Islam was introduced to India by the Muslim merchants long before the Islamic conquests ever begin and one of the largest Muslim population in the world such as Indonesia were converted to Islam due to the interaction with Muslim merchants and not by conquests.

Entrepreneurship has a long history in Islam and in fact it started with the Prophet of Islam who himself was a merchant and encouraged business activities. This tradition was carried on and trade flourished in Islamic world eradicating poverty and developing societies with the increased wealth till the time there was Muslim Rule.

BJP names more candidates for Maharashtra, Haryana polls

New Delhi, September 22:The Bharatiya Janata party (BJP) Monday announced its second list of 40 candidates for the Oct 13 assembly elections in Maharashtra and Haryana.

The party also finalised the names of candidates for by-election to three seats in the Uttar Pradesh assembly, according to an official statement here.

The candidate selection was done at a meeting of the BJP’s central election committee chaired by party president Rajnath Singh. It was attended by L.K. Advani, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, his counterpart in the upper house Arun Jaitley and others.

China says military arsenal comparable with West

Beijing, Septemmber 22: China’s military now possesses most of the sophisticated weapon systems found in the arsenals of developed Western nations, the country’s defence minister said in comments published today.

Many of those systems match or are close to matching the capabilities of their counterparts in the West, Liang Guanglie said in a rare interview posted on the ministry’s Website.

“This is an extraordinary achievements that speaks to the level of our military’s modernisation and the huge change in our country’s technological strength,” Liang said.

Washington,September 22:The CIA is deploying teams of spies, analysts and paramilitary operatives to Afghanistan, part of a broad intelligence “surge” that will make its station there among the largest in the agency’s history, U.S. officials say.

When complete, the CIA’s presence in the country is expected to rival the size of its massive stations in Iraq and Vietnam at the height of those wars. Precise numbers are classified, but one U.S. official said the agency already has nearly 700 employees in Afghanistan.

Mehndi leaves hundreds with itchy, swollen palms in Orissa

Bhubaneswar, September 22:Hundreds of women complained of itchy and swollen palms and hands in three northern Orissa districts Monday after applying mehndi (henna) on their hands to celebrate the Eid festival, health officials said.

The henna decoration proved costly for the women and girls, mostly from the Muslim community, in the districts of Bhadrak, Balasore and Mayurbhanj.

Over 200 women and girls from Ramachandrapur, Bont, Kazimohalla and Malatira villages in the district of Bhadrak complained of itching palms a few hours after they applied mehndi.

100 killed in Sudan violence

Khartoum, September 22: At least 100 people were killed in clashes between two rival groups in southern Sudan, officials said Monday.

Thousands of armed men from the Lou Nuer tribe attacked a village of a rival group in Jonglei state Sunday, killing at least 100 people, the UN Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) said.

Last month, at least 185 Lou Nuer tribesmen have been killed in fighting with a rival group in Jonglei. Some 2,000 people have been killed in violence so far this year in the country.

Shoe-throwing Iraqi journalist wants Swiss asylum

Geneva, September 21:Iraqi journalist Muntadhar al-Zaidi, who threw his shoes at former US president George W Bush, said he wants political asylum in Switzerland, a Swiss channel reported Monday.

In parts of an interview posted on the website of TSR, a French-language channel, al-Zaidi said he preferred Switzerland as it was a neutral country that “does not support the occupation of Iraq.”

The journalist said he wanted to gather together Iraqis to launch a class action lawsuit against Bush and other political leaders who backed the invasion of Iraq in 2003, for “war crimes.”

Rajiv Gandhi assassin Nalini starts fast to demand release

Chennai, September 21: S. Nalini, undergoing life imprisonment in the Vellore jail for her involvement in the assassination of former Indian prime minister Rajiv Gandhi, Monday started a fast to demand her immediate release from jail.

Nalini was awarded death penalty in 1991 but later at the intervention of Congress chief and Rajiv Gandhi’s widow, Sonia Gandhi, the death sentence was commuted to life imprisonment.

Obama refuses to stop probe into CIA tortures

Washington, September 21:US President Barack Obama rejected Sunday a request by several former heads of the country’s intelligence community to end investigations into the alleged torture of terrorist suspects.

Speaking to US broadcaster CNN, Obama said in rejecting the request that no one was above the law.

In addition, the US president said that intelligence agency was not entitled to interfere in an active investigation by justice officials.

CIA Adding Bases in Afghanistan as Taliban Gains, Panetta Says

Bloomberg,September 21:The growing strength of the Taliban insurgency in Afghanistan prompted the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency to establish more bases there, the agency’s director said.

The extra CIA operatives are supporting the 17,000 additional troops President Barack Obama authorized soon after taking office this year, as well as the civilian government employees helping to rebuild the country after years of war, CIA Director Leon Panetta said in an interview.

