Internet Protocol: IPv6 launch on June 6

In a move signalling the advent of a new era, the Internet Society will shift from the current IPv4 regime to IPv6 on June 6.

The ‘World IPv6 Launch’ will see a number of Internet Service Providers (ISPs), hardware makers and websites, including a few from India, running the new generation of Internet Protocols.

IPv6 will make not much difference to most users because they will most probably continue to use IPv4 by default, as the switch to IPv6 is possible only when their computers, the networks and the content and service providers are ready for it.

Chennai ready for Venus transit on June 6

The Breakthrough Society, which has been working towards popularising science, conducted an awareness programme at Marina Beach in Chennai on Sunday on the rare occurrence of the transit of Venus, scheduled to take place on June 6.

Members of the society distributed solar filters and carried out an awareness campaign on viewing the transit of Venus on June 6.

The society has also set up telescopes to let people view the craters on the moon and planets like Saturn and Mars.

Actor Shahid Kapoor has denied reports that he is starring in ‘Wanted’ sequel planned by choreographer-director Prabhu Deva.

“I don`t think anyone can replace Salman Khan. Americans flocking to India for stem cell therapy

A growing number of Americans are travelling to India to seek treatment for rare diseases through India`s experimental embryonic stem cell therapy, according to an investigative report.

Among them Cash Burnaman, a 6-year-old South Carolina boy, who travelled with his parents to India seeking treatment for a rare genetic condition that has left him developmentally disabled, CNN reported.

Protein `helps body attack cancer`

Scientists claim to have engineered a protein which allows the body`s immune cells to get inside tumours and attack cancer cells.

The pioneering experiment, published in the `Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences` journal, was carried out by an international team led by Prof Ruth Ganss at the Western Australian Institute for Medical Research.

“Until now, immunotherapy has not been very successful in treating cancer because tumours are very resistant to immune cells,” said Dr Anna Johansson, from The University of Western Australia, a team member.

New treatment for eye patients

An eye hospital in Kolkata has introduced an innovative method of `Auto blood Conjunctival Graft Fixation` surgery for treating Pterygium patients with their blood.

Pterygium is a wing-shaped fibro vascular tissue encroaching on to cornea from the nasal or temporal side causing visual disturbance, irritation and redness of eye.

“The idea of using natural blood clot as tissue adhesive is derived to provide the benefits of glue fixation to the patients minus drawbacks,” said Santanu Mitra, senior consultant – cataract and occuloplasty services, Disha Eye Hospitals & Research centre.

Office desks put workers at risk of serious illness because they are crawling with germs, experts have warned in a new study.

Workplace kitchens and break rooms are also at risk, particularly sinks where staff clean their cups and plates and also microwave door handles.

In a US study, hygienists collected nearly 5,000 swabs from buildings including law firms, insurance offices, call centres and healthcare companies. It found office workers unwittingly spread bugs around on a daily basis.

RBI to take steps to arrest rupee fall: Subbarao

Amid steep decline in the value of rupee, the Reserve Bank Thursday said that it is monitoring the situation and will do whatever is necessary to check the currency’s fall.

“RBI will do whatever is necessary. Some structural changes are necessary for improvement in current account. Meanwhile, the RBI is monitoring the situation and we will do whatever is necessary, consistent with our policy,” RBI Governor D Subbarao said while addressing a press conference after a meeting of the central bank board here.

Supreme Court orders Tiwari to submit blood sample

In a setback to veteran Congress leader ND Tiwari, the Supreme Court Thursday directed him to submit his blood sample for DNA profiling in a paternity suit filed by a young man, Rohit Shekhar, who claims to be his biological son.

The apex court bench of Justice Deepak Verma and Justice S.J. Mukhopadhyay directed Tiwari to submit his blood sample on May 29 after he refused to follow a Delhi High Court order for giving his blood sample.

‘Obama admin handled Dr Afridi issue poorly’

Peter King, Republican chairman of the Homeland Security Committee in the US House of Representative, has expressed concern over Obama administration’s inaction to protect a Pakistani doctor, who was imprisoned for 33 years for helping Washington to track down Osama bin Laden.

“This has been handled very poorly right from the time of the raid,” Fox News quoted King as saying.

The doctor, Shakil Afridi, ran a vaccination program for the CIA to collect DNA and verify Laden’s presence in Abbottabad, where US commandos killed the Al Qaeda chief.

Afghanistan: 17 Taliban rebels killed, 54 detained

Up to 17 Taliban insurgents have been killed and 54 others detained as Afghan forces and NATO-led coalition troops launched military operations in different provinces within the past 24 hours, the Afghan Interior Ministry said on Thursday.

“Afghan police, Army and international coalition forces launched nine cleanup operations in nine provinces, killing 17 armed Taliban insurgents and detaining 54 other suspected insurgents over the past 24 hours,” the ministry said in a statement providing daily operational updates to media.

US drone strike kills 10 militants in Pakistan

A US drone targeted a compound in the restive North Waziristan tribal area of Pakistan on Thursday, killing 10 suspected militants in the second such attack in as many days.

The CIA-operated spy plane fired two missiles at a compound in a village in North Waziristan Agency. The attack also caused damage to a nearby mosque, residents said.

Security sources claimed that those killed in the strike belonged to Turkmenistan and had recently moved to the area.

Doha and Baku cut from 2020 Olympic bid field

Doha and Baku were eliminated from the race for the 2020 Olympics on Wednesday as the IOC trimmed the field of candidates from five cities to three.

Tokyo, Madrid and Istanbul made the cut as the International Olympic Committee executive board settled on a shortlist of finalists.

Doha, capital of the Gulf state of Qatar, and Baku, capital of Azerbaijan, were rejected for a second time in a row after failing to make the final list for the 2016 Games.

UAE launches e-visa system for visitors in Argentina

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has launched an electronic visa system in Argentina to facilitate issuance of entry permits for visitors in the country.

The e-service was launched by UAE ambassador to Argentina Mohammed Isa Al Za’abi.

According to UAE ambassador to Argentina Mohammed Isa Al Za’abi, who launched the e-service, this system is more accurate and advanced.

“The new e-visa system is in line with sound directives and wise policy of UAE leadership for serving national interest,” he added.

Microsoft to release Office Apps for Android Tabs, iPads

Software giant Microsoft is set to release Microsoft Office for Android tabs and iPads and an Outlook Web app for iOS this fall.

Although officially Microsoft has no comment to make, reports have surfaced that the full suite of Office apps will have a November release, according to website BGR.

According to BGR’s source, the app is said to look almost identical to the leaked images from a few months ago.

The source also claimed the app’s loading screen read “Office for iOS,” suggesting iPhone and iPod Touch could have the software in their future as well.

SpaceX nears ISS, first test successful

SpaceX’s unmanned Dragon space capsule completed its first test before its scheduled docking at the International Space Station, NASA said Wednesday.

The test flight was launched atop a Falcon 9 rocket which blasted off before dawn Tuesday from Florida’s Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. With its successful launch, SpaceX, owned by the billionaire Internet entrepreneur, Elon Musk has completely dispelled doubts about commercial space travel.

John losing Rs 50 lakh a day

Bollywood actor John Abraham’s passport woes crept up on him once again yesterday, after his lawyer Abad Ponda revealed the star would lose over Rs 50 lakh a day if he did not leave for Turkey in time to complete his next film, Race 2.

John had approached the Bombay High Court yesterday seeking renewal of his passport, which expires in the next six months.

In his petition, the actor stated that as per its laws, the Turkey government issues work visas only to those who have a passport validity of more than six months.
