Iran reiterates support to Syrian government

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani Tuesday reaffirmed his country’s support to the Syrian government, saying Iran will remain by the side of Syria in fighting terrorism.

Those groups in Syria which have resorted to arms against the Syrian government and its nation “are not dissidents but terrorists”, Rouhani said during a meeting with visiting Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem, on the sidelines of a two-day international conference, the World Against Extremism and Violence (WAVE), in Tehran Tuesday.

Pakistan rejects India’s allegations, rakes up Samjhauta blasts

Pakistan Monday said it firmly rejects India’s “baseless allegations” about “mainstreaming of terrorism” regarding the Lahore rally by terror mastermind Hafiz Saeed and also the “equally baseless allegations and efforts to malign Pakistan by implicating it in the recent attacks” in Jammu and Kashmir.

In response to a question about comments by India’s external affairs ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin, Pakistan foreign office spokesperson Tasnim Aslam said: “We have taken serious note of the remarks made by the spokesperson of the Indian MEA.”

Spat in Lok Sabha between Trinamool member, BJP

The Lok Sabha witnessed a spat between Trinamool Congress member Kalyan Banerjee and BJP members, including a minister, with the chair expressing its unhappiness over the exchange of words.

Trouble started when Banerjee was speaking on the Repealing and Amendment (Second) Bill, 2014 that was later passed by the house.

Banerjee made a reference to Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Rajiv Pratap Rudy, who had told him to address the chair. “I expect the ministers, like Shri Rudy, to listen to us,” Banerjee said.

Convicts in LN Mihsra case claims political conspiracy

The convicts in the 1975 Lalit Narayan Mishra murder case on Monday claimed they were victims of a “political conspiracy” while the kin of the then Railway Minister hailed the Delhi court’s verdict saying justice has been meted out after almost 40 years.

While the family members of the convicts broke into tears as soon as District Judge Vinod Goel pronounced the verdict in a jampacked courtroom, CBI prosecutor N K Sharma expressed satisfaction that nearly 40 years after the assassination of Mishra, the trial has resulted in conviction.

Prakash Mishra tipped to become CRPF DG

Special Secretary in the Union Home Ministry Prakash Mishra is tipped to be the new chief of country’s largest paramilitary force – CRPF.

An order for appointment of Mishra, a 1977-batch IPS officer from Odisha cadre, will come soon from the Appointments Committee of Cabinet headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The name of Mishra, who heads the Internal Security division in the ministry and has been the Director General of Police in his state, was cleared by a high-powered committee headed by Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, official sources said today.

Character certificate of ‘rapist driver’ fake: Police

The driver of global taxi service provider Uber accused of raping a 25-year-old woman here got his licence on the strength of a fake character certificate purportedly issued by Delhi Police.

Delhi Police Commissioner B.S. Bassi told reporters that the character certificate recovered from the driver’s possession was fake and it was not issued by the police.

He said the certificate has the signature of an additional deputy commissioner of police, who was not deputed on that date in south Delhi.

Rape in cab: Charge sheet to be filed in 3 weeks

Delhi Police is ready to make a water-tight charge sheet in the case of rape of a 25-year-old financial analyst, and is likely to file it within three weeks, a police official said Monday.

“The incident happened Friday night and we cracked the case next day. And we also managed to zero in on the accused from his native place at Uttar Pradesh’s Mathura. Now, we will try to file the charge sheet within three weeks,” a senior official told IANS.

UN seeks $16.4 bn of humanitarian aid for 2015

UN humanitarian bodies and partners Monday launched a humanitarian appeal for $16.4 billion in 2015 to help some 57.5 million of the most vulnerable people in the world.

“The number of people affected by conflicts and natural disasters around the world has reached record levels,” Xinhua quoted UN Under Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs and UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Valerie Amos as saying at a press conference here.

Jammu and Kashmir’s top Army commander has said the parameters for determining success in counter-insurgency operations have not kept pace with the changing environment, leading to “confusion” in the minds of the personnel.

New racial profiling guidelines flawed, misleading: US Sikhs

Sikhs Americans have rejected new racial profiling guidelines of the US government alleging that the rules are flawed and misleading.

Although the new guidance explicitly recognises that discriminatory profiling is “unfair” and “ineffective”, and that biased practices “promote mistrust of law enforcement, and perpetuate negative and harmful stereotypes” it still allows discriminatory profiling by US Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), alleged Sikh Coalition, a Sikh rights group.

