur, 30, the police official here said.

Couple dead in Haryana, ‘honour killing’ suspected

Jhajjar (Haryana), August 09:Another suspected ‘honour killing’ was reported in Haryana’s Jhajjar district Sunday, with the bodies of a man and a minor girl who went missing from their homes some days ago found hanging from a tree on the outskirts of their village.

“At this point of time we cannot conclude whether it was suicide or murder. But after studying the background of the case and seeing the circumstances, we cannot rule out the possibility of ‘honour killing’,” district police chief Saurabh Singh told IANS.

Supriya Sule not bound to be Pawar’s successor, asserts Patel

New Delhi, August 09: Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Praful Patel says there is nothing wrong if party chief Sharad Pawar’s daughter Supriya Sule takes over the mantle from him but the NCP is not bound to name her the successor.

In an interview to the television channel IBN7 telecast Sunday evening, Patel said: “The credit for bringing Supriya Sule into politics goes more to me than to Sharad Pawar. We brought her into it because she is young and wanted to enter politics.”

“So why not, just because she is the daughter of Sharad Pawar?” Patel asked.

15 dead in Uttarakhand landslide

Dehradun, August 08: At least 15 people were killed and 50 missing Saturday in a landslide triggered by heavy rains in Uttarakhand, an official said.

The landslide occurred in Pithoragarh district, about 450 km from here.

“So far we have taken out 15 bodies from Bala village,” an Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) official told IANS.

The hilly region was lashed by downpour since Friday evening.

Rescue workers were searching 50 people missing in the landslide.

At least 46 families were affected by the tragedy, the official said.IANS

Armed Forces Tribunal inaugurated by president

New Delhi, August 08: President Pratibha Patil Saturday inaugurated the Armed Forces Tribunal, an exclusive court for nearly 2.5 million serving and retired defence personnel. The principal bench of the tribunal will start functioning Monday.

The tribunal will deal with nearly 9,000 cases filed by servicemen pending in various courts across the country.

CBI arrests two mine officials for corruption

Bhubaneswar, August 08: A Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) team Saturday arrested two officers of the Indian Bureau of Mines on bribery charges in Orissa’s Angul district, officials said.

A CBI team from Bhubaneswar raided the guest house of Mahanadi Coalfield Ltd (MCL) at Talcher in Angul district and arrested two officers of the joint coal stock measurement team. The CBI team also seized Rs.4.23 lakh from the room.

“On specific information we raided the room in the guest house of Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd,” Deputy Superintendent of Police (CBI) P.K. Panigrahi said.

Orissa IPS officer booked for torturing wife

Bhubaneswar, August 07:A criminal case has been registered against a state cadre Indian Police Service (IPS) officer for allegedly torturing his wife for dowry in Nayagarh district of Orissa, police said Friday.

Meenal Agarwal, 24, in her complaint at a police station in Nayagarh, 87 km from state capital Bhubaneswar, alleged that her husband Jai Narayan Pankaj tortured her physically and mentally for dowry.

The mother of a one-year-old child also alleged in her complaint filed on Thursday that her parents gave Rs.40 lakh cash as dowry during their marriage about two years ago.
