India’s retaliatory action made Pak to take UN refuge

Pakistan was forced to take United Nation’s refuge to stop retaliatory action by India in the wake of repeated ceasefire violations, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said today.

“They (Pakistan) went to request the United Nations Security Council to ask India to stop (retaliatory action),” Singh told a public rally here.

“It was the policy of the Congress government to show only white flags even if Pakistan side killed every Indian. We asked the DG BSF to give a befitting reply to the Pakistani side,” he said.

Eight babies die in Pakistan as incubators malfunction

Eight newborn babies died of asphyxiation at a hospital in eastern Pakistan`s Punjab province, after their incubators failed to supply them with oxygen, an official source told Efe news agency Wednesday.

The incident occurred at the District Teaching Hospital Sargodha where the hospital`s chief administrator Ejaz Akram said that he lacked sufficient resources to properly care for the approximately 100 children admitted there.

“The hospital admits any child in a critical state, but the children`s ward only has 26 incubators and 50 beds, which are shared among the children,” Akram said.

Aus man fined 5,000 dollars for parking plane at pub

A 37-year-old man who drove his light plane down the main street of a West Australian town and parked it outside a pub has been fined a hefty 5,000 dollars.

Anthony Philip Whiteway pleaded guilty in the court to committing an act likely to endanger the life, health or safety of a person.

The small wingless plane had a propeller running when it was driven down the street in WA Pilbara town earlier this month, ‘abc.net.au’ reported.

Whiteway had just bought the aircraft and was taking it home when he stopped at the Newman Hotel.

Pankaj Advani wins opening match in IBSF World Snooker

India’s top cueist Pankaj Advani fought off a stiff resistance from Keen Hoo Moh of Malaysia to notch up a 4-2 win in his opening match in the Seaways IBSF World Snooker Championship here on Wednesday.

After leading 2-0 with breaks of 65 & 85 in the first two frames, Advani lost the next two frames to Moh. Advani, however, found his touch again to take the next two frames with ease to win 4-2 on the opening day at the Kanteervava Indore Stadium.

Nepal and China sign agreement to develop mountain tourism

Nepal and China have signed an agreement to promote bilateral cooperation in the areas of mountaineering and tourism.

President of Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) Ang Tshering Sherpa and Leader of Delegation and General Secretary of China Tibet Mountaineering Association (CTMA), Zhang Min Sien, yesterday signed the protocol agreement in presence of Tourism Secretary Suresh Man Shrestha.

The agreement aims to exchange projects by sharing information on mountain climbing and other techniques.

A senior IPS officer in CBI is the “mole” who supplied documents and file notings to advocate Prashant Bhushan on the basis of which “false and baseless” allegations were made, agency chief Ranjit Sinha claimed in the Supreme Court today.

The four-and-half hour proceedings witnessed high voltage drama and heated exchange of words with counsel appearing for Sinha and Bhushan losing their temper often and the bench headed by Chief Justice H L Dattu had to intervene.

PDP patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed Wednesday filed his nomination papers for the Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections, and said only his party can counter the BJP’s “divisive agenda”.

The keenly awaited auction of coal blocks will be held around February 11 but power tariffs are unlikely to shoot up following bidding, expected to be intense, as the government has put in place norms to regulate the bid war.

As per the draft rules of bidding for the first set coal blocks from among the 204 whose allocations were cancelled by the Supreme Court in September, the mines will be allocated only for specified end-use like power generation and there will be a cap on number of blocks a company can bid for.

2G case: Court allows CBI plea to summon additional witnesses

A special court today allowed CBI plea to summon additional witnesses and for producing documents before it in 2G spectrum allocation scam trial, observing that it appeared to be “essential” for a just decision in the case.

Special CBI Judge O P Saini, however, cautioned the agency that “fragmentary” filing of documents do cause anxiety and uncertainty in a trial and the prosecution should keep in mind that the Indian legal system does not cleave to be theory of “hound-the-accused-at-all-cost-by-all-means-fair-or-foul”.

CBI on Tuesday arrested a middleman after recovering cash of over Rs 14 lakh and two gold biscuits from his residence during searches conducted at 18 locations including the home of a Rajya Sabha MP in connection with its probe into the Seashore group’s alleged chit fund scam.

Shubhankar Nayak, the alleged middleman was arrested by the agency late in the evening, a CBI official said.

US consulate delegation meets Fadnavis

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Monday said the state has immense scope for investment and his government will expedite issuing of licenses to set up industries.

Interacting with a delegation from the US consulate, headed by consular general Thomas Wajda, Fadnavis said he would initiate continuous dialogue with investors to bring in foreign investment and create awareness that Maharashtra is an investor-friendly state.

Government looking at 100,000 MW solar power by 2022

The government is working at revising the solar power generation target to 100,000 MW for 2022 from the current 20,000 MW, Power and Renewable Energy Minister Piyush Goyal said Monday.

“We have reset the targets of renewable energy. The earlier target for solar energy was 20,000 MW till 2022, which we are trying to reset to 100,000 MW,” he said at an event here organised by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) University

“On the solar front, we believe there is enormous potential to take it to 100,000 MW in the next 5-7 years,” he added.

SAI panel meets on Walsh proposals

The six-member committee set up by the Sports Authority of India (SAI) to study the proposals of Indian hockey chief coach Terry Walsh, had a six-hour long meeting Monday.

“The committee comprising former Indian hockey players Ajit Pal Singh, Ashok Kumar, Zafar Iqbal, Indian hockey’s high performance director Rolant Oltmans, SAI Executive Director (Teams) Sudhir Setia and Hockey India (HI) CEO Elena Norman met at SAI headquarters after their first meeting Nov 14 and would have another meeting with the sports ministry Tuesday,” SAI said in a statement.

Top tech firms call for ‘changes’ to US surveillance programme

A coalition of top technology and Internet giants, including Apple, Google and Microsoft, today called on the US Senate for “meaningful changes” to curb surveillance powers and for more transparency on government data requests.

Apple, AOL, Dropbox, Evernote, Facebook, Google, LinkedIn, Microsoft, Twitter and Yahoo! in a letter said: “Now is the time to move forward on meaningful change to our surveillance programmes.”

“Confidence in the Internet, both in the US and internationally, has been badly damaged over the last year. It is time for action,” they said in the letter.

Major reforms in adoption procedure: Maneka Gandhi

Major reforms being carried out by the central government will enable prospective adoptive parents to get a child within a period of maximum of four months, Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi said here Monday.

Briefing the newly-constituted consultative committee of parliament attached to the ministry, she highlighted reforms being carried out in the system of adoption to make it easier for parents to adopt a child.

An official release said the meeting was on “Adoptions, Adoption Processes and Reforms that are required”.

Gunmen attack Nigeria school, casualties not known

Firing shots in the air, gunmen attacked a school in central Nigeria`s Niger state Monday, police told Xinhua but declined to give details of casualties.

The gunmen, who are yet to be identified, stormed the premises of Limawa Primary and Secondary School in Minna, the provincial capital, state police spokesman Ibrahim Gambari said.

The incident occurred at 10.30 a.m. as students settled in their classrooms for the day`s lessons, he said, adding normalcy had since returned to the area following intervention of security personnel.