Fair trade regulator clears merger between Sun Pharma, Ranbaxy

Indian fair trade regulator Competition Commission of India (CCI) Monday cleared the $4 billion merger between pharmaceutical majors Sun Pharma and Ranbaxy, with the condition that both the companies would have to divest seven key products.

According to the Corporate Affairs Ministry, CCI in its meeting held on Dec 5, approved the proposed merger, subject to the parties inter alia carrying out the divestiture of their products relating to seven relevant markets for formulations.

Jaitley introduces bill on payment, settlement systems

Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley Monday introduced a bill in the Lok Sabha that seeks to increase transparency and stability of financial markets in the country in line with the globally accepted norms.

The Payment and Settlement Systems (Amendment) Bill 2014 seeks to amend the act passed in 2007.

The Payment and Settlement Systems Act, 2007 was enacted for regulation and supervision of payment systems in India and to designate the Reserve Bank of India as the authority for the purpose.

NIA starts probe into Roorkee explosion

Two days after a 12-year-old school boy was killed in an explosion in Roorkee town, Uttarakhand police have interrogated 8-10 persons even as the National Investigation Agency has started its probe into the blast.

“We have interrogated?8-10 persons from Nehru Nagar area of Roorkee where the blast took place but no significant leads have come up so far. Aided by ballistic experts, the NIA has also begun its investigation to determine the nature of the explosion,” ADG (law and order) Ram Singh Meena said today.

Women battalion for security of female train passengers soon

A special women battalion of the Railway Protection Force will be raised soon for security of female train passengers, Lok Sabha was informed today.

Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu said during Question Hour that CCTV cameras are also being installed in trains to monitor activities of passengers while a special mobile app will be introduced soon by the Railway Ministry to facilitate women passengers to lodge instant complaints of harassments.

President Pranab Mukherjee calls for serious thought on health care system

Former Rajya Sabha MP Amar Singh, who had recently met BJP leaders and praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi, today sought to dismiss speculation that he has joined BJP or received an invite in this regard.

AMU following HC order on library access to UG girls, Parl told

Undergraduate girl students of AMU’s Women’s College have started getting access to the varsity’s central library, Parliament was today told.

“AMU has informed that in compliance with the Allahabad Hig Court ruling… girls of Women’s College can now have access to Maulana Azad Library from 8 A.M. to 11 A.M. every Sunday commencing from December 7,” said HRD Minister Smriti Irani.

In a written reply, she also denied that the Vice Chancellor had given any order that women undergraduate students would not be allowed access to the main library.

SC refuses to implead firms, re-look coal allocation verdict

The Supreme Court today dismissed a batch of pleas filed by various firms including Tata Steel seeking impleadment and re-look of its earlier verdict by which allocations of 214 out of 218 coal blocks were quashed.

“We are not going into it. Whether your case was considered by the screening committee or not is not an issue. We have already held that the entire process was flawed and illegal,” a three judge-bench headed by Justice Madan B Lokur said.

First Test at Brisbane postponed; could be cancelled

India to give Rs 10 crore for Pancheshwar project in Nepal

The Centre has agreed to contribute Rs. 10 crore for the preliminary works of Pancheshwar Development Authority (PDA) involving India and Nepal.

Replying to a question in Rajya Sabha yesterday, which was released today, Minister of State for Water Resources Sanwar Lal Jat said that it has been agreed to have a corpus fund of Rs. 20 crore with both India and Nepal contributing Rs. 10 crore each for preliminary works of PDA.

Gangster Abu Salem seeks ban on a book on him

Gangster Abu Salem on Tuesday filed an application in the special TADA court seeking a ban on a book written by a former journalist, titled `My name is Abu Salem’.

During the hearing today, when judge G A Sanap asked Salem about the book, he said he had never spoken to anyone.

“The author must have taken details from chargesheets and other evidence,” Salem said.

The judge observed how could such a book be written when the trial was going on.

Salem, an accused in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case, was extradited from Portugal in November 2005.

The clampdown on age-fraud cases by the Table Tennis Federation of India has apparently forced North Bengal Table Tennis Association to call back its entire junior girls team that was to compete at the 76th Junior and Youth National Table Tennis Championships.

Even as a few team members had landed in Alappuzha in advance for the 76th Junior and Youth National Table Tennis Championships that began today, the NBTTA, which had sent online entries before the last date for the championships, withdrew all names without citing any reason.
