Rajya Sabha passes bill simplifying law for small establishments

Rajya Sabha Tuesday passed a bill which simplifies labour law procedures for establishments employing up to 40 workers.

Moving the Labour Laws (Exemption from Furnishing Returns and Maintaining Registers by Certain Establishments) Amendment Bill, 2011 Labour Minister Bandaru Dattareya said the main purpose of the amendment is simplification of laws.

Need to promote walking, cycling in cities: Naidu

Urban Development Minister M.Venkaiah Naidu Tuesday said cycling and walking must be encouraged in urban areas to enable quick mobility.

Speaking at the “Urban Mobility India Conference and Expo” here, the minister expressed concern over the rising number of private vehicles in cities and called for efficient and reliable multi-modal public transport systems to enable quick urban mobility.

Expressing satisfaction over the peaceful culmination of the first phase of elections in Jammu and Kashmir with an “encouraging” turnout, opposition PDP on Tuesday said the trends emerging from the voting show that people of the state want change.

Indian tennis star Sania Mirza was Tuesday appointed the UN Goodwill Ambassador for the South Asian region by UN Women at an event held to mark the International Day To End Violence Against Women.

Sania, India’s most successful women’s tennis player and the first Indian to break into the World Tennis Association’s top 50 rankings, is the first South Asian woman to be appointed the goodwill ambassador in the organisation’s history.

Terry Walsh may have expressed a desire to again take up the Indian coaching job, but Hockey India on Tuesday made it clear that it doesn’t require the services of the Australian anymore.

Former SC judge Prasad to succeed Katju as PCI chief

Former Supreme Court judge CK Prasad is set to be appointed as the next Chairperson of the Press Council of India.

Information and Broadcasting ministry sources said Prasad has been selected by a committee headed by Vice-President Hamid Ansari yesterday and a communication has been received in this regard.

Prasad will succeed justice Markenday Katju as the Chairman of the PCI.

Botched surgeries: Congress takes up matter with President

Alleging a cover-up, Congress has taken up with President Pranab Mukherjee the issue of the death of 14 women in botched up sterilisation surgeries in BJP-ruled Chhattisgarh.

AICC legal department secretary K C Mittal has sent a written communication in this regard to Mukherjee last evening and has sought an appointment on behalf of lawyers from Chattisgarh.

Six arrested for stalking and harassing women in car in Bengaluru

In a swift action, police have arrested six persons for allegedly stalking and harassing five women sitting in a car in the heart of the city within two days after the incident which was caught on camera.

The incident happened on Saturday around 11.30 PM when the women on a weekend outing stopped their car near an ice cream parlour on MG Road and found to their shock unidentified men trying to open the doors of their vehicle with their screams for help going unnoticed.

Jitan Ram Manjhi terms no entry remark on central ministers ‘sweet joke’

Under attack from BJP for his comment that seven union ministers from Bihar would not be allowed entry into state, Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi today retracted and termed the comment as ‘sweet joke’.

He, however, accused Narendra Modi’s government of ignoring the state.

“It was ‘meetha majak’ (sweet joke)… I never meant it (central ministers will not be allowed entry into the state),” Manjhi said in his speech after presenting the ninth annual report of JD(U) government.

Voters make beeline for polling booths in one-time militancy hive

It was a case of the ballot defeating bullets in what was once the hive of militancy in Jammu and Kashmir as an unprecedented number of voters in Chenab Valley braved the extreme cold to come out and exercise their franchise in the first phase of polling for Assembly elections in the state.

The rush of voters, which is also being seen as a rebuff to separatists , was such that by 10 A.M., 15.56 per cent of 78,962 voters had cast their vote in the Kishtwar Assembly segment while Indrawal constituency in Kishtwar district saw 16.84 per cent of 83,631 electors turning up for polling.

Sharif asks Obama to raise Kashmir issue during India visi

Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has asked US President Barack Obama to take up the Kashmir issue with the Indian leadership when he travels to India in January, saying its early resolution would bring enduring peace, stability and economic cooperation to Asia.

Sharif made the request when Obama telephoned him last night to convey about his visit to India to attend the Republic Day celebrations as the chief guest and discussed bilateral ties and the regional situation.

Tihar officials foils violence plan by a group of inmates

A plan by group of Tihar jail inmates to indulge in violence during a function was foiled by the prison’s security officials who stopped the prisoners from attending the event, officials claimed.

Later, around 27 of these inmates allegedly inflicted self -injuries on themselves in a bid to show their displeasure.

The incident happened on November 10 at the launch of second season of ‘Tihar Idol’, a singing talent show that the authorities of the high-security jail first organised in 2012 on the lines of famed ‘Indian Idol’.

BHU violence: 14 students suspended

Banaras Hindu University on Saturday suspended 14 students for their alleged role in inciting violence on the campus two days ago.

The university administration also said that a probe by a retired High Court judge will also be conducted into the widespread violence on the campus.

Scores of students and others were injured on the campus here on Thursday when some students demanding restoration of students union instead of election to the students’ council turned violent and clashed with the police.

British hostage appears in new IS video

British journalist John Cantlie, being held hostage in Syria by the Islamic State (IS) terror group, has appeared in a new video in which he claims the US failed to rescue him and fellow hostages in July.

The nine-minute film, the seventh in a series titled ‘Lend Me Your Ears’, shows the freelance photojournalist behind a desk and apparently reading from a script, following the pattern of most of the previous videos featuring him.

Over 900 killed by US-led strikes in Syria

The US-led anti-terror coalition has killed more than 900 people in its strikes inside Syria during the past 60 days, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Saturday.

The casualties include 52 civilians,72 fighters of the Al Qaeda-linked Nusra Front and 758 fighters of the Islamic State militants, Xinhua reported citing the statement.

The casualties were as a result of the US-led strikes in oil-rich fields in Syrian provinces of Hasaka, Deir al-Zour, al-Raqqa, Aleppo and Idlib.

Arun Jaitley against burdening salaried, middle class

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley today said that he does not favour burdening the salaried and middle-class with more taxes but would go after the evaders in widening the net.

In fact, he would encourage more money being put in the pockets of tax payers that will lead to spending and collection of more indirect taxes.

Nitish asks JD(U) workers to foil BJP ‘divide and rule’ policy

Accusing the BJP of being an expert in “misinformation campaign”, senior JD(U) leader Nitish Kumar today asked party workers to give a befitting reply to the saffron party’s “divide and rule” policy in the coming Assembly elections.

Kumar asked the people, particularly in the minority-dominated areas, “to avoid division of vote so that BJP do not gain by dividing the society”, while addressing JD(U) workers as part of his “Samparak Yatra”.