Israel warns of possible attacks against Israelis in India

Jerusalem, September 18:Israel’s Counter Terrorism Bureau warned Thursday night that the group of militants responsible for the Nov 26, 2008 attacks in Mumbai was planning to carry out more attacks across India, especially sites with a large concentration of Western and Israeli tourists.

A statement issued by the bureau said the threat was “concrete and very high”.

The bureau recommended that Israelis currently in India stay away from areas crowded with Western and Israeli tourists, especially places that have no visible armed security.

No platform tickets at stations in capital during fest season

New Delhi, September 16:To manage the extra rush of passengers in the coming festive season, Northern Railway has decided not to issue platform tickets in major railway stations in the city from September 20 to October 25.

During this period “there will be no sale of platform tickets at Delhi Jn. (Old Delhi), New Delhi, Hazrat Nizamuddin and Delhi Sarai Rohilla railway stations,” said a release.

Karzai team slams EU over Afghan vote fraud suspicions

Kabul, September 16:Afghan President Hamid Karzai’s campaign team today criticised EU vote monitors as “irresponsible” for announcing that up to 1.5 million ballots in last month’s elections could be fraudulent.

The European Union Election Observation Mission to Afghanistan said earlier today their analysis of the August polls found almost a quarter of the votes counted so far were “suspicious,” sparking the fierce reaction.

The statement from Karzai’s campaign office said the announcement “is partial, irresponsible and in contradiction with Afghanistan’s constitution”.

Delhi HC to the rescue of pregnant girl

New Delhi, September 16:Coming to the rescue of a pregnant minor girl who was allegedly kidnapped by her neighbour here, the Delhi High Court today directed the city government to provide protection to the girl and adequate
medical arrangement for safe delivery of child.

Slamming the Delhi police for delay in tracing her, a Division Bench of Chief Justice A P Shah and Justice Manmohan said “due to you negligence the situation happened”.

The 14-year-old girl was allegedly kidnapped in October last year and was traced from Jalandhar, Punjab, early this month.

Marketmen said buying activity gathered momentum as stockists indulged in buying gold after the metal in London climbed to an 18-month high on concern that a global economic recovery may stoke inflation amid a weak dollar, boosting demand for the metal as an alternative investment.

Woman commits suicide

Dehra Dun, September 16:A woman allegedly committed suicide by consuming some poisonous substance at her residence in Seemadwar area here after her fiance threatened to break the engagement, police today said.

The incident took place yesterday, when Shweta got an SMS from her fiance in which he said that he wanted to break up. After reading the SMS, she got upset and bolted her room from inside.

When she did not come out till evening, family members broke open the door to find her unconscious, police said adding that she was later taken to a hospital, where she died.

Illegal gun unit busted, 1 held

Kokrajhar (Assam), September 16:A gun factory, meant for the proscribed NDFB and other insurgent outfits, was busted today in lower Assam’s Chirang district and a huge quantity of gun-making raw material, ammunition and explosives recovered and one man arrested.

On a tip-off, a joint team of the 19 Madras Regiment and police raided Kangrajhara jungle area under Bijni police station limits in the wee hours and apprehended one Kamle Basumatary of Ladangiri along the Indo-Bhutan Border.

Basumatary then led the forces to the place where tools for making countrymade guns were recovered.

PPP denies Musharraf given ‘safe exit’ under a deal

Islamabad, September 16:Pakistan’s ruling PPP today denied that former President Pervez Musharraf was given a “safe exit” after his resignation under a negotiated settlement guaranteed by “international and local” stakeholders, saying that no such deal was struck.

Senior PPP leader and presidential spokesman Farhatullah Babar contradicted reports in the media that President Asif Ali Zardari had confirmed holding negotiations with international guarantors to give indemnity and safe passage to Musharraf after he stepped down as President last year.

Cong-NCP seat sharing talks in final stages

Mumbai, September 16:Congress and NCP are close to finalise a seat-sharing pact for next month’s elections to the 288-member Maharashtra assembly with the two parties likely to contest 174 and 114 seats respectively.

Eight-year-old girl killed as tree falls on her

Jammu, September 15:An eight-year-old girl was killed, when a tree fell on her during illegal tree cutting in forest belt of Rajouri district today, Police officials said.

The girl, a student of class two, Naziya was returning home from her school, when a tree fell on her during illegal cutting of forest trees in Dhara village of Thanamandi belt of the district today.

Timber smugglers later threw the body of the girl in a gorge to hide her, they said adding that parents and villagers launched a search in the forest belt after girl did not returned home from school.

Afghan body to recount ballots from 10 percent polling centres

Kabul, September 15:Election authorities said Tuesday they would recount ballots from around 10 percent of the polling stations in last month’s presidential vote due to indications of fraud.

The UN-backed Electoral Complaints Commission (ECC) ordered the recount after receiving more than 2,000 complaints of fraud, with hundreds of them said to be serious enough to affect the outcome.

“The ECC decided that we should recount ballots from 2,516 polling stations and we are waiting for their representatives to start the recount,” deputy chief electoral officer Zekria Barekzai told DPA.
